Thinking about these album polls, I thought of the idea of ?restoring? all of the them, at least the last 7, to 12 tracks (like AB and POP) and tweaking track list order and see if they made a difference in my ranking of them.

THE RESTORED JOSHUA TREE

Heartland was recorded during the JT sessions but dropped in favor of Trip Through Your Wires. One of the working titles of JT was ?The Two Americas? so I set up Side 1 as dealing with Central and South America. Yet, I can see
Central and South America also representing the rest of the Third World and America?s direct and indirect involvement. Silver And Gold is geographically set in South Africa?s apartheid and I believe the anger of it sets up the rage expressed in Bullet The Blue Sky. After knowing and seeing what America is doing ?outside of America?, Exit has the central character struggling with whether or not to turn to violence with and on the behalf these people. In Mothers Of The Disappeared, the central character has turned away from the response of violence and stands with and for them in sorrow. One Tree Hill continues the grieving, speaks out against the injustice and oppression, and looks to future for final and ultimate justice. In God?s Country is the bridge to America and the injustices and oppression within it, i.e., layoffs, unemployment, and cracking or broken marriages in Red Hill Mining Town and addictions, escapism, and apathy in Running To Stand Still. (Streets was written after returning from Ethiopia, Africa and seeing the difference between the First and Third Worlds) The last three songs deal with an interior conversation/struggle/agony between the central character and his/her conscience and/or God regarding all of the observations and experiences of The Two Americas.
