"I went out walking
Through streets paved with gold"

is the first line of the wanderer. The first line of 'London' by william blake is

"I wander thro' each charter'd street,"

So here we both narrators walking down a London street (London's streets are supposed to be paved with gold because it is so rich).

"Lifted some stones
Saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul "

"And mark in every face i meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe"

Same thing again in each of the poems.

"And the hapless Soldier's sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls."

Refers to war in 'London' by Blake. "Under an atomic sky" refers to war from U2

"I went out there
In search of experience "

from u2. Could this be a reference to Blakes 'Songs of Experience'. from which London is taken from? Blakes version of experience is a strong theme in both 'The Wanderer' and 'London'

"Where men can't walk
Or freely talk "

"In every voice, in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear. "

ban refers to laws passed restricting freedom, mind forg'd manacles means people are trapped by the way we think. Again, some similar ideas here.

There are also references to crying in both poems.

Finally, the annoying beeping at the end of 'The Wanderer' is in imitation of a record i think? I think it means the record needs to be turned over. ANyway its in imitation of an old form of music. Could it be a hint towards Blakes poetry (which is very old)?

'Wild Honey' is also very similar to Blakes work, 'The Songs of Experience'.

Do you guys think im on to something here?

You could probably find lyrics slightly similar to just about any song's lyrics really, if you looked hard enough or found enough songwriters' work.

well ive been thinking about this...

the beauty of art is that you can see in it whatever you like. Maybe that is why 'One' is so popular... people think its about u2, aids, gays, berlin... so everyone relates to it.

In my opinion U2 are obviously fans of blake, what with this, wild honey and beautiful ghost, but if you guys think different then thats good as well:)

Not sure about that... one thing I do know is that the lyrics to the Verve's History were very closely related to Blake's London... just thought I'd mention it, as it's connected.

William Blake - London

I wander thro' each charter'd street,
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow,
And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,
In every Infant's cry of fear,
In every voice, in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear.

How the Chimney-sweeper's cry
Every black'ning Church appalls;
And the hapless Soldier's sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls.

But most thro' midnight streets I hear
How the youthful Harlot's curse
Blasts the new born Infant's tear,
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.

The Verve - History

I wandered lonely streets
Behind where the old Thames does flow,
And in every face I meet
Reminds me of what I have run from.

In every man, in every hand,
In every kiss you understand
That living is for other men.
I hope you do understand:

I've gotta tell you my tale
Of how I loved and how I failed.
I hope you understand,
These feelings should not be in the man.

In every child, in every eye,
In every sky above my head
I hope that I know,
So come with me in bed

Because it's you and me, we're history,
There ain't nothing left to say
When I will get you alone...

Maybe we could find a room
Where we could see what we should do.
Maybe you know it's true -
Living with me is like keeping a fool.

In every man, in every hand,
In every kiss you understand
That living is for other men.
I hope you know that I am me,
So come on -

I'm thinking about history
And I'm living for history
And I think you know about me cos I am.

And one and one is two
But three is company
When you're thinking about the things you do
When you're thinking about the things
we knew

I wanna tell you my tale
How I fell in love and jumped out on my bail.
Do you understand?
There's more in a smile than in a hand.

In every sky, in every kiss
There's one thing that you might have missed,
And why am I going to
A place that now belongs to you?

But you are weak and so am I -
Let's pick it up, let's even try
To live today, so why not smile?
Don't dream away your life

Cos it is mine,
It is mine.
Is that a crime?
Is that a crime?

This life is mine,
But the bed ain't made -
It's still full of hope;
I've got a skin full of dope.

That's that - back to U2!
