After 1 year, 3 months and 3 weeks of continuous presence in the UK top 100, ATYCLB is out of the UK charts.

It's a good time to make a small review of its full run in the UK album charts.

1-4-10-20-25-26-28-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56-47-37-30-23
22-15-16-23-34-42-53-66-83-76
74-60-50-57-69-83-71-54-61-60
64-56-60-76-95-98-OUT

It's obvious that the album is getting old, even though it seems to me like yesterday the day it was released

Not having any reason for the album to rise before the Grammies, it will probably remain out of the top 100 until then. If U2 do well in the grammies, or if we see a new single, there is a chance it might return.

For now, all our attention goes to the Billboard charts as we are all excited to find out what the actual SuperBowl effect was.

It's been long out of the charts. With strong sales of greek music albums, foreign albums have a hard time going to the top and staying around the charts for a long time. ATYCLB did not reach the top (if I'm not mistaken) and did not float around the charts for too long. But I wouldn't be able to support this with facts because greek charts are not available online and I don't really buy the paper where they're published.

I think that in many small european countries charts are not as advanced and representative as in the US or the UK. And you must also take into consideration the different language/culture problem. We actually have different radio stations that play greek music and different ones that play english music. And different people listen to them. And we also have greek music clubs and foreign music clubs. We used to have different charts for greek albums and foreign albums. We're talking about two different worlds here, with greek music enthusiasts currently being the majority...

Did you see U2s first and only show ever in Greece on the POPMART tour? I heard 50,000 people were at the show.

Yes, of course I was there!

It was a pretty good show, and I'm glad I was there. I really don't know if U2 have ever performed at a place like that because the show took place in the harbour yard, the kind of place right next to the harbour where shipments are stored, kind of like the port depot. It was a pretty cool, industrial-like environment for a show!

And yes, there were 55.000 people in the show officially, and I can tell you there were many more inside using other ways! You'd freak out to find out the ticket price, a mere equivalent of $US 10. That's because in 1997 Thessaloniki, where the concert took place, was the cultural capital of Europe and the U2 concert was actually funded by the state thus allowing for a CHEAP ticket price! We're talking about a cool deal watching U2 for $10!

That concert was the music event of the year in this country. Tickets were gone a LONG time before the concert. Fan queues for the tickets were actually in the evening news on every channel, long before the concert! And of course the media was there for the concert as well.

Sad is the fact that this concert was probably the only Popmart concert that was not recorded. Not a single bootleg appeared or even instances of the show, except on soem brief TV footage. There is a big chance that this concert is permanently lost in time, although there is probably some fan out there who recorded it and but never gave it away.

The concert was actually very close to be cancelled, for two different reasons. One is that Bono's voice was really not in a good condition. Bono was actually given quite a number of injections by greek doctors in order to be able to perform (he thanked them during the concert). The other reason which brought the concert close to a cancellation was a strike by customs brokers in the Greek-Yugoslav borders which did not allow the trucks carrying the stage equipment enter Greece. (The previous show was the one in Sarajevo). This problem was solved due to a government intervention which convinced the customs brokers to allow the U2 trucks in as an exception! The trucks made it to Thessaloniki just on time and the stage was set up just the last moment. That was so close...

Sorry for talking so much, but you woke up some really really beautiful memories inside me... God bless you!

Hey its great to here the story and to know that people in Greece love U2. It looks like the Summer tour of Europe is a sure thing, so maybe just maybe, you and everyone in Greece can know what it is like to be "Elevated"! GO ELEVATION TOUR 2002! Although, I hope this does not delay the release of the next album.

WOW!! is all that I can say. Usually Hits gets our hopes up and Billboard dashes them. But Billboard ended up even better this week! I am sure they will have the greatest gainer designation this week.

Looking at Amazon.com and cdnow.com, it looks like U2 will hold somewhat steady for this coming week, maybe just a small drop.

They are holding in the top ten at Amazon and at cdnow, they finally reached the top ten this week. They were at number 46 two weeks ago. They are sliding slightly now though, so I would expect a slight decline next week.

Congrats U2!!

Here is the list of countries that ATYCLB charts in in week 67 around the world:

United States #25
Denmark #81
Netherlands #58
Italy #44
France #130
Switzerland #94
Canada #27
Total Global sales this week are estimated at 63,717. ATYCLB Worldwide total now stands at 11,095,315! We know the Super Bowl effect here in the USA, but we may have to wait a week or two to see if there is an effect in other countries. The broadcast live would have been on in Europe when most people were asleep. Then again, there may have been rebroadcast. In any event, will know in a couple of weeks if there was a Super Bowl effect outside the USA like there has been inside the USA for this weeks chart.

WOW! GREAT SUTFF IN THE US! I LOVE YOU GUYS!

I don't mean to sound full of myself, but take a look at this

"Well....in my humble, and most likely incorrect opinion...I'd say sales of 46,700 and a chart placing between 18 and 28....
Hmmmm........I love these type of guessing games!

Not bad for an un-educated U2 fan from Australia! I was only 259 copies off!

Anyway, My favourite movie is sweeping the Academy Awards, my favourite band will hopefully sweep the Grammy awards, so right now.....i'm HAPPY!

Hello,

Amazingly, Sting2 got the numbers before I saw them, but anyway. Here are the results of the Dutch jury (Numbers courtesy of Mega Top 100, http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/ ).
As said, ATYCLB drops 2 spots to #58 in their 66th chart week. I don't think there is/nor will be any Superbowl effect. The game was broadcasted in the middle of the night and American Football isn't that popular here. I also think there won't be much of a Grammy effect in the next couple of weeks and there is no single to promote the album even further (Walk On is out the charts and I haven't heard anything about a fifth single). So, expect the coming weeks will be slow for U2.
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38-65-60-66-69-80-81-65-57-61
44-41-44-41-56-58
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

The Best Of 1980-1990 drops 9 spots to #74 in their 112th week on the chart. The album is slowly sliding down, but I don't fear that it will go away. The album has re-entered the chart numerous times (at least 3) so I think it is safe to say that it will continue to sell respectable numbers.
The Best Of 1980-1990's (4th?) chart run is:
86-46-37-45-62-57-61-56-63-45
47-64-63-65-74

The #1 album in the Netherlands is the CD with the (classical) music as played during the royal marriage on 2-2-2. And, to illustrate a point made in the discussion of The Best Of..., a personal favourite of mine, Buena Vista Social Club, re-enters the chart at #61 in their 214th chart week.

As I said last week, Walk On has dropped out of the chart. The single didn't do that spectacular, even though it was a top 10 hit for U2. I think they now have 21 top 10 hits in the Netherlands (out of 32 charting singles). Quite impressive.
Here is the chart run of Walk On:
31-8-10-28-32-41-49-58-75-77-out

The #1 single is Shakira with Whenever Wherever. This is her debut here in the Netherlands (she never scored with her Spanish albums). Her album also rises to #5 this week.

C ya!

Hello,

The Billboard/SoundScan numbers are in and ATYCLB did a really good job. But there is more U2 on the charts.

On the Pop Catalog chart The Best Of 1980-1990 jumps 18-2, while being the 'greatest gainer'! Not only that, but The Joshua Tree also re-enters the chart at #14 in its 241st week. So this means not only ATYCLB profited from the Superbowl, but also U2's back catalog.

Little Billboard blurb on increased sales.

A pair of albums received a mighty post-Super Bowl kick thanks to appearances during the big game. U2, who performed during the halftime break, sees "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (Interscope) rocket 66-25 on a 142% sales burst to 46,000 units. Meanwhile, Pepsi spokesperson Britney Spears, whose latest commercial for the soft drink maker premiered during the first quarter of the game, watches "Britney" (Jive) jump 25-17 on the album chart after a 40% bump.

I will have to buy Billboard next week to see if any other U2 albums made it into the Top Pop Catalog chart. The Magazine shows the top 50, unlike the web which only shows the top 20.

Mike63,
Where did you get the figures for Ireland? I'm curious because the site I go to only list the top 30. I'd be curious to know your source.
WORLDWIDE SALES UPDATE FOR ATYCLB! This is from the almighty record company! Interscope with its parent company Universal. ATYCLB hit the 10 million mark at the end of December 2001. That means my sales estimate at the end of December 2001 of 10,800,000 copies was off by 800,000!
Anyways, without exact info, I think I was close with my estimates. The first 6 weeks of 2002 I have estimated 295,000 in global sales for ATYCLB. Add that to 10 million and you get the nearly official figure of 10,295,000 copies! I always thought I might be off by a half million, but was a little surprised to see it was 800,000 copies.

Love the American charts!
biggrin.gif

STING:

About the worldwide info on the sales of ATYCLB, I'm a bit hesistant in accepting the figures given out by Interscope. I know....they get ALL the info, but really I think that if you increase the figure 10,295,000 by 250,000 to give 10,545,000...I'd say you're closer to the mark. I think STING you're closer to the exact sales of ATYLCB than you think you are

Melissa, at long last, sent me more detailed SoundScan data. Here are some additional U.S. sales numbers for this past week.

"The Best Of" was #2 on the Billboard Pop Catalog charts. At that position, it sold 13,678 copies. If the album could rank on the Top 200 charts, these sales would put it at #102. Last week, the album was ranked at #18 with sales of 5,395 copies. Creed's "Human Clay" was easily #1 with sales of over 20,000 copies for the past two weeks.

"The Joshua Tree" was #14 on the Catalog charts selling 6,900 copies. The week before it was ranked #128 and sold 2,832 copies. However, don't let that low rank fool you - the week before that, JT was #62. It appears JT bounces around a lot on that chart.

Something interesting is that "The Best Of" appears to be broken up - into what I think is the single CD and then the double CD. The double CD appears to be called the Lmt. Ed. (Limited Edition). This Lmt. Ed. version of "The Best Of" ranked at #35 with sales of 5,181 copies. The week before it was #157 with sales of 2,549 copies sold (it was #127 the week before that).

"Achtung Baby" also just snuck into the Pop Catalog charts. It was #200 with 2,514 copies sold this week. Last week, it was unranked as it sold 1,608 copies. This makes me wonder - if U2 had chosen to sing "One" instead of "Streets..." would AB have shot up the charts instead of JT?

On the internet charts, ATYCLB shoots up from #22 to #11, but sales increased only from 511 copies to 739 copies. Therefore, the internet is not a big source of revenue (which surprises me a little as I thought the internet would account for more sales - especially for an album that has been out this long).

The "Elevation Tour" VHS video was #4 for the last two weeks. Last week it sold 4,765 copies and the week before it sold 3,910 copies. The DVD version of this video has been ranked #3 these past two weeks. Last week it sold 4,424 copies and the week before it sold 3,629 copies. Both the VHS and DVD versions are ranked above the Britney Spears video.
biggrin.gif

I wonder though... when a video is certified, are the VHS and DVD sales combined?

That's all for now!

Hello,

Welcome back doc! We missed you over here, especially with your detailed analyses.

You have to take into account that not that many Internet retailers report to Billboard for the Internet Chart. I don't know if the situation has changed, but IIRC, when the charts began a few years ago there was a report stating that, among others, Amazon would not report record sales. As I said, I don't know if that still is the case, and I don't know if CDNow is reporting to Billboard, but the Internet Chart does not represent all or even the major Internet retailers.

Thanks Doc!

I do have one question when I look at the catalog chart. Did Megadeth do something special last week? I mean, the sales of their album Killing Is My Business (#72 on the chart) were almost 4200 copies, compared to only 35 the week before.

Not that I want a copy of that album...

C ya!

Marty

Thanks Doctor Who! Very interesting indeed. I'm also curious by Megadeths numbers. I was hoping the Police's The Classics(Greatest Hits) would be on there but I did not see it. A lot of old Metallica albums continue to sell well, while the most recent two did not make the list.
