I was glad to read your 'self-immolation of the Republicans' comment, Irvine. It's what I devoutly hope myself, and having someone who's opinion I respect say it makes my afternoon.

thank you, that was very kind.

particularly on what has been an awful day (all work stuff).

It's kind of like choosing between two politicians of the same stripes, interestingly enough. If they ended up being the nominees, I think it would turn out to be a very interesting election campaign.

What would likely happen if both were the nominees (what is more likely is that Frist will unleash a nasty push poll and discredit McCain under a pile of Southern-lovin' racism like in 2000) is that McCain would likely win, since he tends to have more bipartisan appeal, while Hillary is still seen a rabid butch lesbian "Lilith" by too many Republicans.

so opinion of my (lack of) choices is somehow void.

why would i vote for someone i do not agree with?

surely you jest.

sitting out accomplishes nothing.

choosing the lesser of two evils is a necessary part of the democratic process, and you might have to choose the person you disagree with less. it's lack of participation that endagers the continuation of democracy.

I would honestly have to vote McCain. I don't belong to either party, I dislike partisan bickering.

I've disagreed with his stance on a number of things, but in my gut I feel he's actually (gasp!) a decent man, a (fairly) honest politician.

Hilary Clinton has always struck me as doing anything it took to remain in office. When it came down to it, I don't think she would really fight for what I wanted. There's also been those unfortunate anti-Semitic remarks...

McCain in the Republican party is like a puppy dog with a shitload of snakes slithering around it. McCain is the ONLY likeable politician in the Republican party. Frankly, most of the time he is so moderate and dare I say likeable, that I'm surprised he hasn't at least become independent or something yet. Does anyone know what specifically keeps him in the Republican party?

Anyway...because of the scars of Dictator Bush and his DAMN administration, I still find it very, very, very, VERY difficult to even thnk about voting Republican. I'd probably end up voting for Hilary.

But truth be told, I really want Obama to run. I think he has the right ideas, and he seems more honest, if you know what I mean, than Hilary is.

i sort of thought it was perpetuation of oligarchy and the lack or real choices.

how do you intend to break the oligarchy and create real choices? is it to sit on your hands in November? or is to work for incremental change the year round, and then make the best choices you can on election day?

while immediate political struggle is a valid effort i can't say that there is a movement that i am currently aware of that i would be able to stomach. i guess the real issue here is that ideologically, if you will, we are coming from very different view points. i am an "extremist." what you would describe as incremental, i call negligible. if a real labor movement were to arise again in this country that fought for working class solidarity and advancement then i would vote for their candidate. the socialist workers party, to my knowledge, is a joke. they run people who are not even constitutionally eligible to be president of this country. a lot of good my vote does there. and the cp-usa has become a lapdog of the democractic party. they endorsed kerry. i voted across the working family party's ticket in the past election. unfortunately they were also endorsing kerry. if i vote in 2008 it will be incredibly hard for me to put an x in anyone's box for president. it'll depend largely on the third party candidates. most certainly i don't think i'll be voting democrat again.

So, if the race in 2008 shapes up to be McCain VS. Clinton, who would you vote for?

I LOVE your drive to keep this thread on topic! Much appreciated.

If July 19, 2005 was November 6, 2008 (date?), with the knowledge I have of both candidates listed in this poll, I would vote for McCain.

But like the barlowdog and others say...it is way too early.

if you don't vote, you can't complain.

Choosing not to vote is a legitimate form of political expression.

Besides, I think the right to complain is somewhere in the Constitution.

I didn't hear anything about that....please elaborate?

I'll have to come through Google and see if I can find the exact speech and the person she was referring too. She referred to someone, who I believe had worked for the Clinton White House, as "a Jew bastard." At a public event no less. I can't remember if she elaborated further--it's pretty tame as comments go, but still.

I remember reading all about it on Slate, it was a minor fracas.

I agree with you.

I'm not registered with either party, but 90% of the time I vote Democrat. I've never voted for a Republican presidential candidate, but between these two it would go to McCain.

Unfortunately, the right wing of the Republican party will never let it happen. And if they do, it will be because McCain recoils somehow and goes against what he has stood for his entire political career, which would make me probably change my mind.

But in a perfect world, McCain.

I'm not a US citizen, so not going to register a 'vote' here, but all those who like McCain because he's moderate and nothing like the other Republicans - if he did manage to get through and be the candidate, do you think he'd even have a chance of being the change making moderate president you would to see him be, or do you think he'd just have his hands tied by the conservative side of his own party?

always liked John McCain until he backed Bush after all that had happened in 2000, lost some respect for the man. Still generally like him, but he doesnt have the backbone I thought.

Dont like Hillary either, at all. But I did like Bill, so by default I'd go with Hillary, although I am not convinced of that yet. For the purposes of this little poll, I'd choose her.

I wouldnt be ultra-shocked to see Giuliani vs Kerry.

I happen to think Kerry would run a much better race than he did in 04, but would the party back him?? They will if the people do.
He is probably damaged goods like Gore. Loser candidates have occasionally won later, including Nixon, Bush Sr among others.

Rudy is a sentimental nod, but would the conservatives back him?
I'd think not, but the prospect of carrying New York might be too hard to pass for the big money backers.

I'd vote for Hilary.

I would honestly love to see a woman in charge.

Alright. For the purposes of this polling, I made up my mind to vote for a third party. Count 1 vote for Peter Griffin.

I don't want McCain as president, but come on.

McCain's naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. He spent years as aPrisoner of War in the Vietnam War.

I'd say the man has plenty of backbone.

And as far as his support of Dubya in 2000, the man put the success of his party above his own ahead of his won feelings. I think that took a lot more backbone than lashing out in anger would.
