Bumper Year For Bono's Band
Dotmusic.com, December 21, 2001

After enjoying one of their most successful years ever, U2 are officially the highest grossing live act in the world this year.

According to figures released by Billboard, Bono, The Edge and co's Elevation Tour topped a list featuring some of the globe's biggest acts after taking $143 million over 113 shows.

Close behind the Irish quartet were rival US boybands 'NSync and Backstreet Boys who played to a combination audience of 3 million taking $90.2 million and $89.8 million respectively. 'NSync's narrow victory came by playing less than half the dates undertaken by the Backstreet Boys with their stadium tour grossing a record breaking $1.9 million per show.

Madonna's sold-out Drowned World tour came in fourth with box office receipts of $74 million from 47 dates closely followed by the Dave Matthews Band who grossed $65 million from 60 dates.

The full list:

1. U2 - $143 million
2. 'NSync - $90 million
3. Backstreet Boys - $89.8 million
4. Madonna - $74 million
5. Dave Matthews Band - $65 million
6. Billy Joel/Elton John - $60 million
7. Eric Clapton - $43.5 million
8. Janet Jackson - $40.6 million
9. Aerosmith - $40 million
10. AC/DC - $28.3 million

I know this wasn't official, but USAtoday said a couple of weeks back that they grossed $160 million with over half of that coming from america.

I do wonder how they did in the US, surely they would still be #1!

They spent 17 million on me-so that's why they only had 143 left.

You know those are really interesting stats. U2 kicked some major ass, especially if you take to mind the fact that ticket prices for tour's like Maddonna's, Billy Joel and Elton John were at the $150+ level!! A very small portion of U2's tickets were priced at $130 the majority being $80 and $45... so our boys covered some major ass ground!!

Huge difference between #1 and #2. The way it should be.

Actually, that's not true at all. They were still touring together in the early new year. I can name at least 2-3 gigs they played in January... (but I see your point)

I thought their days were over.

If you are really good friends with The Edge, you can just call him The~ Adam

The right side of my brain is kinda redundant~ Larry

GM...if you recall the Backdoor Boyz played 5, count'em 5, shows at our beloved FleeceCenter. And top tix prices were around $125.

Sadly, I know-more than U2 played there.

U2: Rock's Unbreakable Heart!

Thats great for them but it really makes me wonder.
Their reasoning behind not coming to Australia is because our dollar is so low. Doesn't look like they are too hard up for cash to me.
I know I do nothing but whine about them blowing us off but it just really gets to me when I see things like that.
Somehow I dont think 4 or 5 little shows out here is going to break the bank.

LOL!

Billy John/ Elton Joel?

But I think it's incredibly cool that there U2 beat the pants off everyone else this year. They definitely deserve rewards for their hard work!
Was that on purpose?

add to that the fact that the goodwill games were staged here because they were looking for a cheap place to stage them
!

I still think U2 wouldn't lose any money when playing a few dates in Australia
