Anyone have any info on when and who U2 has opened for in the past?

You can check U2.com's timeline or U2-related books for U2's earlier days. I know they have opened for the J.Geils band, but dunno other bands.

I suggest you read the book “2 Live: A Concert Documentary”
by Pimm Jal de la Parra.

According to that book, they played as support band for:

*Revolver, early in 1978 at the Mcgonagle’s, Dublin (they were still called The Hype by then).

*Modern Heirs and Revolver, again at Mcgonagle’s, July 31, 1978 (the band had changed the name to U2).

*The Stranglers, September 9, 1978 at Top Hat Ballroom.

*The Greedy Bastards, a band made up of members of Thin Lizzy and The Sex Pistols, at the Stardust, Dublin, December 1978.

*Patrick Fitzgerald (two shows) in September 1979 at The Project Arts Centre.

*The Dolly Mixtures, December 1, 1979. West Hampstead, Moonlight Club.

*The Dolly Mixtures, December 5, 1979. Covent Garden.

*Secret Affair, December 2, 1979. Earl’s Court.

*The Talking Heads, December 7, 8, 1979, Camden, Electric Ballroom.

*Idiot Dancers, December 11, 1979. Canning Town.

*The Photos, December 12, 1979. Uxbridge.

*Tony Stevens Showband, February 1980. Tullermeny.

*The Talking Heads (Two shows in London and one in Paris), December, 1980.

*Talas, December 8, 1980. Buffalo, NY.

*Barooga, December 13, 1980. Boston, MA.

*The J. Geils Band, March 25,19852. Phoenix, AZ.

*The J. Geils Band, March 29, 30, 1985. San Francisco, CA.

Apart from The Stranglers, The Talking Heart, The Sex Pistols and Thin Lizzy I had never heard of the other bands before.

You never heard of the J. Geils Band?

That makes me feel so old.....

Talking Heads are a good band. Never heard of the J. Geils band though  must have been big in America or something

A friend of mine actually saw them open for the J. Geils Band in either '81 or '82 in Tallahassee, FL. He had never heard of U2 and went to see the J. Geils Band - famous for their songs 'Centerfold" and "Love Stinks" by the way. However, he said U2 blew them off the stage. According to my friend's account, when U2 started their set, no one was really paying attention. By the time it was over though, the place was going nuts.

Also, he said he saw all four of them at a McDonalds after the show...accompanied by no fanfair whatsoever.

According to that book, they played as support band for:

<snip>

*Idiot Dancers, December 11, 1979. Canning Town.

According to that U2 Live book, U2 was supported by Idiot Dancers and not the other way round. :)

*The Photos, December 12, 1979. Uxbridge.

U2 also plays as support to them in July 1980 in London (not mentioned in your original post)
And I don't know if it was a festival (which I don't want to include in the list) or not, but on 7 September 1980 they play before Echo & The Bunnymen (but after three other bands) at a concert in London.
Same on 19 October 1980 at the same location, but then before Slade and after two other bands.

*The J. Geils Band, March 25,19852. Phoenix, AZ.

*The J. Geils Band, March 29, 30, 1985. San Francisco, CA.

U2 never supported the J. Geils Band in 1985, they did in 1982. These were the dates:
3 March 1982, Fort Meyers
4 March 1982, West Palm Beach
5 March 1982, Tampa
6 March 1982, Tallahassee
11 March 1982, Atlanta
12 March 1982, Memphis
13 March 1982, Louisville
14 March 1982, Indianapolis
25 March 1982, Phoenix
26 March 1982, San Diego
27 March 1982, Los Angeles
29 & 30 March 1982, San Francisco

Furthermore, they also supported the Talking Heads one more time, on 1 July 1982 in Leiden (The Netherlands).
