U2 have been named and shamed as the creators of the most disastrous stage shows of all time. The Irish rockers came top of a survey by US magazine Blender for the set on their 1997 Popmart world tour. The concert was plagued with a string of errors including smoking the audience out with special effects and getting trapped in a giant lemon that they were using as a stage prop. Blender magazine writes, "No musician is immune to the catastrophe of the onstage meltdown... absurd sets, drunken lead singers and horribly exposed miming." Other artists listed in the top ten were JEFFERSON STARSHIP and THE EVERLY BROTHERS.

I really hate how people base their opinion of a tour that lasted an entire year(a few weeks shy of it, anyway) on two or three isolated incidents, in the process overlooking the many, many, many shows from that tour that went off without a hitch. A lot of those shows were amazing, but a lot of people would never know it because Popmart is always painted in a bad light because of those 'incidents', which were few and far between.

Blender is like toilet paper anyway. I wouldn't get worked up over it.

Exactly. Who gives a stuff what a magazine writer thinks?

Well, it seems to indicate that this was the result of survey, which makes it seems as though it's the collective opinion of the public(assuming the public is the group that was surveyed) rather than the opinion of a writer.

Let me rephrase - who gives a stuff about a magazine survey? As long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters.

so it went from a good magazine to a great one?

i may need to get a subscription :hmm:

I'm not even a huge Popmart fan and Blender can still kiss my ass...morons.

I know even less about Popmart than I do about ZooTV, but from what I do know, it doesn't sound too bad. I've seen clips here and there, like the intro to Gone from Mexico City. I've heard so much about this concert. And Popmart had Edge singing Sunday Bloody Sunday!!

I'm really starting not to take notice of what people write about U2 any more. Like that website that said Mofo was a lame opener on Pop. Idiot.

Come, Bono is only drunk when he is in France, and U2 only mimes on TOTP like everyone else :)

Well, Edge mimes the vocals in Vertigo live, but don't tell anyone!

At least on some of the shows he does, because I remember one TV appearence where it was painfully obvious Edge was shouting into the mic for the 'holas' and it wasn't pretty

Visually, it was the greatest concert setup ever over PF's The Wall and ZooTV. Musically, shows could range from great to horrible but mostly great. When you see Popmart Mexico, your life will change. COBL you *must* see a complete Popmart show or your life will not be complete.
