Lemon

Lemon, see through in the sunlight
She wore lemon but never in the daylight
She’s gonna make you cry
She’s gonna make you whisper and moan
When you’re dry she draws her water from the stone

And I feel like I’m slowly, slowly, slowly slipping under
And I feel like I’m holding onto nothing

She wore lemon to colour in the cold, grey night
She had heaven and she held on so tight

A man makes a picture, a moving picture
Through light projected he can see himself up close
A man captures colour, a man likes to stare
He turns his money into light to look for her

And I feel like I’m drifting, drifting, drifting from the shore
And I feel like I’m swimming out to her

Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins

Lemon, see through in the sunlight
A man builds a city with banks and cathedrals
A man melts the sands so he can see the world outside
You’re gonna meet her there
A man makes a car
She’s your destination
And builds a road to run them on
You gotta get to her
A man dreams of leaving
She’s imagination
But he always stays behind

And these are the days when our work has come asunder
And these are the days when we look for something other

Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins
Midnight is where the day begins

A man makes a picture, a moving picture
Through light projected he can see himself up close
You’re gonna meet her there
A man captures colour
She’s your destination
A man likes to stare
There’s no sleeping there
He turns his money into light to look for her
She’s imagination
Lemon
She is the dreamer, she’s imagination
She had heaven
Through the light projected he can see himself up close
She wore lemon

It took me a while to get into this song, but now I totally dig it. It's one of the centerpieces of Zooropa. Very personal too, with the lyrics about Bono's mother (some time before recording this song, colour video footage was found of Bono's parents. In it, his mother was wearing a lemon-coloured dress.).
I didn't think it translated that well to a live setting, but as a studio track it's excellent!
At 6:59 it's also U2's longest song (yes, even though An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart are inseperable and are also indexed together on many issues of the Boy CD, they are 2 songs).

C ya!

when I first heard the song it surprised me ( in a positive way). It wasn't like anything I'd heard before. seems to be stuck in my head lately :yikes:

i didn't know what to make of this song the first time i listened to it because it was so radically different from anything they'd ever done before. i was pretty sure i hated it, but i kept listening anyway. and, as always, the lyrics won me over.

it's now one of my favourite u2 songs.

'midnight is where the day begins'

yay! i LOVE this song!!!!

it is in my top ten of U2 songs...maybe even in my top ten of favorite songs by any artist!

it doesn't sound much like anything else that U2 has done.
it sounds so dreamy and surreal. guitar use is different...not your typical edge-like solo...but more minimal and intentional. and is it piano or synthesizer they use? and bono's falsetto and the backing vocals... it's very "otherworldly". i love it.

My second favourite U2 song. Absolute genius. 7 minutes of pure GOD in music form! Lyrics are amazing, the music is amazing, and each bit fits together perfectly.

It's sheer brilliance and so poignant and sad. The video makes me laugh and feel sad at the same time. I love the 'midnight is where the day begins' line. Actually I said this all in my Lemon appreciation thread which has gone walkabout...

Awesome song that took a while to grow on me as well. Now, I really appreciate it's originality and quality much more than before. Also, I love it when Bono sings it as MacPhisto at ZooTV Sydney right after "Show Me the Way To Go Home". His prancing around on stage to this otherworldly song is just so cool!
