U2 to perform live during E*Trade Super Bowl XXXVI Halftime Show
NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES (Dec. 2, 2001) -- The band U2 will perform at the
Super Bowl in New Orleans during the E*TRADE SUPER BOWL XXXVI HALFTIME
SHOW, the NFL announced.

Slated this year for Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002 at the Louisiana Superdome, the
Super Bowl is annually the nation's highest- rated TV program and the
most-watched single-day sporting event. This year's game will be televised
live on FOX to an expected 130 million viewers in the United States and 800
million viewers worldwide. U2 is at the height of their career - their
multi-platinum CD ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND is both a critical and
commercial success. Upon its release, it debuted at #1 in 32 countries
around the globe and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. U2 is
currently wrapping up their 2001 Elevation Tour, which included more than
100 sold-out shows around the globe and received accolades from fans and
press alike. Entertainment Weekly concluded that U2's show was "a
staggering confirmation that this is rock's greatest arena band, ever."
Additionally, U2 has been chosen as "Band of the Year" by Spin magazine the
same honor bestowed on them by Rolling Stone earlier this year. Over the
course of their 20-plus year career, the Irish rock band has released 14
albums, with sales exceeding 100 million. They have won 10 Grammy Awards,
having received three of those in 2001 for ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE
BEHIND's first single "Beautiful Day" which was named "Record of the Year."
"The E*TRADE Super Bowl Halftime Show is an important part of the Super
Bowl and one of the most widely viewed entertainment events of the year,"
said NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "This year's show will take on new
meaning in light of recent world events. We are pleased that the
spectacular talent of U2 will become part of our Super Bowl halftime
tradition." "U2 is absolutely one of the coolest and creative contemporary
bands in the world, and none enjoy greater worldwide appeal," said FOX
Sports Chairman David Hill. "It is a privilege to broadcast our third Super
Bowl, and I'm sure that U2 will provide our global audience with a
championship caliber performance." The E*TRADE SUPER BOWL XXXVI HALFTIME
