Alright, you asked for it...

Bizaro-elevated_u2_fan sayz:

Rank the closing tracks on each album this time from worst to best (eleventh to first)... And of course this is ranking them on their ability to close the album not on their quality.

Oh and for ATYCLB and HTDAAB I have removed Ground Beneath Her Feet and Fast Cars from the running, because I can.

I found this one more difficult than the best opening tracks but here goes:

11. Yahweh
10. Is That All?
09. Grace
08. Shadows And Tall Trees
07. MLK
06. Mothers Of The Disappeared
05. Love Is Blindness
04. All I Want Is You
03. 40
02. Wake Up Dead Man
01. The Wanderer

11. Is That All
10. Shadows and Tall Trees
09. Wake Up Dead Man

Those are the worse b/c I don't really care for any of those songs. This is where it gets REALLY hard...

08. Grace
07. 40
06. Love Is Blindness
05. MLK
04. The Wanderer
03. Yahweh
02. Mothers of the Disappeared
01. All I Want Is You

11. Is that all?
10. Grace
9. Shadows and tall trees
8. Wake up dead man

7. All I want is you
6. MLK
5. Yahweh
4. Mothers of the dissappeared

3. The wanderer
2. 40
1. Love is blindness

11. Is That All?
10. '40' (I'm sorry but the way the album ends look strange with the bad studio version of this song)
09. The Wanderer
08. Shadows And Tall Trees
07. MLK
04. Grace
04. Love Is Blindness
04. Yahweh
03. Mothers Of The Disapperared
02. All I Want Is You
01. Wake Up Dead Man

11. Yahweh
10. MLK
9. Is That All?
8. 40
7. Wake Up Dead Man
6. The Wanderer
5. Love is Blindness
4. Grace
3. Mothers of the Disappeared
2. Shadows and Tall Trees
1. All I Want is You

Yes, Shadows and Talls Trees is my second favorite. I think it's just the perfect closing to their debut effort, their most innocent record for the most part.

11. is that all?
10. mlk
9. shadows and tall trees
8. yahweh
7. 40
6. the wanderer
5. wake up dead man
4. mothers of the disappeared
3. grace
2. all i want is you
1. love is blindness

thats the correct list, bitches!!!111!!1!!!1!!1 :rockon:

11) Is That All?
10) Mother of the Disappeared
9) Shadows And Tall Trees
8) MLK
7) Wake Up Dead Man
6) The Wandere
5) All I Want Is You
4) Yahweh
3) Grace
2) 40
1) Love Is Blindness

11. The Wanderer - Only thing I dislike more than Johnny Cash's voice are the alarms at the end.
10. Is That All - okay ender or an okay album.
9. Mothers Of The Disappeared - This is a great B side or one off for a charity album. But it doesn't really fit the album or close it all that well.
8. MLK - Good, but one-dimensional and short. Does it's job though.
7. Wake Up Dead Man - A longer version of MLK
6. Grace - good ender, a little too light for my taste.
5. Shadows & Tall Trees - Dunno why, always liked this song
4. Love Is Blindness - great ender that gently lands the listener at the bottom of the dark pit he's been falling toward since tripping over the edge of the abyss with Zoo Station.
3. "40" - Fantastic song, fantastic sentiment; doesn't really fit the martial nature of the album. Should've closed October.
2. Yahweh - Love the sweeping & joyous nature of this song; and easily hold some of Bono's best lyrics in years. It's too bad it is so prejudiced against; it deserves wider recognition.
1. All I Want Is You - It must be quite the closer when it saves the entire double album.

I never did rank the openers, so just for the hell of it:

11. Helter Skelter - Meh; should've opened with Desire.
10. A Sort Of Homecoming - Doesn't really fit the album in general and the mix is terrible.
9. Discotheque - Mofo better
8. Vertigo - Love & Peace Or Else would have been much better
7 Beautiful Day - The album is without a real tone setting opener
6 Gloria - Would've opened with October.
5 I Will Follow - Would've opened with The Ocean or Out Of Control
4. Sunday Bloody Sunday - Good one, just not great; which is exactly how I feel about the song in general.
3. Zooropa - Excellent opener, set the mood and tone and a great song to boot
2. Streets - An iconic opener for an iconic album
1. Zoo Station - Streets is the better song, but Zoo Station does everything Zooropa does for it's album, but is a much better song on top of it.

This is exactly why I like this song, when I first heard it (at the time I was a casual U2 fan) I was like WTF?

I love the fact that it's a total mind-fuck, like a brick wall you run into at the end of that album. Brilliant, to this day I love playing the CD in my car for people and the look on their faces when the last track plays is priceless.

11. Is That All?
10. Grace
09. Shadows And Tall Trees
08. Yahweh
07. 40 (the album version sucks - if it was a live version, it would be #1)
06. Wake Up Dead Man
05. The Wanderer
04. Love Is Blindness
03. Mothers Of The Disappeared
02. MLK
01. All I Want Is You

generally the closers are great so this is hard

11. Wake Up Dead Man
10. The Wanderer (if not for Cash this would have been higher)
09. Grace
08. Love Is Blindness
07. All I Want Is You
06. MLK
05. Is That All?
04. Yahweh
03. Shadows And Tall Trees
02. Mothers Of The Disappeared
01. 40 (studio version is perfect)

11. Is That All?
10. 40
9. The Wanderer
8. Shadows and Tall Trees
7. Yahweh
6. Mothers Of The Disappeared
5. All I Want Is You
4. Wake Up Dead Man
3. MLK
2. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
1. Love Is Blindness

Thats how i feel today. Might be totally different tomorrow.

I bet you like scraping your nails against a chalk board too just to get a reaction.

Seriously though, the alarms to me are just an early 90's cheese detector going off.

7. Wake Up Dead Man - A longer version of MLK

WTF?

11. Is That All?
10. Grace
9. The Wanderer
8. Love Is Blindness
7. MLK
6. Mothers Of The Disappeared
5. Yahweh
4. Shadows And Tall Trees
3. "40"
2. All I Want Is You
1. Wake Up Dead Man

11. Grace (by far one of the worst u2 songs ever, in my opinion)
10. Is That All? (good album with some unfinished tunes, like this)
9. Shadows And Tall Trees (strong album with a rather weak end)
8. The Wanderer (wish, Bono could have performed it...)

Now, let's stop the nonsense of classification for the next tunes:

Yahweh (a classic closer for a classic album - wow!)
Wake Up Dead Man (good album with a great closer)
Love Is Blindness (still inside of me THE '91 album&ZOO TV closer)
All I Want Is You (simply irresistible)
Mothers Of The Disappeared (perfect lyrics & melody)
MLK (a sketch of music, brilliant)
'40' (beautiful, still beautiful track - and THE closer in general)

...these 7 songs are ALL masterpieces!

11. Mothers of the Disappeared ... I don't think i've ever listened to this song....wooow....well im off to listen
10. Is That All?
9. Grace
8. MLK
7. Yahweh
6. 40 (Nothing compared to itself Live)
5. Wake up Deadman
4. Shadows and Tall Trees
3. All I Want Is You
2. The Wanderer (I like Johnny's voice)
1. Love is Blindness

WUDM is a longer version of MLK? Have you read the lyrics?!

11. Is That All?
10. MLK
9. The Wanderer
8. Grace
7. 40 (only because it's a weak effort here)
6. Shadows and Tall Trees
5. Yahweh
4. Wake Up Dead Man
3. Love Is Blindness
2. Mothers of the Disappeared
1. All I Want Is You

I have to say, U2 generally does a good job picking its closers.

I think all of U2's closing tracks are excellent except for #11, which I still think is decent. This was a really hard ranking to do.

11. Yahweh: just doesn't strike me as a great closer.
10. Is That All?: Scarlet would have been better.
9. Shadows And Tall Trees
8. MLK
7. Grace
6. 40
5. Wake Up Dead Man
4. The Wanderer
3. Mothers Of The Disappeared
2. Love Is Blindness
1. All I Want Is You

11. Is That All? (not a bad song, though the title is appropriate... it's just not very closer-ish)
10. Shadows and Tall Trees
9. Mothers of the Disappeared
8. Grace
7. Yahweh
6. MLK
5. The Wanderer
4. 40
3. All I Want is You
2. Wake Up Dead Man
1. Love is Blindness

11. Grace
10. All I Want Is You
9. Shadows And Tall Trees
8. The Wanderer
7. 40
6. Mothers Of The Disappeared
5. Love Is Blindness
4. MLK
3. Wake Up Dead Man
2. Yahweh
1. Is That All?

They all pretty much do the job pretty well, but Is That All? does it the best.....gawd, that's an amazing song!

11. Shadows and Tall Trees
10. Is That All?
9. Mothers of the Disappeared
8. Grace
7. The Wanderer
6. Yahweh
5. MLK
4. Wake Up Dead Man
3. 40
2. Love is Blindness
1. All I Want Is You

11. Is That All? I agree with Axver, should have been Scarlet. In fact I re-burned it this way when I listen to it (on rare occasions).

10. Shadows And Tall Trees, weakest song on this album. The Ocean would have been a better closer.

9. The Wanderer, first I dont think its a good closer, 2nd while I like Johnny Cash I would rather have Bono singing it. Plus this is one of my least favorite albums.

8. Wake Up Dead Man, the song just doesnt do anything for me. It sounds like a closer though.

7. Love Is Blindness, its ok, I'm sure I'm the minority on this one but I like So Cruel better.

6. Yahweh, its alright, one my least favorite songs on the album though.

5. Grace, I actually like this one alot. Think it could have used a little more work though in the studio.

4. MLK, very good song. Simple, to the point, good closer to a good album.

3. 40, the classic closer. I dont think it deserves as much hype as it gets. But its a good song.

2. Mothers Of The Disappeared, great closer to my favorite album.

1. All I Want Is You, not only a great song, but it is an almost perfect closer with the violins at the end.

11. yahweh
10. grace
9. is that all?
8. the wanderer
7. love is blindness
6. mlk
5. 40
4. shadows and tall trees
3. wake up dead man
2. mothers of the disappeared
1. all i want is you

What's with all the Cash hate???

I have to run, so...

11. Yahweh. This is the sound of U2 bottoming out.

1. Love is Blindness. My favourite of the closer songs just as a song, plus such a stunning and perfect closer to Achtung. A great conclusion in a narrative sense to the rest of the album.

Never any love for Is That All?, not even as a closer.

Am I the only one who appreciates it...

Scarlet is shite when compared with Is That All?
