I am officially insane.
Providence, here I come!

U2 was perfect last night!
Some of the high-lights for me:
-The NY changed lyrics...are you all right baby?
-The Edge's powerful ending of NY.
-The bono kicks during NY.
-Bono using the microphone stand as a prop.
-Bono's boyish look as he stood like the Statue of Liberty.
-Larry's face during Stuck, he was enjoying himself.
-Bono's voice during Stuck.
-The Edge's solo in Stuck.
-The Bono & Adam interaction during Stuck.
-Bono's astonished look as the audience cheered before the interview.
-Bono's story about the FDNY and NYPD on the Elevation stage.
-Oh yeah, and seeing Bono's Rosary.

Show #1696
by Michael Z. McIntee
(Mikemack@aol.com)
News From The Late Show Home Office
David Hyde Pierce; and U2.
PLUS: The upcoming Emmy Awards on CBS; a recap of Paul and the band's performance at the Concert For New York City; Dave phones Stephanie; and a sad farewell to a lovely lady.

U2: Two songs! First up was "New York," followed by "Stuck In A Moment." During "New York," Bono stuck 4 fingers behind his head and held the microphone skyward. That was his Statue of Liberty. If you closed your eyes, you would have thought you were looking at the actual Statue of Liberty.

I thought it was cute, too! Had it been anyone else but Bono it might've been cheesy as someone else said, but to me it was goofy in a sweet and endearing way. He's the cutest--just wanna squeeze him.

Amazing performance. New York is still my least favorite track off of ATYCLB (shoulda been a b-side IMO), but the band really kicks it into overdrive live. Stuck was done so well (hope the next album has some Edge lead vocals)...nice to see them do the whole version and not the lame radio version that cuts off the "i never thought you were a fool" verse.

I still wish they would have the whole band in the end for the interview...not just Bono, especially when there's not really too much time left and you can't get into any major discussions anyway. It would be nice to see the band talking as a whole every now and then...(even though Larry and Adam probably don't want to be in the limelight that much).

I just watched my tape. It was great. I will probably never see New York again without tears in my eyes. It was always such a powerful song for me and more so now. And Stuck was beautiful. And Bono has such a darling smile when he talks.
smile.gif
Except I think I missed the end of the interview. The tape cut off right when they went to an ad break in the interview. Was there more after that?? Sorry, don't have time to read other posts about this now, I have to run!

Very energetic, but if I have to be super critical I would have to say that Bono's voice was a little bit rough as well.

However, by any standards, a damn fine performance.

Interview was a little bit short, wasn't it?

Anyway.....I also love the little 'yeah yeah' thing Bono did before "stuck" I think he did that at the VMAs, too.

Well, I'm too lazy to post my thoughts on U2 on Letterman twice, so here's what I posted to Wire today:

Well first off, I just want to let you know how much
> I love David
> Letterman, I've loved the guy for years. His
> sarcasm, wit,
> self-deprecating humor, his jabs at himself and at
> CBS, his rappor with
> Paul Shaffer, his mom, his other friends and even
> when he gets emotional
> like
> when he returned from surgery last year and then
> when he returned after
> the terrorism attacks.
>
> So with that being said, it was quite a thrill for
> me to see my favorite
> band on my favorite late night show.
smile.gif

>
> I should have been in bed last night and just taped
> the thing, but I
> wanted to put it on my U2 compilation video lol so I
> stayed up. And I'm
> tired this morning here at work, but it was well
> worth it.
>
> Dave is a class act and I loved his jokes, his stuff
> with Paul and his
> tribute to his set designer.
frown.gif
But of course I
> loved him with our boys.
>
> LOL as far as the intro, Bono and Larry had been on
> the show in '97 during
> PopMart so they have been there before, though this
> was the first time for
> the entire band. So welcoming them back to the show

>

> show. Yes Bono's voice
> sounded a bit hoarse. Was it overly bad? Not
> in my humble opinion,
> it's understandable with the schedule they've had as
> of late. And
> actually, I thought the way his voice sounded
> gravelly made him sound
> sexier. LOL but maybe I'm biased.

>
> Okay ladies, how hot was the band? They all were,
> but Bono especially was
> looking good. SIGH. Showing some skin. Hehe,
> drool fest majorly.

>
> I loved the one-on-one between Bono and Dave, for me
> how much more perfect
> could it have been (well of course I'd like the

> Dave was talking
> about What's Going On and Bono said he was asked to
> do something for the
> cause of AIDS in Africa and he said it would be
> typical or something for
> him to do it, why not get Britney Spears, Jennifer
> Lopez and the rappers
> and pop. Dave and everybody laughed. Hehe. And
> Dave's like, "So you had
> to set up the gig yourself." That brought a grin to
> Bono who was like,
> "yeah had to set up the place and time, that

> enjoyed him talking about

> Sweet moment when Bono

> his brother.

I can't even say the bloody word Achhhhhtung Baby"--Larry

I need to go watch my video again to get the details, cause I was too tired to catch everything last night, but from what I remember, the band was in top form, both songs were excellent. Bono's voice was a little hoarse but still strong; nice back-ups from The Edge (and a nice sweater!). I sensed during Stuck that Bono was really trying so hard to move everyone past the trajedy in New York.

The interview was great, imagine the network allowed the show to go over 4 mins to get more of it in! Seemed to me, though, that Bono was a bit nervous here, not his usual self when he gets the limelight, so maybe Dave was going hard on him like he will on big name guests. Nice mention that "even with this trajedy Americans are still thinking about aid to the poor in Africa." I thought it was funny when the audience laughed at the mention of Britney; I don't think Bono was expecting it and he seemed a bit taken aback. I remember something funny to the effect that the NYPD and FD on stage were like seeing his Irish buddies at home. Cute. Sure would have liked to have seen the whole band interviewed.

I was looking for DB9 in the audience...very lucky if you were there! The crowd was wild for the band!

Thanks Dave for finally having the band on!!!

I thought that the overall performance was good, maybe its just me ,but I thought Bono's voice was really rough. Thats just me though.

WOW, just got around to seeing the tape. Frickin incredible!

Any other old timers see the Bono of the 80s singing there?? Or was it just me? He seemed to bellow rather than sing a bit there like he used to do back in the 80s. What do you think???

I agree, actually, it did sound rough. It kind of suited the songs but I was a bit worried.

Oh, and apparently after the ad break in the interview, Bono just said bye and that was it.
