the rings appeared as a possible item in the first article in this post (maybe the rings are in exhibition in Santiago, actually). Still, I haven't any pic of this exhibition. I think we have a friend here from Chile. I asked to bring us some news. I'm trying too, any pic of this exhibition in Santiago. I hope post anything here, soon.

so... I went... last week

not a lot of stuff, but I won't complain, it cost me like 4 dollars

Here's what I remember

-EDGE's Gibson Explorer.... it's a beauty, and MUSIC RISING t-shirt

-BONO's Black Gretsch... the one he used in 2004 (I think) for Pavarotti and Friends (where he sang One, Ave Maria and other one)

-JIMI HENDRIX's original Wah-Wah pedal, some photos and autograph

- BOB DYLAN's signed harmonica, music sheets for "Masters of War", and a hand written setlist for a concert, tickets for a 65 concert

-ELVIS' hat, tickets to his suspended show the day he died, a bottle of prescription pills, and pictures

-JANIS JOPLIN's hand written letter to an ex boyfriend (3 pages)

-FRANK SINATRA's withdraw contract from Columbia Records in 1955

-NIRVANA's "Smell like teen spirit" MTV Award, and a funny magazine interview where Kurt says he hates giving autographs... that's autographed

-some VELVET REVOLVER signed drumsticks

-BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's NHL Rangers shirt (really, the useless thing in the whole exhibit)

-SANTANA's 60's concert jacket

-STEVIE NICK's "robe" she wore on stage

-there was a U2 only part, with:

--the U2 rings
--autographed TIME Person of the Year magazine (Bono & the Gates). Bono doodles some glasses over the photo
--ZOO Money
--a pair of EDGE's custom made Converse shoes
--a really cool B&W Edge photo in the Vertigo Tour (outdoor)
--a Bono picture, but I don't remember that much of it
--a Mysterious Ways record, framed, and the cover signed by all four, plus a plate that says "U2, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton LAST NAME, Larry "Mullin" Jr. (yes, Adam's mother last name appears"

- then a whole BEATLES exhibit, with:

--4 custom made grey suits
--a type machine letter from John to someone, talking about Yoko and their son
--a JOHN "self-portrait" and signature
--a lot of pictures, tickets, contracts and things like that

really, it was great.. no as great as the one you'll get over there, I'm sure, but it was nice... just to see the EXPLORER live right in front of me was great enough...

go see it, you won't regret it

Icons of Music Auction II to Benefit Music Rising on Saturday May 31, 2008 to be Held at Hard Rock Cafe New York

Thursday April 24, 9:00 am ET
Unprecedented Collection of Music Memorabilia to be Offered in a Live and Televised Auction Event
Hosted by U2's the Edge With Special Performance by Aaron Neville

NEW YORK, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- U2's the Edge announced the Icons of Music Sale II to benefit Music Rising to be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Hard Rock Cafe New York in Times Square. This second annual auction event, hosted by Julien's Auctions (http://www.juliensauctions.com), will offer one of the most significant collections of music memorabilia from many of music's greatest legends with proceeds benefiting Music Rising (http://www.musicrising.org), a campaign co-founded by U2's the Edge, legendary producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz in 2005 to aid musicians of the Gulf Coast Region in regaining their livelihood after the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Four-time Grammy Award winner Aaron Neville, who has joined the Music Rising campaign and helped bring major attention to some of the charity work being done in New Orleans today, will appear at the Icons of Music Sale II and perform at the evening session. Neville, who with his family, lost everything in the storms of Katrina brings a unique personal experience to Music Rising and will give guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness his great musicianship when he brings the spirit of New Orleans to the auction.

The ongoing efforts of Music Rising have, thus far, aided over 2,700 professional musicians and nearly 50,000 students and parishioners. The charity has been the recipient of numerous awards since its inception including the HALO 2005 Award for Cause Marketing, the 2006 Billboard Humanitarian Award and the 2007 PRSA PRISM Award. After the campaign received a Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund grant, former President Bill Clinton personally presented a Music Rising Gibson Les Paul guitar to a recipient in Baton Rouge as a symbol of Music Rising's dedication to the region.

"No one could ever come close to repaying the debt to those who have established this form of music that we all take totally for granted, this hybrid of European melody and African-American rhythm that's given us jazz and R&B and rock 'n' roll," said the Edge. "There's something powerful about musicians giving instruments they own to an auction to aid musicians who are going through a particularly difficult time."

"When the hurricanes first hit we knew we had to do something to help preserve the musical heritage of the Gulf Coast Region," said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar. "We've been honored to work alongside some of the world's greatest musical talents in our efforts to rebuild the Gulf Coast Region and to understand the needs of the people who were devastated by the hurricanes. This auction serves as a reminder of much work that still needs to be done in bringing back one of the world's greatest regions."

Bob Ezrin, legendary producer and one of the co-founders of the organization added, "It is amazing to us that even after all this time there is still so much need for support in the Central Gulf -- and so many schools, churches and community organizations are just now coming on line again. Music Rising will be here to provide the instruments and support they need until that need no longer exists, however long it takes."

Amongst the donations from the Edge:

 it's incredible the commitment of Edge in this his cause. Oh my God, the Gibson Explorer !!!????@@@@@ My reverence for his generosity ...

He says at the opening Music Rising-flash-site:

'I can't imagine what it must be like to wake up one morning and to not have my guitar ... '

He gives from himself to the others.
If I could I would like to buy this guitar in this auction and give it back to Edge ...

this man is awesome.
Thanks God, cause Edge exists!

Okay...looking at the pics, it doesn't look like it's the ORIGINAL Explorer. There's no dent in it. And the hardware doesn't look gold.

Edge has two explorers, the original and a backup. i know this for a fact because at one show i saw edge play one, and then dallas bring another one out and swap them over.

methinks this is the backup

Yes he probably has more than 1 (as confirmed by quadcaster), and the one he donated is also one he's used often, as we can see him using it in that pic.

yer its definetly one of his that he has used heaps, but i duno if its his legendary 76 that he's had throughout U2's career, or the backup that he obviously picked up years later.

It could be the backup considering i wouldnt think that he'd sell his actual one.

Then again, it could be THE explorer, considering he sold THE les paul custom as opposed to the backup last time round.....

it really would be a shame if he sells the original

:hmm: Anyone know what that pic of Edge is from? That's the same guitar that was donated so it would be interesting to know what it's being used for there.

FYI

update from atu2.com

its a copy folks! not real thing...

see article below:

UPDATE: OMG! HE'S GIVING AWAY THE EXPLORER -- NOT!

Update: Although the official news release clearly states this guitar
is Edge's "early stage played 1976 Gibson Explorer Guitar," our good
friend Beth did some research and discovered it's actually a copy made
in 2000, not the original. Here's the proof.

You don't think the auction organizers are fibbing, do you?

yeah its definitely not the original... There is no way he would give that up...

I breathed a sigh of relief just now. I wouldn't want him to give that up. It's the holy grail of Edge guitars.
