Ok so this is how it works. You get to pick one track from each studio album (+ Under a blood red sky - Anything from their ep's or that bloody passengers nonsense is forbidden, if you can't for the life of you find it within yourself to leave out Your Blue Room/Miss Sarajevo etc, just try bloody harder).

For Clarification one from each of the following albums only.

Boy
October
War
Under a blood red sky
The Unforgettable Fire
The Joshua Tree
Rattle and Hum
Achtung Baby
Zooropa
Pop
All That You Can't Leave Behind
How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

Keep your album in the running order of album releases, so bear that in mind when you make your choices.

Boy-Out of control
October-Gloria
War-New years Day
Under a blood red sky-Sunday Bloody Sunday
The Unforgettable Fire-Bad
The Joshua Tree-Where the streets have no name
Rattle and Hum-God part 2
Achtung Baby-One
Zooropa- Stay
Pop-Wake up dead man
All That You Can't Leave Behind-Walk On
How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb-City of blinding lights

I'm guessing cosider which song on each album shows the most evolution. For example, which song sounded the most unlike anything they'd done before.

Boy - I Will Follow
October - Gloria
War - SBS
TUF - A Sort of Homecoming
TJT - ISHFWILF
R&H - God Part II
AB - The Fly
Zoo - Numb
Pop - Discotheque
ATYCLB - SIAMYCGOO
HTDAAB - AMAAW

(Doesn't Under a Blood Redy Sky count as an EP? If we get that one, we should get Wide Awake in America.)

Boy - Out of Control
October - Gloria
War - Two Hearts Beat As One
Under a Blood Red Sky - New Year's Day
The Unforgettable Fire - Bad
The Joshua Tree - Where the Streets Have No Name
Rattle and Hum - All I Want Is You
Achtung Baby - One
Zooropa - Zooropa
Pop - Gone
All That You Can't Leave Behind - Walk On
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - Miracle Drug

I think you mean we pick our favourites?

Out of control
October
Sunday bloody sunday
The unforgettable fire
Running to stand still
Desire
The fly
Zooropa
Discotheque
Kite
Love and peace or else

Including Under a Blood Red Sky and not Wide Awake in America is a cop-out.

Not so much picking all your favoruites songs as picking the songs which collectively make the best album, reflecting U2 as a whole.

I will Follow
Gloria
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Electric Co
(Pride) In The Name of Love
Bullet the Blue Sky
All I Want is You
Until the End of The World
Lemon
Do You Feel Loved
Beautiful Day
Fast Cars

Boy-I will follow
October-Gloria
War-New Years Day
Under a Blood Red Sky-11 O'Clock Tick Tock
The Unforgettable Fire-The Unforgettable Fire

Rattle and Hum-All I Want is You
Achtung Baby-The Fly
Zooropa-Zooropa
Pop-Mofo
All That You Can't Leave Behind-Walk ON
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb-City of Blinding Lights.

How about which song on each album could actually fit on the next one, to make the "least evolved" album?

I'll start with War and skip Passengers and Rattle & Hum.

New Year's Day (could be on Unforgettable)
MLK (could be on Joshua Tree)
Exit (could be on Achtung)
Ultraviolet (could be on Zooropa)
either Babyface or Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car (could easily be on Pop)
If You Wear that Velvet Dress (could be on ATYCLB)
Walk On (could be on HTDAAB)

Hahaha! That is TERRIBLE. How miserably out of place would that song sound on The Unforgettable Fire?!

An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart
I Fall Down
Drowning Man
11 O'Clock Tick Tock
A Sort Of Homecoming
Love Comest Tumbling
Red Hill Mining Town
Heartland
Ultra Violet
The First Time
Gone
New York
City Of Blinding Lights

Why? I was gonna go for Seconds, but the very heavy production on New Year's Day reminds me of stuff off the next one. I guess it's not quite Eno style though. Now that I think about it, Drowning Man is probably the best choice.

Ok I modified it slightly after a couple of listens

Replacing Lemon with Stay

And then I created the B Version, which is just as good if not better.

October
New Years Day
11 O Clock Tick Tock
The Unforgettable Fire
Where The Streets Have No Name
Desire

Lemon
Elevation
Discotheque
City of Blinding Lights

And a C side, just to confirm I am completley bored.

Out of Control

Party Girl
Bad
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Angel Of Harlem
Even Better Than The Real Thing
Dirty Day
Please
Walk On

Oops, I completely misunderstood the point of this thread, and since it's too late to edit my post, you'll just have to ignore it.

Drowning Man
Bad
Bullet The Blue Sky
God Part II
The Fly

Love And Peace Or Else

Not neccessarily the best songs, but the ones that best show the evolution of U2's music.

And, to the original poster: Don't ever call Passengers nonsense. It is brilliant.
