In a Little While
Zooropa
Gone
Running to Stand Still
Electric Co.
etc.etc.

U2 seem to bottle it after the 1st single from an album..I hope they take a few more risks next time and not go with the 'safe' songs (WIld Horses, God's Country, LNOE etc)..

Well, since some of ya'll cheated and did a top 10 list rather than a top 5 list I'm going to expand my list.

1. Bad
2. Running To Stand Still
3. Tomorrow
4. Drowning Man
5. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
6. God Part II
7. Gone
8. Zooropa
9. Heartland
10. In A Little While

Out of this list I think In A Little While would have been the most succesful single. I believe Gone and Ultraviolet would have done well too. According to conventional wisdom, Bad is simply too long to be a single, but I still think it could have been a hit, especially after Live Aid like previous posters have said. I remember it being played on the radio back in the '80s even though it wasn't an official single.

red hill mining town
heartland
a sort of homecoming
drowning man
like a song

- bad from wide awake in america was released as a quasi-radio single after the sucess of live aid
- god part II was a single
- in gods country was a single
- one tree hill was a single

From u2wanderer.org;

"Lemon was the second single released from Zooropa. It followed the trend of not being a worldwide release, nor being released in typical formats, that started with the Numb single. A commercial version of this single was not released in Europe. Instead the single only had limited release in the United States, Australia and Japan. Europe and other regions had promotional singles released. The single did chart at number 6 in Australia where the more traditional formats were released.

The Japanese release was identical to the Australian release with an added insert."

Thanks! :)

one thing...

Bad shouldn't count, because is equal or more over-played as a single

I've actually never heard it on the radio ... I'm told it was played quite a bit, but that's just going by what people have said. Never once heard it myself.

interesting question,

my first was a single, although I do not officialy consider it one, because I have never heard it on the radio and well the video sucked and in my opinion it is one of the most underated songs of all time:
1) If God Will Send His Angels
2) KITE (I could write a book about this song!)
3) North and South of the River ( this song is so powerful, when it came out it hypnotized me so that I actually fell in love with a girl I despised)
4) UltraViolet ( god, if I ever find the woman I fantasize about when I hear this song. . . . )
5) Playboy mansion ( if you don't have hope, just jump off a building or inject enough heroin to end it all)
