See the sun rise over her skin
Don't change it
See the sun rise over her skin
Dawn changes everything
Everything
And the delta sun
Burns bright and violet

Mississippi and the cotton wool heat
Sixty-six a highway speaks
Of deserts dry
Of cool green valleys
Gold and silver veins
Of the shining cities

In this heartland
In this heartland soil
In this heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland
Heartland...heartland

See the sun rise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand
Freeway like a river cuts through this land
Into the side of love
Like a burning spear
And the poison rain
Brings a flood of fear
Through the ghost-ranch hills
Death valley waters
In the towers of steel
Belief goes on and on

In this heartland
In this heartland soil
In this heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland
Heartland...heaven knows this is a heartland
Heartland...heartland
Heartland...heaven's day here in the heartland
Heart...

The most underrated U2 song of all time. Simply gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I think it may share that title with a very few other songs but its definitely tied for first with maybe Tomorrow and something else I can't think of right now.

PS- Oh! I thought of it! Hawkmoon. How can two underrated songs be on one album?

this song is pure poetry. stuck at the back of the album, it slipped by me relatively unnoticed for years. one of my absolute favourites.

i get shivers just reading those lyrics.

I sometimes wish this one stayed on Joshua Tree and that Trip through your wires would end up on Rattle and Hum.

One of their most beautiful songs.

IT's About Time!!

Definitely the best song on Rattle and Hum, Heartland is a mode of transportation to a very beautiful place for me.

Favorite R&H song. Wonderfully atmospheric, with tremendous backing vocals.

Definitely!

A moving tribute of Bono's love for America. The vivid lyrics accurately depict this great country. Oh, and those falsetto choruses really make this song stand out in Rattle & Hum. If All I Want is You was not present, this would take my top vote.

I've told this story a million times on Interference, I think...
When I was under deadline pressure right after the release of R&H, I used to play "Heartland" to get me through long sleepless nights of writing. It gave me the strength to keep working.

I will always be grateful to U2 for that.

One of the most beautiful songs they've ever done, and it's a damn shame it's buried on R&H.

But I probably won't listen to it again for at least a week. HTDAAB is so satisfying, I haven't reached for any other U2 yet.

I haven't heard Heartland or Hawkmoon in ages. Lost in a computer crash earlier this year. Didn't have Hawkmoon on anything else. I really miss them. Lost alot in that crash. :(
(except for the R&H version of Heartland, of course. still have that at least)
Could really get into those now and again and again.....

The greatest song from the worst album.
Shouldve been a single
Shouldve been played Live
Shouldve been on The Joshua Tree
Backing vocals are awesome

One of the best songs off Rattle & Hum, a true gem. Beautiful lyrics by Bono and what vocals!!
