i'm pretty sure the first time was in modena italy with at the pavarotti and friends concert about a month or two before the special olympics.

I just checked the date for the Special Olympics and it was June 2003, not April - so you are right after all.
The April date I ran across was an announcement that they would be in the Special Olympics in June.
