Just reading the setlist from Last nights MSG show in New York
It noted that Bono sang the snippet Shine like stars to the end of With Or Without You.

I had never thought of this as a snippet more like additional lyrics Bono added to the song now and again.

Is it from another song?

If so who is it by? and what is it called?

Anybody know?

The song never seems complete without it!

The same with the "I hear you knocking" that he sings at the end of One.

WOWY was amazing last night, that was my fifth vertigo show and the first time I heard WOWY so I loved it anyway.

The whole crowd was loving it and the "Shine like stars" at the end just topped it off.

Edge's guitar

Similar to that historical "it's your ASS" from I will Follow, right aard?
Those were also self made up lyrics..............

What a thread that was. Perhaps my best?:hmm:

I wish I had the power to find it again, and give it the 2nd coming it so richly deserves:sad:

I did some searching for the 'Shine Like Stars' verse and came across this ...

WOWY lyrics as interpreted by 'Via voice recognition software'

With Or Without You

Cedar stench set E-mail eyes
C4 Stores Christine Northside
I'd weigh Ted for you

Sight of hand and wrist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes Newsnight
And I weight without tunes
With or without tunes
With all without tunes

See the Stalin we received the Shell
You'd give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting four-year
We will Orwell you
With or without too
Armagh I can't live With or without
Tim With or without Tim

And you give yourself a weigh
And you give yourself a weigh
And you give
And you dive
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body brood
Puberty with nothing to win and Nothing left to lose
And you give yourself away
And UTRs yourself away
And you give
And is Keith
and UTRs yourself away

With or without tunes
With or without tunes
Armagh I can't leave With or without Tim
With or melted
With all without you'd
I can't live With all won't you
With or without cheese
Yeah Ewe

We'll shine like stars
Increase some old knight
We'll Stein like stars
Enter winter night
One part
One side
One love
We've all with outdo
With Orwell cheese
Armagh
I can't live With or without cheese

See Rattle&Hum for definitive example of the 'third verse' aka shine like stars....

heh, we gave him a piece of paper with those lyrics at Boston Oct 4 as a subtle hint, when he arrived for soundcheck and came out for some pics and autographs...

looks like he got the message loud and clear :combust:

Thanks for the replies

Like I say I always thought of them as Bono's lyrics.
To see them quoted as a snippet was a surprise.

To clarify, they ARE Bono's lyrics but we note them on U2-Vertigo-Tour.com because the verse isn't always sung and we don't have a method of noting "extra verse sung" so classifying it as a snippet is the next best thing.

I've debated this inclusion for a while in my mind and for the moment I've decided to retain the current notation.

It should be. I think every time it's added on, the performance is even better. Every audio I've heard or video I've seen with this extra verse kicks ass.

I think the song isn't complete without Shine Like Stars. As far as I'm concerned, U2 shouldn't even bother playing WOWY if Bono's not going to sing that verse.

WOWY --> Edge's solo --> Shine Like Stars --> Love Will Tear Us Apart snippet = perfect.

Anyone not like the line?!

It seems really corny and out of place to me,

I mean WOWY's full of really dark, heavy lines,

'Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait.'

'My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose.'

'We'll shine like stars in the summer night.' just doesn't fit imo!

Nope. I love that snippet, addendum, whatever you want to call it. As for the "dark, heavy lines" --they aren't compromised when Bono includes the snippet from Love Will Tear Us Apart right after the "shine like stars" verse. It ends on a rather moving but fatalistic note.

Yeah, I think it's one of the lamest couplets in Bono's career. It never ceases to amaze me how people make such a big deal about rhyming "summer night" with "winter light". It's like what a 3rd grader would write as his first poem. Can you get any more cliche than "shining like stars"?

"One heart, one hope, one love"? Give me a fucking break. What the fuck does that have to do with the rest of the lyrics? It my opinion, all of it weakens the actual song's dark poetry, which is well done.

The real extra verse that ALWAYS improves the song is the "hear me comin' love" with One, because it actually fits the original lyrics, and it's sung with such emotion.

I don't think anyone said they liked it for the rhyming... And it's not like there are that many forms of "complex" rhyming or anything. Unless you've found the rhyme for orange.

I was trying to listen to this version last night, and I can't find a single one of my boots that has it.

I was sure I had at least one.
The December 30th, 1989 show has it (and surely you have that, if only for the definitive U2 performance of "She's A Mystery To Me").

(Edit: The 26th has it too, and Axver's always going on about that one for some reason, so better check that out too.)

I'll not mention the 26th, Ax will though, I'll just say it contains the answer to all of lifes problems and kicks ass as well:wink:

I believe that something is some song called "One Tree Hill"....or something like that.

When U2 played the "shine like stars" verse on the Vertigo tour, do they do it like Rattle and Hum, where he goes back to "with or without you..." at the end, or like Slane, where it just ends after "one heart"?? I've always prefered the Rattle and Hum way of doing it.

As long as we're on the topic of added lyrics...were the "hear me coming, Lord" lines from "One" written while on tour or something? Or are there any studio demos around with the those lines included? Cos that would just be
