Song of the day 08/20: Babyface

1. Listen to the song
2. Read the lyrics
3. Post your thoughts

Watching your bright blue eyes
In the freeze frame
I've seen them so many times
I feel like I must be your best friend
You're looking fine, so fine, oh my
Dressed up like a lovely day, oh

Babyface, babyface
Slow down child, let me untie your lace
Babyface, babyface
Cover girl with natural grace
How could beauty be so kind
To an ordinary guy

Coming home late at night
To turn you on
Checking out every frame
I've got slow motion on my side
Turning around and around
With the sound and colour
Under my control, go
Round and around, going down
Dressed up like a lovely day

Babyface, babyface
Tin foil hair all tied up in lace
Babyface, babyface
Bitter sweet girl won't you give me a taste
How could beauty be so kind
To an ordinary guy

Do do do do do do do do do...do do...
Do do do do do do do do do...do do...

Babyface, babyface
Slow down child, let me untie your lace
Babyface, babyface
Open the door, let me unpack my case
Babyface, babyface
You're everywhere child
You're all over the place
Babyface, babyface
You're coming to me from outer-space
How could beauty be so kind
To an ordinary guy

One of the best songs from Zooropa.

One of U2's most underrated songs.

Some say an ode to masturbation.

Cheers,

J

I really dig Babyface. Great bass n' drum song. Adam does some nice work moving up the board on this one. I love it when Bono sings "I gots no more, she's by my side" Something like that. But Babyface is a underated U2 song.

One of few U2 songs i really don't like. Can't put my finger exactly on why though.

My least favorite from Zooropa. But, live version from London 1993 is actually very good.

i love this song! i can't pit Zooropa songs against each other, i just love all of them so damn much. i love the toy piano at the beginning!

one of my fav songs off zooropa it was a bittersweet sound to it and bono's do do do's sound sarcastic- half hearted.
this song works for me cus it plays out for me that you have a guy- an ordinary guy- who's falling for a girl or already in love who probably doesnt deserve to feel this way or deserve to even be in her presence. at the same time this guy is wanting and getting what he wants out of her.

this leads me to the idea that, how 'lemon' was influenced by the old film footage of his mom, so was 'babyface' influenced by television/media/cable. the lines "You're coming to me from outer-space"- satellite cable feeds;

"Coming home late at night
To turn you on" - late night adult programming:ohmy:

"Under my control, go Round and around, going down"- someone with control in hand having the ability to watch whatever they please, literally in control of the viewer

"How could beauty be so kind To an ordinary guy"- the idea that you have this bombshell who's off doin god knows what to joe blow. how'd he get that job? lucky him.

another interpretation of the song could be his relationship with ali. spending so much time away on the road and finally comin home to her, seeing her face when he returns, and how fortunate he may feel.

there was similar conversation in "it's a musical journey" forum about "until the end of the world" and its double meanings. makes you choose if the lyrics have sexual/religious undertones. babyface falls into that category. some great lines in this song. bittersweet love song that borders on infatuation and impossiblity/ficticious love.

I LOVE Babyface! My favorite song from Zooropa and in my top 10 U2 songs. I dont know what it is about it, whether its the lyrics, music, Bono's voice......but something clicks with me. Awesome song.

Good song about porn. But not great, its a catchy tune which I listen to it once in awhile but I tend to skip over it. I like the music though, bass and drums.

It's an INCREDIBLE pop song.....one of the highlights of Zooropa. I could never tire of it.

My second to third favorite song from Zooropa, after Stay and First time.

I always heard "Coming home late at night to turn you over".

I see it about a regular guy obsessed/infatuated with this super beautiful woman (celebrity? model?) that he knows he can not and won't get - she's out of his league - literally and figuratively speaking. Still, he feels lucky just because of her existance/presence "how could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy?".
