I know they are to tour stadiums in Europe, but I really think they'll gonna need a new album for it. I don't think they'll promote ATYCLB anymore. The album has done all that it can for U2. I'm thinking something new will come out in June or July. If I'm correct I think Zooropa came out in July in '93. Until the summer though, I guess they'll head home and finish up the new album? Thats my guess.

I sure hope so, I'm praying they have a kick-ass album out in time for the summer, but don't hold your breath, it wouldnt surprise me to see the recording process drag on into 2003 (they dont have a lot of time left to finish an album before they start touring again)

True, but thats what made Zoorpa so great. It was made in the late night in 3 months. Also, I'm sure they have songs laying around from the ATYCLB sessions. Bono made the last album sound like it was gonna be a heavy rock n roll album. To me it doesn't make sense touring stadiums with the same album.

they'll probably go back home, relax with the families, celebrate adam's and bono's birthdays, have a good time, and probably spend a good amount of time in the studio recording. bono will probably rest up his voice for the summer european, although his voice sounded fucking awesome today at the grammy's. i'm kinda sad though cause they're going back home now and we probably won't here much from them for a while. well, it was fun while it lasted....god, i reallllllly need some new stuff sooon!!!!!

U2 are rumoured to be doing two songs at the Meteor Music Awards next Monday - hope so as I have standing tickets!

Think they've already recorded the album as they were in the studio for a few months so keeping my fingers crossed they'll release it during the tour

I think it's very possible it could be another Zooropa. Combined with Bulldozer, the song he wrote for his daughters, Electrical Storm, that other song which escapes me at the moment, etc. -- only a few more new songs would be needed, and you KNOW they don't mention all the new songs they work on.

I think it would be marvellous to have my first experience of having to wait for the new album and such, and actually HAVE a new album to enjoy, BUT there might be backlash, as other threads have discussed to no end. I don't know if they lay low until June or July if they won't have backlash or not. I certainly hope so.

I'm hoping a new album will be out this year. Nothing else seems to justify touring Europe this summer. Personally, I'm beginning to be overexposed to them in the mass media. At least as ATYCLB is concerned. Some fresh material would be nice.

first they'll take manhattan.

then they'll take berlinnnnn!

The liquid engineers left the pool heater on too long, and at night, chlorine vapors rose above the plant life of the planet, and I imagined my flesh, being inside the pool, being warm, and protected, feeling gravity, but able to mock it as I floated. Would you float with me now, if I asked you, would you jump in the pool and not even bother to strip? Could I strip you down, remove your clothing and we would fall inside the water together?

It scares me.

I know they released Zooropa during the Zoo TV tour, which was great. It was a suprise, & low key with little hype. But I think the times are different now. U2 have really worked hard to get ATYCLB where it is, and the run is not over yet. It's March now & the album will probably climb into the top 20, if not top 10 in the next 2 weeks. I'm really happpy U2 is on top again, but the chances of overexposure are very real. I've never seen them promote themselves so much. I don't think they would just slip a low key album like Zooropa out again, or at least right now. If they did release a new album, I think they would really want to plug the hell out of it & do a different tour behind it. I think they should chill a bit, & I think they will. If they release anything this year, (which I doubt) it won't be until Xmastime, and probably a Best of. Just my opinion...

I used to cheer for an album this year, but with all the Grammy wins for ATYCLB, i think this is the way to go:

wait till ATYCLB hype part 2 runs out, maybe release one more single, and the rumored new Best of in November, tour in Summer (after all, it's still Elevation tour, so maybe new songs won't be played anyway)

then come back in 2003 with the new album. No sense in messing with ATYCLB's success with the next album just now.

I agree. I wrote this before in another post, but I think a 90's best of might be key at Xmas this year to introduce new fans to that decade, and reintroduce older fans who missed out on Zooropa & especially POP. Maybe recut/remix a POP song like Gone, DYFL, or Mofo in a ATYCLB friendlier version...

Noooo!!! Those songs are magnificent just as they are now.

This thread is too hilarious for words. After near endless bitching from Europeans that U2 was overplaying the U.S. to the detriment of Europe we now have Europeans womdering how U2 can "justify" playing additional shows on their side of the Atlantic. Ha, ha, ha. You guys sure now how to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I love all of those versions. I was just thinking like the "Sweetest Thing" remake, for a single, to introduce to people who don't know them yet. Maybe "Gone"... I think that works better live, plus they still play it.

inside sources have informed me they will be doing the soundtrack to an upcoming porn...who's starring in it remains undisclosed, however..

Maybe I'm confused, but I thought it was Adam who liked it?

That's true, but I don't think an album track (as opposed to a b-side, which Sweetest Thing was) should be remixed and rereleased. Seems to me like milking the cash cow while you can, as opposed to offering somewhat new material -- or at least completely new material to almost all of the general public.

Ok....this a topic that I've been interested in for a while, but never got around to giving my opinion on, so this may take a while
biggrin.gif
.

1. Now that ATYCLB has been shot back to the top with the grammy wins, plus the re-release of WALK ON....i doubt that this album will be dying down too quickly.

2. I think that after WALK ON has died down, they should release 2 MORE, YES 2 MORE singles from ATYCLB. Namely KITE and IN A LITTLE WHILE.
- Reasons are: These two songs have great potential to rock the music market, and KITE has great potential to win U2 yet EVEN MORE awards. Also, both Paul McGuiness and Edge said that they believe this album could spawn 6 singles......and why not?

3. The risk of over-exposure as mentioned by many of you above is too great....I don't want U2 to be burnt because they released an album too close to the other.....plus that would just knock them off the top position in which they are right now.

4. Many people think/want U2 to release teh Best of the 90s plus ATYCLB.....My Opinion:
TOO CLOSE! They should wait at least until they have another album out before they release the Best Of. It should have room from other albums to at least sell a few million copies. You can't overload the market with U2, otherwise it will snap back on you.......

5. If they do release a BEST OF with a re-vamped version of a B-Side.....it should be either SLOW DANCING (Bono version) or for an ALBUM song, it should be GONE.

Anyway....there's so much more to be said...with no time.
Bless ya!

What are you talking about?

U2 has never said they'll be promoting any new material on this Summer tour - it's additional Elevation shows.
What is there to justify?

[This message has been edited by U2girl (edited 03-03-2002).]

There's NOTHING to justify U2Girl. That's my point. U2 are going to tour Europe and a lot of Europeans on Interference complained last year that U2 weren't playing enough shows in Europe. Now U2 have decided to play extra gigs in Europe and Interferencers in this thread are complaining. I just thought it was pretty ironic.

I only saw two people comment that "new songs would justify the tour in stadiums". (which makes no sense at all - see the previous replies in this thread, plus U2's music is known for being great when played in stadiums)
Se7en and Zoopop.
(i don't know about Se7en, but Zoopop is from Texas. since Se7en talks about mass media overexposure of U2, i'm guessing he/she is American too.)

So, where do you see Europeans complaining?
Also, i don't see why Americans are saying U2 "needs" a new album to tour?

I had to gloat a little...Congrats to U2!

Anyone know if Walk On had a spike in airplay?

Regarding which song on a 90's best of they should re-do. Who says they will even do that? Just because they did on the first one is not a precedent for that.

Personally, I would like to see the version of the Wanderer with Bono on vocals released. Maybe they could revamp it also. I love the lyrics to the song but Johnny Cash on vocals just doesnt work for me.

Also, I think the only reason U2 is not releasing an album this year is because they dont feel they will have it ready in time and they want to make sure that the next studio f/u album to ATYCLB is a strong one.

I would look for a Best Of in stores right before Christmas if and a new studio album summer/fall (maybe even spring) of 2003 with a N. American tour to follow it in late summer/early fall 2003. That is my "guess".

[This message has been edited by Blue Room (edited 03-06-2002).]

I agree that a Best of this year seems likely followed by a new album in the spring/summer time.

To further this point, I was in montreal this weekend. While I was at a restaurant I got talking to the waitress who was a friend of mine. She told me that Larry and Bono have both been in on several occasions and that she has actually become friends with Larry.

She then went on to tell me that he calls her and shoots the shit. Aparently, he told her that they are finishing the next best of and aiming to have it out let this year.

Take from this what you will. I am not even sure I believe it. That being said it does seem to be somewhat in line with other rumors. Who knows. Just gives us something more to chat about.

Peace.

Um, no... the people who don't like those songs never will, and they 'missed' them for a reason- they avoided them because they didn't like them. I couldn't even imagine trying to make a more palatable MOFO LMAO! Leave it behind, drop it. A "Greatest Hits" will come, but with the songs as they were on the album, like all compilations.

I do hope they will not wait too long to record, so they can captialize in the power of the Elevation tour as Bono said. Okay, I'm greedy and jealous and I want more tour dates- with the GA system, just like Elevation, and if I don't get it now I'm going to have a tantrum!

I don't know about "people who don't like those songs never will." I'm sure a lot of people never even heard much, if not all of the POP stuff, being scared away by Discotheque & the "techno" tag it was given in the press. Plus, with a lot of U2 stuff (especially POP), it's kind of hard to get into it on the 1st listen. Mofo was one of my least favorite songs on the album when I first got it, now it's among my favorites. I can see your point by making a more palatable Mofo, that would be kind of tough...I was really thinking about making one of the POP tracks more accessable like U2 tried to do when they put them out as singles, or strip them down a bit like they are live...Gone for example...
