What was the reply? Just an automated thing?
Barbara, thanks for trying but the books are gone. Thanks. Henry
Here you are folks, the set list from tonight's show. Next week my special
guest will be the one and only Heidi May and we will see what she has to
say for herself but in any case, I'm sure there will be fireworks aplenty.
I hope you enjoyed tonight's show, I think we got some good ones over the
wall. The show will come on again Thursday night at midnight until 0200
hrs. Friday morning. Thanks. Henry
Rare Essence - Get Busy One Time: Live At Breeze's Metro Club. I got this
the other day. It's a good CD. I don't think they made many of this one.
There's another live one I found as well, has the same looking cover, it's
live from somewhere else. I am waiting for it to arrive. Remember the
other week when we heard these guys do Lock-It? Another great DC band.
Bad Brains - Pay to Cum: From the Black Dots album. The Bad Brains
recorded this as a demo in August of 1979. It was a tape that got passed
around in the DC scene quite a bit. I still have the copy that singer HR
gave me around that time. To me, this single recording session is as
important and relevant to Punk-Independent music as Never Mind the
Bullocks or Nevermind. I also think, (he puts on his corny critic cap and
clocks in . . .) that if they had released this in 1979, it would have
been an immediate lightning rod, here's your godhead punk release of the
decade. It's interesting that all these years later, this tape finally
gets released. This is a must-have album.
The Warmers - Walking Solves It: From the Warmers album on Dischord. I
think I've played something off this before but I checked all the lists of
stuff I played and couldn't find anything. Something tells me I played
this song weeks ago but what the heck, it's a good one and singer Alec has
a birthday coming up so we might as well hear something off this fine
release. Great album. In print, on Dischord.
Slim - Don't Touch That Stereo: One of my favorite DC Go-Go 12"'s of all
time. This is a version off a Go-Go comp. 2CD set I picked up in Munich in
the 90's I think. It's got a bad edit part way through that might get past
some of you but it sticks out. At some point, I will make a CDR of the
real deal and we'll play that but for now, this will rock. What I know
about this single is what I've heard and I don't know if it's correct. I
heard that the band is Trouble Funk and Slim is/was a local DC DJ. You can
hear Trouble's Pump Me Up flown into the track at some point.
Minor Threat - Stepping Stone: From the Minor Threat Complete Discography
CD. Don Zientara of Inner Ear Studios did this mix on his own and played
for Ian when Ian came into mix the session. Ian liked it and so it goes.
SS was a kind of in-joke amongst DC bands. Everybody did it. It was a cool
song and it's easy to play and sing so everyone started doing it. I think
the first time I heard a band do it on a regular basis was when the Teen
Idles would play it from time to time. Of all the versions, I think the MT
one is my favorite.
Trouble Funk - So Early In The Morning: A great Trouble 12" single. Golly,
if you like this song, you should get the whole 2CD set of early Trouble
singles and the amazing live album available from where? From that great
label District Line! Well priced and ready to go from the friendly folks
at:

Teen Idles - Get Up and Go: From the Teen Idles Minor Disturbance EP. The
Teen Idles single was the first ever Dischord release. Here's something
kinda lame that I did but I'll tell you: When the Teen Idles EP came out,
it was a big deal in our small DC music scene. Record stores weren't all
that interested in some band hawking their single so they allowed a few
copies to sit on the shelf on consignment. Ian took five of the TI EP and
put them in a record store down the street from where I worked. I went on
a break and bought all of them. I figured it was an important record. I
kept them in the plastic bags they came in until last year when I took
them out and transferred them to other bags and stored them.
Rites of Spring - Nudes: From the End on End + EP CD on Dischord. One of
the most played records I own. I think we listened to one of their songs,
Hidden Wheel weeks ago. What a blazing album.
Experience Unlimited - Da Butt: Featured in an early Spike Lee film. Best
part of the film. A great DC Go-Go band. I'll put some of their stuff on
CDR and bring it in.
And so the big chunk of DC jams comes to an end and we're onto other stuff
. . .
James Brown - Sex Machine: From the Revolution of the Mind album. This is
my favorite live album of all time. At least it's really live and not
overdubbed like so many of these bitch rock bands live albums are. What a
waste of your audience's time. If you're going to go live, then be able to
play your damn songs. If you knew how many live albums are barely live at
all, you might get mad. On the other hand, you might not give a damn. This
is one smokin' album. JB and the band are an ultimate unit. I sat next to
JB once and told a reporter that Revolution of the Mind was the greatest
live album of all time. JB yelled, "This man knows what he's talking
about!" and hugged me. It was a great moment.
Alan Vega Trio - Freedom: From the Cubist Blues album. Alan Vega, Ben
Vaughn and Alex Chilton. What a line-up. A dream band. They just went in
and did this record. I begged them to let me release this and they let me
and we released it and NO ONE CARED! It's not like it's not GREAT.
Releasing this album and Vega's amazing Dujang Prang album made me see
that trying to turn people on to really good music is for the most part, a
thankless job and not worth the fucking time. I decreased my releases on
my labels right after these came out and have never gone back to anywhere
near that amount of releases a year again. The aggravation wasn't worth it
at all. Bitter?! Me?! Never!!!!
The Victims - I've Flipped Out Over You: From the Tales From The
Australian Underground CD set. Tim Pittman of Feel Productions put out
this very cool compilation CD set in Australia some time ago. He's put on
all my shows in Australia from the first time I went there until now and
he's booking next year's shows there as I write this. This is a great song
and the actual single will cost you way too much. Good on Tim for getting
this one out.
The Fall - Garden: From the Perverted By Language album. This might by my
favorite Fall song. It's a little long for radio but I figured what the
hell. This album is amazing. I listen all over the Fall catalog but come
back to this album quite often. Next week, we're in for a real treat for
Fall fans. We're going to hear a Fall song called Job Search that the band
gave John Peel an acetate copy of for his birthday. I taped it off his
show. It's cool and rare as hell. And next year, if we're lucky, the 6CD
Fall Peel Sessions set comes out. If it really happens I will be a very
happy bitter middle-aged man.
Skull Snaps - I'm Your Pimp: From the Skull Snaps album. Melvin Gibbs
turned me onto these guys. I think my version is a bootleg and a real
version of this came out a year or so later due to DJ and collector
demand. Here's a really cool website that will give you more info:
http://www.musthear.com/reviews/skullsnaps.html
Play Dead - The Poison Takes A Hold: From the Fresh Records Punk Singles
Collection CD. Cool Goth music. There's some singles, LPs, CDs, etc. I
think almost all of it's out of print. Makes for some interesting nights
of searching.
http://www.waste.org/~winkles/playdead/ for more info.
Roky Erickson - I Walked With A Zombie: From the Reverend Of Karmic Youth
CD. There are no bad Roky songs, just not enough Roky songs.
Ramones - Born to Die in Berlin: From the Adios Amigos! album. I asked
Johnny Ramone about one of the songs on this record when I was hanging out
with him the other night, I always thought that the song Life is a Gas was
kinda sad, like Joey saying goodbye. Johnny said no, it wasn't supposed to
be sad. The song has a sad ring to it though. This song though, damn, what
a house wrecker. Has a little Stooges No Fun in the riff but what the
hell.
Tommy Johnson - Cool Drink of Water Blues: I think JLP of the Gun Club
spent some time listening to this man if you check out the Fire of Love
album, you might think the same. You can get all of Johnson's recorded
output on one CD. Great stuff.

The Cravats - I Am the Dreg: A great Cravats track. And one day, there
will be a real Cravats CD set for us to enjoy and that will be cool! Info:
