Finals: U2 Singles Survivor - Round Eleven

is now open. Please vote by clicking in the circle next to the single you like the LEAST on the electronic poll above. Thank you.

Please be aware that you are voting on the WHOLE single release, not the individual a-side. In the same way that album survivor involved whole albums with their full complement of tracks competing against each other, singles survivor will involve whole singles with their full complement of tracks competing against each other.

This is a TWO day timed electronic poll.

Instructions:

Voting

Each round please vote off the single you like the least. The single with the most amount of votes is the the least popular for this round. Voting is anonymous. It's not compulsory to state your preference in the thread.

Next round all the singles are listed again, minus the single that receives the most amount of votes this round. And again please vote for your least favourite single from the selection.

And on we go for many rounds until there's only two singles left. In the last round you vote for your favourite out of the two. The last single standing is the most popular (or the least unpopular depending on how you look at it).

Tie Breaker

In the event of a tie, both or all tied singles will be instantly eliminated from the competition.

Have fun!

:bump:

Repeat after me: I will never vote off The Unforgettable Fire.

Meh, whilst this is a fun little excercise. It's not exactly designed to find the best single, its merely going to come up with the least objectionable single.

There is no question that 11 OClock tick tock has more die hard supporters than Even Better (which still remains on 0 votes at this point), but no one has lead the rush on yet.

People basically nominate a particular single to go after (we generally have 2-3 each vote, generally early 80's vs 2000's) and they just take each other out. 11 OClock was the whipping boy for a while, and now its UF... the writings on the wall, it lasted Vertigo, ES... might get passed Sometimes... but id say itll get pipped off reasonably soon. The nature of the comp has been once you get 5+ votes and pop up on the radar you will be killed off eventually.

That IMO explains why certain singles get a flood of votes, people merely attempt to pick off singles which they for some reason or another object to. It happened to 11 O'Clock, Stuck and itll happen to UF, SYCMIOYO and itll certinally happen to PopHeart.

This for some reason reminded me of Jon Stewarts metaphor for the US Electoral system:

You are going to see what is the favourite Ice Cream flavour at your school. You divide the 550 students at your school into 50 random allotments. For each group you allot points based on the amount of students in each group. Then ask each individual to vote for their favourite ice cream. Explain to them that their vote does not necceserially mean that they are voting for that particular ice cream, rather that the ice cream with the highest amount of votes in their random allotment will get their group's points, while the others will get nothing. The ice cream with the highest amount of group points wins.

But as I said... this is a damn fun exercise... I will hold my vote at this point.

Those are some good points..........we really are truly finding "the least objectionable singles" rather than the favorite ones......."11 O'Clock" would easily make it into an overall top ten list for us, but there's enough haters to kick it out a bit earlier.........we're really going to end up with the one single that the majority thought wasn't deserving of getting booted earlier, rather than the single that truly is the favorite here......

But yeah, vote for "Sometimes", everyone.

Everything seems good so far....

The next two rounds make me nervous. Hopefully we'll move on to kick out Desire, but then where? 11OTT only got kicked out because those of us who like it spread our votes too thinly and there was no co-ordinated campaign to save it.

As a comparison, Popheart came extremely close to being voted out. I think it has had the second-most amount of votes in a number of rounds. However, since then the impetus to vote for Popheart has worn off and it is still hanging around with a consistently low number of votes per round.

Perhaps those of us who want to save The Unforgettable Fire should band together to vote off Popheart and Desire...?

I'll go for that. Heck, we could even make a hitlist of other singles and modify it accordingly as voting patterns alter so that we can offer a unified amount of votes to make sure U2's best single progresses as far as possible. I don't expect UF to make it past the top five but it SHOULD make it that far. It does have the most original b-sides out of any single there.

Singles like EBTTRT, IGWSHA, and SATS have also been consistently receiving a small number of votes for many rounds now, and a few people have started to vote for U2:3 and Beautiful Day of late. I Will Follow wasn't receiving many votes at all until someone pointed out that it was slipping under the radar and a few rounds later, the movement to kick it out built so much momentum that it was gone. I think a similar movement to KEEP UF could work.
