hey everyone.. if MTV were to do a 'U2 icon' show (they did it for the cure and metallica) who'd you want as performers. hypothetically. fire away.

The Killers
Coldplay
White Stripes (total pipe dream - but would love to see Jack attempt Desire or Bullet the Blue Sky)

The Killers
Starsailor
White Stripes ( 2nded would be amazing )
Oasis

Hmmm... they tend to go with really, REALLY mainstream bands

Metallica's was Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, Korn, Staind, Limp Bizkit, and others I fail to recall.

Aerosmith's was Pink, Papa Roach and some others.

So U2... what would I want or what would I expect? I'd like to see

BRMC
Coldplay
Audioslave or at least Tom Morello solo
Oasis
Ryan Adams

I'd expect:
No Doubt
Coldplay
And a slew of bands who don't care about U2 but want publicity

I'd like to see the Pet Shop Boys do their cover of "Where the Streets have no Name" (Just for a laugh)

Muse - Bullet the Blue Sky
The Cure - Running to Stand Still
Marilyn Manson - HMTMKMKM
JJ72 - Staring at the Sun
Killers - Discotheque
Guster - One
Billy Corgan - Vertigo
Finn Brothers - 0ne Tree Hill

I was under the impression that Robert Smith was not keen on U2, so I don't see that happening.

Yeah, I realise that. Apparently U2 are too much of a corporate giant for Smithy. But it's a "wants" thread not a "prediction" thread.

If I were to "predict" the bands/artists then it would probably go more like:

Coldplay
Sinead O'Connor
Gavin Friday
Ash
Oasis
Starsailor

but I think that's much less interesting than my "wants" list

I wouldn't want U2 to be on MTV Icon. That's my answer. To me, what U2 have done for and meant to the music industry and also the art of rock music over the past two decades means far more than them sitting in a theater watching a bunch of more recent bands do their best to play the songs they've spent 30 years writing and recording, pretending to enjoy watching it. That's for Aerosmith. Not U2.

I would hope if they did an Icon, they could change the format a bit and cut out all of the cheesy audience shots (audience members who are picked off the street and paid - or unpaid - to look excited as all hell, and sing along even if they don't know the words) and stick to the tributes from bands and the history bit.

That being said:

Radiohead - Love Is Blindness (Unreleased song Big Ideas has the same kind of feel)
Muse - Exit (Although, Bullet would be rad too)
Pearl Jam (Unlikely they'd participate)- Hawkmoon
Travis - New Year's Day or Drowning Man
Thursday (HUUUGE U2 fans) - I Will Follow or Electric Co.

The list goes on...

Rufus Wainwright (i'd love to hear him perform 'The First Time')
Coldplay
Radiohead
Gwen Stefani

I like this list, also I would add:

David Bowie--total dream, I'd love to see U2 cover Bowie as well
Prince
The Killers
The Hives

Kane! They're a Dutch band I've just recently heard do some U2 covers. They'd do it good. But they're probably not famous enough yet for Icons.

I would rather hear something like Linkin Park do something. I think (live anyway) that Chester Bennington has a good voice and it would be cool to see how close he could get to some of Bono's notes in songs like WOWY or maybe something off HTDAAB.

All time hypothetical list...

Frank Sinatra finally covers "Two Shots of Happy..."

Rolling Stones circa 1968 doing medley of "Desire" and "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"

The Beatles with "Lemon"

REM does "One"

Janis Joplin with Joe Cocker on "Last Night on Earth"

David Bowie covering "Stay"

Zeppling on "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me"

Leonard Cohen's rendition of "Pride"

Jim Morrison and Sly and the Family Stone doing "Mysterious Ways"

Prince brings down the house with his revamped version of "Beautiful Day".

U2 closes the show with a three song set...joined by...

Elvis Costello on "Out of Control"...
Bruce Springsteen on "Hawkmoon 269"...and
Johnny Cash on "40"/"Where the Streets Have No Name"

Marilyn Manson - Lemon
David Gilmour (Acoustic) - Slow Dancing
Metallica - Bullet The Blue Sky (They'd nail it, unlike the 'new' Sepultura)
Keane - WOWY ( Ive heard them do it already, and it sounded cool)

And if I were to pick a hip-hop artist, like when Snoop did 'tallica, it would be -

Nas - LAPOE

I would love to see:

Ryan Adams
Shakira (huge u2 fan and only singer with a voice today comparable to bono's)
Coldplay
Radiohead doing zoo station (their career is thanx to achtung)
REM
Green Day doing i will follow
Bob Dylan doing a weird rendition of ANY song
Muse doing the fly
jeff and tim buckley back from the dead to do stay

This would be interesting:

Metallica: Vertigo and The Fly (this is truly a dream of mine, having Metallica playing a U2 song :combust: )

The Rolling Stones: All Because Of You (The Stones instead of The Who cause I think it suits tem better)

Bruce Springsteen: One and I Will Follow (Bruce's voice on One would be perfect)

Bob Dylan: Please (Bob's voice on an aocustic version of this song.... )

Elvis Costello: Like A Song (perfect)

Velvet Revolver: The Electric Co. (I wanted a current rock band and I think they like U2 so they would do a good job with this one)

Marlin Manson: Where The Streets Have No Name (he could make a nice version of this one with his eletronic bulshit, it would sound interesting)

Pearl Jam: Pride (I'm not a fan of theirs but I think Vadder singing this song would be kinda cool, specially the chorus)

Oasis: Even Better Than The Real Thing (the band would probably play in a diferent way but I think it would work fine for Liam's voice here)

Joe Cocker: Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own or I Still haven't Found What I'm Looking For (oh yeah...)

Franz Ferdinand: Two Hearts Beat As One (interesting)

All Green: In A Little While and A Man And A Woman (really perfect)

David Bowie: Zoo Station or Love And Peace Or Else

The Who: Out Of Control :)hmm: )

The Cult: Mystrious Ways (intersting too)

Sepultura: Bullet The Blue Sky (I saw them playing this one live... it rocks)

It should be:

Green Day
Coldplay
Radiohead
Pearl Jam
Bruce Springsteen
Neil Young

don't know what new bands could play also...

:hmm: Avril Lavigne playing An Cat Dubh...
