I heard a lecture on Ancient Rome recently, and the Professor mentioned that before 67 B.C. the Roman Empire- as mighty as it was- was helpless against two things... terrorism (pirates) and third-rate dictators (Mithridates).

Sound familiar?

Only after Pompey the Great was granted imperium infinitum (infinite power) by the Senate were these problems solved, by brutal means, you can be sure.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yeah, but the difference was that the Roman Republican form of government didn't work worth a damn to run an empire. It was founded to run a city-state. I admit that I'm a bit rusty on my Roman history, but the Republic was dead. Attempts to hang onto it were a joke. Julius Caesar didn't kill it, he just put a dead system in its grave. George W. Bush is no Julius Caesar.
Must dust off my classical history textbooks...........
