The Star Spangled Banner

The National Anthem of the United States of America

This anthem was written by Francis Key as he was being held prisoner on a Royal Navy frigate during the British attack on Fort McHenry in the war of 1812.

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution!
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust":
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And while I'm at it here are some others:

God Save the Queen

The National Anthem of the United Kingdom

This anthem is traditional and possibly one of the most known national anthems in the world. Each verse was written at a different time ranging from the 1740s to the present day.

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

O lord God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their knavish tricks,
Confuse their politics,
On you our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen!

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world ov'er

From every latent foe,
From the assasins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign!
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

English

We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus:
Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
"Mid cannons" roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

BOTSWANA

Fatshe leno la rona,
Ke mpho ya Modimo,
Ke boswa jwa borraetsho;
A le nne ka kagiso.

CHORUS

CHORUS

Re kopaneleng go direla

TRANSLATION

Bless?d be this noble land,

Gift to us from God's strong hand,

Heritage our fathers left to us.

May it always be at peace.

CHORUS

Awake, awake, O men, awake!

And women close beside them stand,

Together we'll work and serve

This land, this happy land!

Word of beauty and of fame,

The name Botswana to us came.

Through our unity and harmony,

We'll remain at peace as one.

CHORUS

Awake, awake, O men, awake!

And women close beside them stand,

Together we'll work and serve

This land, this happy land!

The Soviet National Anthem

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forver to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the stength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labour and valourous deed.

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the stength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

In the vict'ry of Communism's deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the stength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Australia?s National Anthem

"ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR"

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We?ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature?s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history?s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We?ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who?ve come across the seas
We?ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

This is ours...

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts

Johnny, may I add two more songs that we in Britain find more stirring then The National Anthem,some even wish one of these two was the national anthem!

Jerusalem

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark satanic mills.

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O Clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land!

Land Of Hope And Glory

Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned.
God make thee mightier yet!
On Sov'ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Once more thy crown is set.
Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
Have ruled thee well and long;
By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained,
Thine Empire shall be strong.

Land of Hope and Glory,
Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee,
Who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider
Shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty,
Make thee mightier yet.

Thy fame is ancient as the days,
As Ocean large and wide:
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise,
A stern and silent pride:
Not that false joy that dreams content
With what our sires have won;
The blood a hero sire hath spent
Still nerves a hero son.

If you want to hear the greatest version of the USA national anthem, go to audiogalaxy and download Marvin Gaye's interpretation from the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. It will give you chills. He had the voice of an angel.

God Bless all our countries.

FRENCH NAT'L ANTHEM

La Marseillaise
(The Song of Marseilles)
Original French Words
Allons enfants de la patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arriv?!
Contre nous, de la tyrannie
L'?tendard sanglant est lev?
(repeat)
Entendez vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces f?roces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Egorger vos fils, vos compagnes.
CHORUS
Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons!
Marchons! Marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!
Amour sacr? de la patrie,
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs!
Libert?, Libert? ch?rie,
Combats avec les d?fenseurs!
(repeat)
Sous nos drapeaux, que la victoire
Accoure ? tes m?les accents!
Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!
CHORUS

English Translation
Ye sons of France, awake to glory!
Hark! Hark! the people bid you rise
Your children, wives, and grandsires hoary
Behold their tears and hear their cries!
(repeat)
Shall hateful tyrants, mischief breeding,
With hireling hosts a ruffian band
Affright and desolate the land
While peace and liberty lie bleeding?
CHORUS
To arms, to arms, ye brave!
Th'avenging sword unsheathe!
March on, march on, all hearts resolved
On liberty or death.
Oh liberty can man resign thee,
Once having felt thy gen'rous flame?
Can dungeons, bolts, and bar confine thee?
Or whips thy noble spirit tame?
(repeat)
Too long the world has wept bewailing
That falsehood's dagger tyrants wield;
But freedom is our sword and shield
And all their arts are unavailing.
CHORUS

Nicaragua National Anthem

Salve a ti Nicaragua en tu suelo,
Ya no ruge la voz del ca??n
Ni se ti?e con sangre de hermanos
Tu glorioso pend?n bicolor,
Ni se ti?e con sangre de hermanos
Tu glorioso pend?n bicolor.
Brille hermosa la paz en tu cielo,
Nada empa?e tu gloria in mortal
Que el trabajo es tu digno laurel
Y el honor es tu ense?a triunfal,
es tu ense?a triunfal.

In English:

Hail to you, Nicaragua.
The cannon's voice no longer roars,
Nor does the blood of our brothers
Stain your glorious bicoloured flag.
Nor does the blood of our brothers
Stain your glorious bicoloured flag.
Peace shines in beauty in your skies,
Nothing dims your immortal glory,
For work is what earns your laurels
And honour is your triumphal ensign.

NAtional Anthem of Slovenia

Zdravljice
(The Toast)

Prijatli obrodile so trte vince nam sladko,
Ki nam ozivlja zile, srce razjasni in oko,
Ki vtopi vse skrbi, v po trtih prsih up budi,
Ki vtopi vse skrbi v potrtih prsih up,

English Translation
God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitation
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all man free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.
Who long to see
That all man free
No more shall foes, but
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

Any US Citizen over, say 18, who doesnt know the words to the Star Spangled Banner are a pathetic Citizeb at that, I have known this song since I was at least 10, just a reminder at how far our nation has fallen in terms on nationallity and patrioticism.
