i can see where 'so cruel' could be considered the 'heart' of the album. i see that album as a story, with lots and lots of fallout from the desintegration of a relationship. each of the songs describes a bit of the fallout ('the fly' = debauchery and temptation, 'acrobat' = anger and frustration, etc...). i can see 'so cruel' as the one song on the album not about the fallout, but directly about the unravelling relationship. this song depicts the argument, and everything spins out from that focus...

You're entitled to your wrong opinion! (just kidding!) I like the song personally.

It's very poetic and I think it fits great in the middle of AB.
Not the worst by any means. |

i Disagree.. the song is beautiful!! the only part i do not like is the "they pass through you like a ghost"part its really cheesy but i just cringe at that part and enjoy the beauty of the rest of the song!

You're kidding about the lyrics, right? "Between the horses of love and lust we are trampled underfoot' is one of the greatest lyrics Bono has ever written. It's a gorgeous song.

It's brilliant in every regard. The lyrics are dark and beautifully poetic and the music builds to a subtle yet powerful climax. Check Edge's guitar as the song progresses. Anyone who says this song is the worst on the album has been huffing Windex. Try "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" for that dubious honor. That song's a mess.

So Cruel is an amazing song. One of U2's most dark, bitter, depressing songs. Beautiful lyrics: "Between the horses of love and lust/We are trampled underfoot" ranks up there with the best lines ever.

I never thought I'd see the day where Miss Becky is arguing for an Achtung Baby era song.

So Cruel = A song of great beauty & lyrical depth - simple as that.
Achtung Baby wouldn't be the same without it & it brillantly contrasts with the full on guitar work from the edge on The Fly, which follows. New Years Day is the worst U2 song ever - U2 at their po-faced hectoring worst. ps - sorry to all NYD fans. |

Blahblahblah.
It's a subpar song on a pretty good album. However, I wouldn't say that it's the band's WORST song. |

I can't believe some of you are hearing the same song I'm hearing. Did you get a defective copy of AB or something? I still remember hearing it for the first time and thinking those were some of the best lyrics Bono ever wrote.

What sticks out for me in a good song is the melody, not the lyrics. I'll remember a catching melody long after I've forgotten the lyrics. That's why I dislike So Cruel so much- no hook, no real build-up, etc. Just my opinion! |
