WELCOME TO THE SOUL / KNEEL / KNEES PARTY!!!

Let's kick this off with the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind, shall we...?

Elevation
Eclipse, you elevate my soul
I've got no self-control

IALW
Friday night running
To Sunday on my knees

Wild Honey
What is soul?
Love me, give me soul

WILATW
People find all kinds of things
That bring them to their knees

Now let's move on to their 2004 smash hit grammy winning album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb!

Vertigo
And though your soul
It can't be bought
Your mind can wander

Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel, kneeeeeeeel

Sometimes
We fight all the time
You and I... that's alright
We're the same soul

LAPOE
I don't know if I can take it
I'm not easy on my knees

COBL
Blessings not just for the ones who kneel.... luckily

This next one's truly astonishing! :|
AMAAW
The soul needs beauty for a soul mate
When the soul wants... the soul waits...

Crumbs
You had so much to offer
Why did you offer your soul?

OOTS
Sugar come on, show your soul

I kneel 'cos I want you some more

Yahweh
Take this soul stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul and make it sing

And there you have it! Wake up and smell the coffee people! They've started making epic concept albums about kneeling and having soul!

Yes. I was tired of screaming that the last 2 albums are really uninspired lyrically... and decided to throw this party! :|

I don't know, Zoot.

Shall we count the water references in Joshua Tree? From a friend who counted:

Throughout the album, there are numerous explicit lyrical references to water and desert. Specifically, there are 46 references to the words rain, raining, rainin', rainfall, flood, water, well, sea, ocean, and river. Also, there are 17 references to desert, dry, plain, heat, dust, sunlight, and the sun.

Shall we count the dozens of times in the first three albums that Bono says, "I don't know what to say," or other phrases along the lines of not coming up with words?

I think you'll find recurring themes, phrases, and words in all of U2's eras. Kneeling goes back at least to One & MY, and the idea of a woman/lover/God ruling over the singer goes at least to WOWY, if not well before.

I think you're looking at the trees & not the forest....in order to denounce the whole forest....

because, uh, Bono didn't use soul, knees, or kneel before 2000...? :eyebrow:

Indian Summer Sky
so wind blow through to my soul

The First Time
She got soul, soul, soul, sweet soul

Mofo
Lookin' for to save my, save my soul

Acrobat
When I first met you girl, you had fire in your soul

Please
Please, please, get up off your knees

Mysterious Ways
If you want to kiss the sky better learn how to kneel
On your knees boy!

Zoo Station
I've been crawling around on my hands and knees

and don't even get me started on "love" and "sky"

Now I'm no longer in doubt. Zootlesque has way too much time on his hands this weekend :madspit:

See, that's not the same. Surely you can see the difference between using a common theme versus using the same fucking word! Am I wrong?

As for the first 3 albums... I know what you're saying about Gloria but I'll have to take a look at the other songs closely. What better way to spend a sunday?

Okay fair enough! But I still say the lyrics on the last 2 albums are comparitively weaker overall, even though I do enjoy listening to them cos hey... it's U2!

I disagree. Yes, there was a need for a title.

Some of us could have spent that 5.5 seconds clicking into this thread to move on to another that actually didn't bash ATYCLB or HTDAAB.

I think I'm going to run a search on all of your posts and do a word count on the number of times you've said lyrics and weak

I have also said several times that I think Miracle Drug and Crumbs are lyrically 2 of the best songs in the new era! And Fast Cars too... in my opinion. So... I'm not as negative as I seem to be.

I bash because I care! ;)

No. Seriously.

Hilarious, and true! I love HTDAAB!

More pointless bashing of HTDAAB, an album most people here love. Repeat bashers should find some music they do love, post 2000, and post about that.

Toss out Zoo Station because it's a colloquial phrase, and there are only 6 examples from over 13 years versus four from Atomic Bomb just about kneeling. The issue for me is that Bono keeps talking over and over in Atomic Bomb about the same idea. There's nothing wrong with an album in the context of love, but lyrically repeating the specific act of kneeling as symbolizing love is a problem.

Those repeated references sound like Bono is running out of ideas. That's why I'm not enthralled by Atomic Bomb- the musicianship is there, but lyrically I just can't connect to Bono's emotions like I could on Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby or Zooropa or even Pop.

I've also discovered that if you say "lyric" and "lyrically" too many times in your head while writing a post, they start to look very weird......:shifty:

An increase of approximately infinity percent.
