Has anyone noticed the amount of slide guitars in the new album? Let's count the songs that have a slide guitar:

1. Miracle Drug : probably the most obvious slide guitar solo.
2. SYCMIOYO: the bridge
3. COBL: I didn't notice until Edge played live in the Brooklyn Bridge show. He uses the most for this song.
4. One Step Closer: The intro

4 songs, have slide guitar. That's more than any other u2 album that I can think of.

I think maybe he fell in love with the slide again during "Kite". The slide in that song makes it that much more powerful. And I'm really liking his use of the slide on HTDAAB. Just wish I could get my hands on that modified slide of his. There's nothing worse than quickly trying to get the slide on and off your finger when you're playing live, and he seems to have solved that problem.

actually the main reason for all the slide work is that Edge has a new specialist slide.

Instead of the full finger one, which doesn't allow you to fret with the slide finger, Edge is using a mini-slide sort of like a very thick ring, which allows him to fret as it doesn't cover the full finger. It saves him from having to switch over to the slide (like in Bullet, Mysterious Ways and Even Better than the real thing) so it's like a completely new instrument for him.

Are you sure about this? In the Brooklyn bridge dvd, Edge can be seen putting a regular slide on during Miracle drug. He plays the whole song without a slide until the solo, you can see him putting it on right before the solo.
I've never heard of this new slide that you speak of. I would like to try it if it exists. What is it called?

in one of the interviews over the past several months edge implies that it was customly fabricated. i believe he used on somtimes for the snl performance.

turns out 'customly' isn't a word...but you get my point. :sexywink:

It's actually a tiny slide that fits on his fingertip. If you look closely at the video of "Sometimes" on SNL, you can see how small it is. It seemingly also doesn't impede him from playing chords too. Interesting.

I am so sick of putting on and removing my slide, though the trick is to just have it in the palm of your picking hand.

you can get those "half" slides that fit aroud the very bottom part of your middle finger, so you can still bend the finger and play chords and such.

And I too was really surprised at the slide gutiar in COBL at the Brooklyn show. great stuff, sounds amazing.

The slide use in COBL is

I know, didn't that just take that song up a few notches?!?! I hope they release an official live version of COBL as a b-side sometime.

I almost started this post actually, regarding all the slide work on hut dab. It's definitely that specialty slide that is like a thimble.

I HATE the slide in 'One Step Closer'...during the chorus, you just hear a bit of it and it sounds SHIT! Like some crappy COUNTRY ballad! Pile of rubbish! Ruined an already nose-diving song...! :madspit:

The opposite of everything you just said.
I am sick of blatant ignorance.

How was he being blatantly ignorant? He said the song was bad, and the slide made it worse...! oooh crap, what an ignorant boy!

Exactly what I was thinking...! I wish people would type song/record names PROPERLY...otherwise you end up calling an entire bloody thread 'HUT DAB'...!!

Hey, go easy on hut dab!!! It's the cool way of typing HTDAAB. It looks more natural and easy on the eyes.

are you sure you're not referring to the pedal steel?

On a somewhat unrelated note, I haven't seen the DVD or any of the live performances. Being a freak, I'm always interested in which songs Bono plays guitar on as well. Has he played any for SYCMIOYO? In the past he usually did for slower, ballady numbers.

Nope, not for SYCMIOYO. He has played a guitar for OotS.

Booklet says Daniel Lanois on pedal steel (you can also hear it on Ground beneath her feet), so I guess Edge is not playing the slide on that one.
