NOTES: CD burners and 80 minute CD-Rs are a wonderful thing. Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix) and The Hands that Built America was used to promote the album so it?s not necessary or is it theoretically appropriate. In the Q magazine didn?t Bono comment on Staring At The Sun by saying ? death by mid tempo? and then quickly left the room ? I do not dislike SATS but I would take Last Night On Earth or Night And Day over it. Night And Day is deliciously dark. It would have wonderfully fit on Achtung Baby. The First Time makes 5 songs from Zooropa. Too many ? Subtract what ? Add what ? But I would definitely stick with The First Time since it seems predestined to be the perfect complement to October as the closing track. Both with their stripped down sound and both featuring the piano. The bold and triumphant faith of the 80s versus a questioning and wandering faith of the 90s. I have seen poll after poll and thread after thread where a majority of U2 fans believe it is not appropriate to include any material from ATYCLB and I totally agree. U2 may argue that they needed more albums to choose from. I disagree. One could even argue that Beautiful Day and Stuck in a Moment which were recent ?hits? were included to promote the album to casual U2 fans and non-fans.)

well, while I agree with your ideas, I think it's a little late for them to change it now.:|

Isn't "Slug" a Passengers song? And isn't it from the album anyway? I don't really know since I haven't been able to find the album in stores yet.

As for your selection, "Night and Day" is a cover, so there's no way the band would put a cover on the A-Sides disc. Maybe the Night and Day (Steel String Remix) though on the B-Sides one. Mofo and Please were only really part of the band during the Pop era. They weren't hits and neither really shows the band's strong suits. Finally, I don't see how you could be able to leave off "SATS" new mix or not. It, along with "Discotheque" were the only real hits off of Pop.

As for ATYCLB, you're right on the money. Those songs would be suited for the next best of (which is why they saved some songs for it). They're only here to help booster sales. Electrical Storm is alright being here. Despite the fact that it isn't from the 90's, bands have done this sort of thing before by making a new song for a Best Of. "Hands" seems to be on the new compilation so that fans won't have to wait for the next Best Of to hear it on a U2 album. It deserves to be on a Best Of anyway though since I'm pretty confident it'll take home the Oscar for Best Song next spring. :yes:

A. I removed Night And Day from Disc 1 because it's a cover song but not because of it's quality which is outstanding. And Night And Day definitely improves Disc 2 !
B. The dilemma of it's vacancy ? How many U2 fans would take Mofo or Who?s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Edit) over SATS ? Who?s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Edit) makes 6 songs from Achtung Baby - 4 songs from Zooropa ? and 4 songs from POP. Even though The First Time does make 5 songs from Zooropa. Yet I would definitely stick with The First Time since it seems predestined to be the perfect complement to October as the closing track / the hidden track role. Both with their stripped down sound and both featuring the piano. The bold and triumphant faith of the 80s versus a questioning and wandering faith of the 90s.
C. I believe Passengers is U2's fourth album of the 90's. I imagine a majority of U2 fans consider it as U2's fourth album of the 90s. It appears so does U2 themselves since they have included Miss Sarajevo on Disc 1 ! I believe the whole name Passengers was simply record company "politics" / the unartistic fear of it not selling 10 million albums. One could even argue for the inclusion of Your Blue Room and Slug on Disc 1. A scenario whereby AB receives 5 songs - Zooropa 4 - POP 4 - Passengers 3 and add HMTMKMKM in the Passengers period. This would be a fairer and a more accurate representation of their 90s work.

I am fully aware that Electrical Storm and Hands are on there to help promote the album and primarily to casual U2 fans and non-fans (the general public) but this project is by and for U2 fans. Therefore - we can and should drop them.

Hidden Track 17. The First Time (3:44)

I would draw out the first disc like so:

1. Until the End of the World (soundtrack mix)
2. Gone (Best Of Mix)
3. Numb (Best Of Mix)
4. Mysterious Ways (The Perfecto Mix)
5. Miss Sarajevo
6. Discoth?que
7. The Fly
8. Your Blue Room
9. Lemon
10. Staring at the Sun
11. Stay (soundtrack mix)
12. The First Time
13. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
14. Please (single version)
15. One

No edits. And again, everything is a single or a live favorite, since this is supposed to over an overview of the decade and not just my personal favorites.

There are some alternate mixes to give the set its own feel (the album version of "Until the End of the World" doesn't make as good an opener) and personal preference (I love the single version of "Please). There's also one dance remix, because the Perfecto Mix of "Mysterious Ways" is just really good and it invokes the extended live performances of the song.

As for omissions, "Even Better Than the Real Thing" was left off because there's just better material from Achtung, Baby. Arguably, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" and "Last Night On Earth" deserve places. And I consider "Your Blue Room" an album track and not a B-side.

The second disc is kind of disappointing to think about because of how badly the band screwed it up in the official release, but I went with:

1. Lady With the Spinning Head (Extended Dance Mix)
2. Slow Dancing
3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun (The Gun Mix)
4. Night and Day
5. Holy Joe (Garage Mix)
6. North and South of the River
7. Can't Help Falling In Love (Triple Peaks Remix)
8. Where Did It All Go Wrong?
9. Fortunate Son
10. Salom?
11. I'm Not Your Baby
12. Pop Muzik (edit)
13. Paint It Black
14. Slow Dancing (with Willie Nelson)
15. Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad
16. Alex Descends Into Hell For A Bottle of Milk
17. Satellite of Love

I really like "Satellite of Love" as the closer. I also liked your idea of "Pop Muzik" for the opener, but I liked U2's idea of "Lady With the Spinning Head" more. :)

I kept both versions of "Slow Dancing" because they're both really good. The other alternates are more straightforward: the Extended Dance Mix of "Lady With the Spinning Head" is preferred because everybody considers it the definitive version of the song, the Triple Peaks Mix of "Can't Help Falling In Love" because that's the only version that has been released as a U2 recording (and I think it's an important song to include because it was so prominent in ZooTV).

The only edit would be the four-minute edit of "Pop Muzik," since the full, eight-minute monster is unlistenable (what were they thinking?!).

Oh, and "The Ground Beneath Her Feet," "Beautiful Day," "Elevation," and the single version of "Walk On" would go on a third compilation, of course.

While i'm not here to write anything too constructive (it'll be tough to resist), i just wanted to say i'm incredibly impressed by your attention to detail on all matters 'tracklisting' U2Soar!! I've got to get a CD-R system myself soon and i'll know where to come for advice and views on constructing ideal CD's. I've gotta go but i will just say that i do think U2/Island/Universal missed another opportunity with this latest Best of release to give us a truly great song package, (i don't know if anyone was employed to come up with track list or whether it was pick-songs-from-a-hat time). Their first Best of wasn't layed out too cleverly, tho i can't detract anything from the songs individually of course.

Anyhow i got to go (running out of change)

PS - The mix of Lemon on the actual B-Sides disc shoulda been the Perfecto not Jeep mix!!!!!!! I think they made an error there IMO...

My version (I'll leave specific tracklisting up in the air).....

* One
* Mysterious Ways
* Until the End of the World

* Lemon
* Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
* Miss Sarajevo
* Discotheque
