Week 39 and Week 40 Chart News...

Here is new Week 40 chart news for Ireland, Australia and the U.K. and Week 39 chart news for Canada and the U.S. Please note the revised U.S. sales estimates.

In Australia, ATYCLB falls from #29 to #38 in its 40th week on the charts. Here is its run so far (each line is 10 weeks):

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29-38

The album is 4x Platinum (280,000 copies sold). The larger drop on the charts this week may correspond to the news that U2 will not stop in Australia on their Elevation Tour.

R.E.M.'s album, "Reveal," spent 11 weeks on the Australian charts. It had the following chart performance: #6-8-11-5-8-10-15-18-26-37-38-out of Top 50. It is certified as Gold (35,000 copies sold). Radiohead?s "Amnesiac" drops out of the Top 50 (from #45) in its 9th week.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run: #10-11-13-16-20-38-37.

The "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack is the #1 album in Australia.

"Elevation" has had the following chart run on the Australian singles chart: #6-22-24-33-36-45.

As shown, "Elevation" debuted at #6 on the Australian charts. "Beautiful Day" debuted at #1 and "Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #3, meaning this is the lowest any single from ATYCLB has debuted on the Australian charts. That said, it should be noted that U2 have now enjoyed three Top 10 hits in Australia from ATYCLB.

"Hanging by a Moment" by Lifehouse is the #1 song in Australia.

No other U2 or R.E.M. song or album appears on the Australian charts.

In Ireland, the first report I read stated that ATYCLB jumped up from #10 to #3 (!!!) in its 40th week. However, the chart I read says that it remained at #10 (and will drop to #13 in Week 41). Therefore, to be consistent, I will use that chart. Here is ATYCLB's run to date:

1-2-3-3-4-6-x-x-7-6
4-3-3-1-3-2-2-2-2-2
4-3-7-10-7-9-15-11-20-22
23-22-23-24-25-22-18-12-10-10

(The "x" represents a week where data was not obtained.)

U2's ATYCLB has not dropped out of the Irish Top 25 since its debut and has spent 28 of its 40 weeks in the Irish Top 10! This rise on the Irish charts is most likely due to U2's tour starting in Europe as well as the release of "Elevation." I imagine that the Slane shows will return ATYCLB close to the top spot.

Radiohead's "Amnesiac" spent only four weeks in the Irish Top 30. Destiny's Child's "Survivor" drops from #1 to #7 in Ireland. "This is the Day" by Christy Moore is the new #1 album.

"Elevation" has the following run on the Irish singles chart: #1-7-12. "Hey Baby" by DJ Otzi is the #1 song in Ireland this week.

In the U.K., ATYCLB rises from #30 to #23 in its 40th week. Here is its chart progress to date:

1-4-10-20-25-26-28(DP)-29-29-23
17-12-12-7-7-8-10-3-6-8
12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60
53-47-47-58-65-56(TP)-47-37-30-23

The album has now been certified as Triple Platinum (900,000 copies sold) in the U.K. The rise on the U.K. charts corresponds with the tour shifting to Europe and "Elevation" receiving airplay on European radio (similar to the Irish charts).

N'Sync may have enjoyed a #1 debut in the U.S. and Canada, but in the U.K., the album debuted at #12 (not even in the Top 10) and fell to #26 this week...not exactly the type of performance for the "World's Biggest Band." Radiohead's "Amnesiac" has had the following chart run in the U.K.: #1-7-14-28-37-39-52-58-58. Madonna?s "Music" is finally starting to fall as it drops from #41 to #55 in its 46th week on the U.K. charts. R.E.M.?s "Reveal" jumps up from #46 to #37 in its 12th week. David Gray's "White Ladder" is the new #1 album in the U.K. as it boots Destiny?s Child's bootyliciousness from the top spot.

"Elevation" has the following run: #3-13-24. This gives U2 three Top 3 hits off of AYTCLB in the U.K., which is more successful than many of U2's albums, including "The Joshua Tree" and "POP."

Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" has had the following chart run: #15-37-55-74-out of the Top 100-78-75-88-93-96-out of the Top 100. R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" has the following chart performance on the U.K. singles chart: #6-15-24-36-45-64-66-73-73-98-98-94-98-out of the Top 100. Atomic Kitten's "Eternal Flame" is the #1 single in the U.K.

The success of "Elevation" helped U2?s "Best Of" sky-rocket back into the Top 50 in the U.K. two weeks ago as it jumped up to #50 from #104. Last week, the "Best Of" album slips to #68. This week, the album charts at #73.

The first 39 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks.

Melissa kindly sent the SoundScan data for Week 39 (which includes sales for Week 38). It appears my estimates were a bit high. Therefore, I have readjusted my sales numbers, giving new estimates for Weeks 32-37 and the rounded SoundScan sales for Weeks 38 and 39. The actual SoundScan sales for Weeks 38 and 39 were 17,316 copies sold and 16,700 copies sold, respectively.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 39 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 39 weeks are: 2,732,000.

Much of the weekly sales data was obtained from actual SoundScan sales charts (kindly provided to me by Melissa, another U2 fan). However, as of late, this information has not always been available. The sales for Weeks 32-37 were estimated based on past sales information and trends. I realize that my totals may be off by a few thousand, but I feel my tally fairly represents actual U.S. sales for ATYCLB.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" fell out of the Top 100 in its 7th week. Depeche Mode's "Exciter" fell out of the Top 100 in its 8th week. Stankonia's "Outkast" fell out of the Top 100 in its 37th week (if you recall, this album beat ATYCLB to the #2 spot in their debut weeks). Jay-Z's album, which beat ATYCLB to the #1 spot in their debut weeks, has been out of the Top 100 for several months. Stevie Nicks' "Trouble in Shangri-La" fell out of the Top 100 in its 11th week. Sade and Snoop Dogg, two artists that kept pace with U2 for a while, have long since disappeared from the Top 100. Radiohead's "Amnediac? dropped to #74 in its 7th week on the charts. Aerosmith's album is #94 in its 21st week on the charts. N'Sync's "Celebrity" is the #1 album in the U.S. as it sold 1.89 million copies its first week. While outstanding, this is a drop from the 2.4 million copies "No Strings Attached" sold in its debut week. "No Strings..." dropped to 800,000 copies sold its second week. Currently, "Celebrity" is on track to sell 600,000 copies its second week.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run: #33-35-32-48-55-65-92-out of the Top 100.

"Elevation" peaked at #8 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. This is the highest "Elevation" has reached on any U.S. chart so far. "Beautiful Day" peaked at #5 on the Modern Rock charts, while "Walk On" peaked at #10. The highest "Beautiful Day" reached on any chart was #1 on the Dance Charts.

Although ATYCLB is now slowly declining on the U.S. charts, it has now sold over 2.7 million copies in the U.S. and should obtain 3x Platinum status soon.

The return of the tour in the autumn could significantly rejuvenate the album. If "Stuck..." is able to become a hit on the Adult Top 40 charts, this should keep ATYCLB in the Top 100. At present, "Stuck..." has yet to appear on any U.S. chart. As we all observed, Jennifer Lopez's album lept from #66 to #17 this week due to a Top 10 hit. Therefore, if "Stuck..." can make some radio noise, ATYCLB should remain in the Top 100 until the return of the tour. Of significance is the fact that ATYCLB sold over one million copies in the U.S. in both 2000 and 2001. It sold approximately 1,582,000 last year and approximately 1,159,000 copies this year.

There is no other U2 album or song on the U.S. charts this week. However, the single CD version of the "Best Of" is now certified as Platinum in the U.S. This means that all of U2's albums have gone Platinum or better in the U.S.

In Canada, ATYCLB falls from #33 to #38 its 39th week. Here is its run to date:

1-1-5-8-11-11-12-8-16-17
14-17-20-25-29-30-12-18-22-24
23-25-22(TP)-18-17-21-26(4P)-27-30-24
13-19-17-21-26-27-31-33-38

ATYLCB is certified as 4x Platinum in Canada (400,000 copies sold).

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run in Canada: #11-9-11-18-20-33-44-60. It sold approximately 7,500-6,500 copies for the first five weeks of its release.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" has had the following run: #4-8-19-29-36-51-73-74-78-98-out of the Top 100. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" debuted at #1 with over 48,000 copies sold. It has had the following chart run in Canada: #1-4-8-16-21-34-41-46. N'Sync's "Celebrity" is the #1 album in Canada. It sold 71,245 copies in the past week, which is down from the 104,897 copies "No Strings Attached" sold in its debut week. While these are still outstanding sales, this percent drop between the two albums is similar to what was observed in the U.S.

"Elevation" remains the #1 song on Canada's CD singles sales chart this week - for the third consecutive week. Although I was told that Canada is now combining the sales of both versions of a CD single into one, it appears that Canada is once again charting different versions of a CD single separately. "Elevation-Part 2" is #1 while "Elevation-Part 1" is #2 for the second consecutive week. "Elevation-Part 1" was #1 two weeks ago. "Elevation" holds off a charge from the cheaply priced (just 49 cents in the U.S.) Mariah Carey CD, "Loverboy." That CD single charts at #3 this week, up from #5.

"Elevation" is the third #1 single U2 has had on this chart from ATYCLB. "Walk On" and "Beautiful Day" also reached #1 on Canada's CD singles sales chart. Three #1 singles from ATYCLB surpasses the success U2 had with "POP" in Canada. The combined sales from both CD singles allowed "Walk On" to spend 6 weeks at #1. Musique Vs U2's "New Years Dub" peaked at #10.

R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" peaked at #5 and Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" peaked at #2 on Canada's CD singles sales chart.

The CD singles market in Canada is weak though and more emphasis should be placed on the airplay charts. "Elevation" peaked on Canada's "The Hits" chart at #15. This week it charts at #38 (a slight drop from #35). R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" peaked at #24 Canada's "The Hits" chart. It is currently #85.

Week 40 news for the U.S. and Canada will be posted later this week. Also, when the Irish album charts are updated, I will provide that information here.

Thanks for the chart update Dr. Who! In Week 38 which was 10 days ago, REM was spending its 9th week on chart at #190! I'll find out tomorrow if it survived one more week on the Billboard 200 or not. Surprising to see it fade so fast!

waiting for doctorwho ( master of the charts
wink.gif
) here are week 40 news from uk and australia:

UK: ATYCLB #23 (up 7 places from week 39)
Elevation #24 (down from #13 of the previous week)
australia: ATYCLB #38 (#29 in week 39)
Elevation #45 (down from #36)

thanks, as always, doctorwho. Interestingly enough, if we can believe hitsdailydouble.com. Which I know can be a bit sketchy. On August 2nd they reported that they thought N'sync would sell around mid 600 thousand for their second week (a 65% drop).

But looking at the building album sales chart, with about 19% of the information in, they sit at about 92,000. If this info is right (which it may not be) they would only end up at around 475,000 sold which would be over a 75% decrease in sales! If they were to go the way of the BSB's latest album, which is quite possible, they would only end up selling around 3.5 million copies (to consumers)before dropping out of the top 100. This would be a BIG blow to the teen music scene.

I wait and hope

Hello, this is the Netherlands speaking.
Here are the results of the Dutch jury.

In its 40th week on the charts ATYCLB again storms into the top 10 as it jumps from #15 to #7.
The total run so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

The concerts in the Netherlands last week have also boosted the sales of The Best Of 1980-1990 as that album skyrockets from #43 to #9 in its 88th week. Its last three positions were:
57-43-9
(sorry, don't have data for the other 84 weeks).

As already reporten in another thread Elevation wrestles to the top spot, dethroning Shaggy, as it moves 17-1 in its 5th week. The total chart run of Elevation is:
11-7-13-17-1
This is only U2's second #1 hit in the Netherlands with Beautiful Day being the first.

Oh, U2 set also another sales record. For more information about that one please see my reply in the 'Elevation hits #1' thread.

C ya!

WOW,
Melissa finally responded with some info! Thats interesting and gives us a better estimate. I guess we were off by 9,000 copies for the total which is not bad at all. Thanks for the info Dr. Who!
In week 39, U2 sells 16,700 copies and lands at #88, all that with virtually NO radio airplay! Thats right, ELEVATION is now completely gone from both the MODERN ROCK chart and MAINSTREAM ROCK chart! It was at #33 On Modern Rock in week 38, and #40 on Mainstream Rock, but now it has disappeared from both charts. No sign of U2 on any radio airplay chart for any song except the minor Dance/Club chart where Elevation actually moves from #47 to #41.
Elevation has now completely left the MTV chart. At VH1, Elevation hangs on at #12.
N'SYNC might sell as little as 400,000 copies this week.
WomenFish,
Where did you get the soundscan figure for BSBs latest only at 3.5 million, I thought they had passed 5 million scanned? Its interesting to note that Billboard magazine mentioned BSBs latest album in article last week, and when they usually talk about sales, they give the soundscan figure, but instead they simply said that the album had shipped 8 million copies in the USA.
N'SYNC only made it into the top 10 in one other country besides Canada and the USA, Germany. It entered at #5 in Germany. Overall though, it only sold about 250,000 copies outside the USA in its first week.

Sorry I didn't really clarify my statement about 'nsync. I mean that if they keep having big percentage decline (like Backstreet Boys did) they could end up selling that little.

Does anyone have any info on how long BSB stayed in the top 10, top 50 and top 100?

If 'nsync were to fade to around 80 - 90 in 10 or 12 weeks, which is possible with no hit single (yet) and a lousy tour that's half over. Just by making a downward sales progression like this - 1.88, 450k, 250k, 175k, 150k, 125k, 100k, 75k, 50k, 40k, 40k, 30k, 20k, 15k - I come up with about 3.4 million copies. Now they may come up with a big hit and that could all change. But I don't think Backstreet stayed on the charts much longer than 12 weeks or so, but I know they racked up some big sales in the first 3 weeks.

Great to see the new numbers (I figured we were a little high)
smile.gif

Looks like Stuck might make it to the airwaves too!!! Let's get requesting!

Anywhere in Boston doctorwho that we could call or email to request?

Well folks, I hate to gloat when it comes to someones poor performance, but when it involves 'nsync I don't really mind
smile.gif

The numbers are in at hitsdailydouble and 'nsync dropped almost 77% this week and sold only 457,000 copies! Compare this to the performance of their last album:

No Strings - first week 2.4, second week 850,000, total for first 2 weeks = 3.25 million.

Celebrity - first week 1.89, second week 457,000, total for first 2 weeks = 2.35 million

That's almost a million fewer copies sold in the first two weeks!

Next week will be the real clincher as to what direction their album is going.

Does anyone know how many copies ATYCLB has sold worldwide, alltogether?

Hello all,

I've been able to come up with some chart trivia about U2 in the Netherlands. All the numbers are for the first six months unless indicated differently.

After six months U2 is still in the top 5 of best-sold albums, standing at #5 with All That You Can't Leave Behind. This is one position down from the results after the 1st quarter when U2 was #4. This drop of one position is solely because of the album of K-Otic (the Dutch Popstars/Hear'Say/etc). ATYCLB has sold 42% of the copies of that album so I'm guessing ATYCLB has sold about 80.000-100.000 copies these six months (in the Netherlands 80.000 copies is platinum).

After 6 months Stuck... is also at #5 in the airplay charts. Interestingly, the song was only #8 after the 1st quarter (ending March 31). As the song had a short sales lifespan (the song is #83 in the sales top 100) it seems radio is still fond of playing Stuck... Nice!

As the first half ended June 30 there is no trace of Elevation (as the single was released July 2)

For those of you who want to read more about the charts, here is the link: http://web.planet.nl/music/megaman/kwartaal.shtml#s1
There is only one caveat: everything is in Dutch :)

ATYCLB slips to #99 in the U.S. this week.

The first 40 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB has been able to spend 40 consecutive weeks in the Top 100 thus far.

I do not have the SoundScan numbers for this week, however, based on last week's numbers, the #99 album sold 14,600 copies. Therefore, I will estimate 15,000 copies of ATYCLB were sold this week.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 40 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 40 weeks are: 2,747,000.

ATYCLB is on the verge of falling from the Top 100. I do not subscribe to Billboard, therefore, once it falls out, I will be unable to monitor its progress unless Melissa sends me SoundScan data. Therefore, STING, we will have to rely on you to tell us of ATYCLB chart performance in future weeks. Using the SoundScan data I do have, we can then estimate sales for each week.

Although ATYCLB is #99, there is still a chance it might rebound in the coming weeks. If "Stuck..." is receiving as much airplay in Top 40 as "hitsdailydouble.com" suggested, then the album will certainly be rejuvenated. There is a precedent for this event. Jennifer Lopez's album debuted at #1. After approximately 20 weeks, her album fell out of the Top 100. However, thanks to another hit song, her album has flown back up the charts back to #12 (this week). To fly from the depths of the charts all the way back to the Top 15 in a matter of weeks is incredible - and it stresses the power of a hit song. Another example is "Brand New Day" by Sting. Sting's album had been out for a year before it flew up the charts thanks to the success of "Desert Rose." A third example is "Hotshot." Shaggy's album had fallen out of the Top 100 shortly after its debut, only to sky-rocket to the #1 spot thanks to two hit singles ("It Wasn't Me" and "Angel"). Therefore, if "Stuck..." gets some serious airplay, expect ATYCLB to bounce back.

The return of the tour most likely won't rejuvenate the album - it will just keep it going where it is. For example, look at Madonna's album and her current U.S. tour. Last week, "Music" was #123, the week before #137 and the week before that it was #140. The difference in sales between #123 and #137 is about 1500 copies. "Music" has been out of the Top 100 for some time, yet thanks to the tour, it has received a small push (not big enough to put it back in the Top 100) to mostly keep its sales steady. Unless "Music" produces another hit single, expect the album to sell around 10-15,000 copies each week for the next few months.

Of course, those sales do add up - after 3 months, that's another 120-180,000 copies sold. If U2's album performs similarly, by its one year anniversary, we could see 3x Platinum certification.

The only other U2 news on the U.S. charts this week is the return of "The Best Of" to the Top 20 on the catalog charts. It jumps from #24 to #18, meaning sales of around 6-7,000 copies for the week. The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack is out of the Top 100.

The #1 album on the U.S. charts this week is "Now That's What I Call Music: Volume 7" with 621,419 copies sold. This is more than enough to push N Sync's "Celebrity" to #2 as it sells 459,742 copies. This represents a mind-boggling 76% decrease in sales from Week 1 to Week 2 for N'Sync's latest album (the album sold over 1.89 million copies last week). N'Sync's last album, "No Strings Attached" saw a tad more respectable 67% drop in sales from Week 1 to Week 2 - and more importantly, its Week 2 sales were still an incredible 800,000 copies. That said, it should be noted that "Celebrity" still sold 2.35 million copies in just 2 weeks in the U.S. U2's ATYCLB has sold 2.75 million copies in the U.S. in 40 weeks. Of course, to "defend" U2, N'Sync's album did not debut well in most countries around the world (outside of the U.S. and Canada). The album didn't even crack the Top 10 in the U.K. and has fallen out of the Top 25 in just its second week. Therefore, expect U2's ATYCLB to have stronger worldwide sales that N'Sync's "Celebrity."

In Canada, ATYCLB falls from #38 to #43 its 40th week. Here is its run to date:

1-1-5-8-11-11-12-8-16-17
14-17-20-25-29-30-12-18-22-24
23-25-22(TP)-18-17-21-26(4P)-27-30-24
13-19-17-21-26-27-31-33-38-43

ATYLCB is certified as 4x Platinum in Canada (400,000 copies sold). This is the lowest the album has been in Canada. However, if U2 return to Canada during the third leg, there will definitely be a jump on the charts.

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack has had the following run in Canada: #11-9-11-18-20-33-44-60-80. It sold approximately 7,500-6,500 copies for the first five weeks of its release.

R.E.M.'s "Reveal" spent 10 weeks in the Canadian Top 100, debuting at #4. Radiohead's "Amnesiac" debuted at #1 with over 48,000 copies sold. It has had the following chart run in Canada: #1-4-8-16-21-34-41-46-51. N'Sync's "Celebrity" is the #1 album in Canada for the second week. It sold 71,245 copies it its week, which is down from the 104,897 copies "No Strings Attached" sold in its debut week.

"Elevation" remains the #1 song on Canada's CD singles sales chart this week - for the fourth consecutive week. Although I was told that Canada is now combining the sales of both versions of a CD single into one, it appears that Canada is once again charting different versions of a CD single separately. "Elevation-Part 2" is #1 while "Elevation-Part 1" is #2 for the third consecutive week. "Elevation-Part 1" was #1 three weeks ago. "Elevation" holds off a charge Destiny's Child's "Survivor" which charts at #3 this week.

This week it charts at #54 (down from #38). R.E.M.'s "Imitation of Life" peaked at #24 Canada's "The Hits" chart. It fell out of the Top 100 airplay chart this week.

That's it for Week 40. Great news in Europe, where the tour is going strong, but poor news in countries like the U.S. and Canada, where the tour has departed, and Australia where news of no tour has probably hurt album sales.

Hello doctorwho (and all the others),

Regarding the policy of being included in the Billboard Top 200 and the Pop Catalog Chart... Well, when you look up the charts you have to look more closely to what you're watching
smile.gif

At the bottom of the Pop Catalog Chart (or at least, the first 20 entries), just below the entry for The Best Of 1980-1990 it says:
Chart Key
Compiled from a national sample of retail store, mass merchant, and Internet sales reports collected, compiled, and provided by SoundScan.
Catalog albums are 2-year-old titles that have fallen below No. 100 on The Billboard 200 or reissues of older albums. Weeks On Chart column reflects combined weeks title has appeared on The Billboard 200 and Top Pop Catalog Albums.

So, an album has to be at least 2 years old to get removed from the Billboard 200 (although exceptions can be made in special cases).

Just to clear that up.

C ya!

P.S. ATYCLB almost falling off the Billboard 100, bummer!

yes, it's a sad day. We see U2 on the verge of "the end" for this album. Although I am still hopeful that Stuck may get some more airplay and that they may get a little boost from MTV music awards, and then the tour comes back. With all those things considered they may hang in the top 80-100 for another couple months.

I am surprised that they dropped so much in just one week seeing as how they went up one spot last week. One thing to take into consideration are the 12 debuts in the top 75 this week. This was bound to effect ATYCLB, but I was hoping not to this extent.

Well, I am off to send some emails to radio stations to play stuck. I would love for it to become a hit.

Let's not bury ATYCLB just yet. Stuck has been released to radio, the video should be premiered relatively soon and U2 will be performing at the VMA's. If they're smart they'll perform a song from ATYCLB, maybe even Stuck. Taken in conjunction this could shoot U2 back up the charts a bit. Either way the album will sell 3 million copies in the U.S. which is more than Pop or Zooropa. Take a look at the sales for the last few R.E.M., Pearl Jam and Radiohead albums and rejoice. Most of U2's contemporaries are being unfairly relagated to commericial also rans by hip-hop, rap-metal and teen pop.

I'm surprised ATYCLB fell that far this week when it looked like it was holding steady. Still this is impressive with no radio airplay. The promotion for this album will continue all the way to May 2002(two months after the Grammy's) So for the next 9 months, there will be many chances to increase sales with awards shows, concerts, new singles, new video's. I know for many here that leaving the top 100 of billboard feels like the end, but every monday, the newstand puts out billboard so I'll be able to see the top 200. It might be 4 or 5 weeks before ATYCLB jets back into the top 100, but I'm almost positive it will happen.
With sales slowing to 14,600, it means that it might be as much as 3 months before we see that triple platinum certification. I think it will be sooner because I think sales will go up in September after the MTV awards and "Stuck" starts to pick up some steam!
Remember, when an album is this far down the chart, any heavy promotion can have a major impact on chart position.
Dr. Who, could give the soundscan figures for #150 and #200 for last week? Thanks!

Sure it is a sad event that the album may be leaving the top 100 in the US - but hey triple platinum coming up in the next month or so is a great result. And the album is going great guns in Europe - top 20 in most countries and sales now over 5m in Europe. The album would now be nudging very close to 10m worldwide now in sales so it may get to 12m possibly by Christmas if another couple of singles do well - this will be a stretch though. ATYCLB is now their most successful studio album since Actung Baby.

As Doctor Who said, it is up to Stuck to send the album back up the charts in the US -we will just have to wait and see on that one.

Popmartijn - Netherland record sales are very close to those in Australia. Here the album has gone 4x platinum (70,000 platinum) and is very close to 5x platinum (350,000).
The album has done very well in Australia, but looking at your chart stats - it has done even better in the Netherlands (One of U2's strongest markets in the world). I remember reading that ATYCLB sold approx 200K before Christmas so now must be over 300K for sales in your country.

Do you have a platinum status for sales for ATYCLB.

German charts:

ATYCLB moves down from #31 to #39 in its 33th week on the German album chart (it has been out of the Top 100 for several weeks). Still no sign of a platinum certification.

The Best Of 1980-90 moves up from #80 to #72.

Elevation moves down to #52. Elevation's run on Germany's singles chart: 31-47-43-39-52

Hello,

The last time I checked ATYCLB still was 'only' 2x platinum. However, the album has this status a few months now. I have to look what the status is of the #1 album of the first half year to estimate the extra sales of ATYCLB (as they are 42% of those sales).

So officially it still is 2x platinum, but I guess they're at least at 3x now (maybe even approaching 4x).

C ya!
