There's just not enough heat in Bono's Kitchen
The Kitchen nightclub, co-owned by Bono and The Edge, is to close its doors after eight years

The club, in Dublin's Clarence Hotel, will shut on May 4, when the 24 staff will be made redundant. It has suffered from falling attendance figures.

Robert van Eerde, general manager of the hotel owned by the U2 stars, said the new licensing laws, which mean pubs can stay open later, had been bad for the nightclub business.

"We have been monitoring the situation for quite some time. There are so many new places that have opened and the environment has also changed," he said. "We are looking ahead and the Kitchen needs a change. Things are changing and we want to be at the cutting edge of that."

Mr Van Eerde said attendances had been down at the club.

The nightclub, once frequented by supermodels Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, recently lost its manager, Richard Mooney. Management refused to say what will become of the Kitchen other than that it will be going through a "major refurbishment programme."

"I honestly couldn't say what is going to become of the club - it could be anything," said Mr Van Eerde.

However, those within the industry have said that the club will be toned down and turned into a celebrity drinking place.

"There have been a number of complaints from the hotel about the level of noise from the club," an industry source said.

The Kitchen is also thought to have lost a loyal following among dance music fans. "It isn't the place that it was three years ago. Other clubs won't soak up the crowd that will be left by the Kitchen closing as there is no crowd to move on," added the source.

Another source said it would probably be fashioned along the lines of other popular celebrity hangouts such as Lillies and Renards. Another major dance club has opened in the Tivoli Theatre on Francis Street.
