I'm starting to believe now that 'Surrender' could be the most underrated U2 song of all time. Here's a song that would have been a top 10 single, hands down, and is losing to 'Dirty Day', a song that was great live but rather flat on the album? There is no justice!

Song by song, War is a stronger album, IMO, but as a full album, Zooropa captures its time better than War does and, in it's own quiet way, leaves a deeper impression than the fist pumping of War. Nothing beats War for sheer passion, however. They're completetely different albums, and these differences go beyond a song by song comparison.

In my opinion WAR slaughters Zooropa although I still think Zooropa is a good album.

Song by song it was a little closer, but WAR still came out on top.

As far as the time thing, every U2 fan that I new in July of 1993 that bought Zooropa when it was released would have been horrified if they new signficant numbers of U2 fans 10 years later would consider Zooropa better than WAR. Back then, WAR was probably most fans favorite U2 album after the Joshua Tree. Many fans were upset when U2 did not play any albums from war on the first leg of the ZOO TV tour.

WAR has certainly been a much stronger album in its effect on the popularity of the band. WAR saved U2 from being dropped from their lable and brought in over a million new fans for the band.

ZOOROPA on the other hand confused or disgusted most fans, at least initially in July of 1993. Its a big reason why the demand for U2 4 years later on POP had already been reduced.

Although I think WAR was much stronger in its time than Zooropa, I also think one of the problems with Zooropa was that it was a bit ahead of its time. The reaction from most fans in July 1993 was, "what the hell is this". Over time I have come to recognized the strenths of Zooropa, but its still not on the level of War.
