Vertigo???

Guys at atu2.com have a theory...
The new album is named Vertigo. Here's the story:

If history is any indication, U2's next studio album might be named Vertigo.

The evidence suggesting the album title comes in the form of two domain names which were registered last week, U2vertigo.com and U2vertigo.net. The domains were registered June 22nd by a James Cooke of Dublin, and both domains point to nameservers at Digital:CC -- that's the Dublin-based web and multimedia production company co-owned by Adam Clayton's brother, Sebastian. Cooke is listed as the contact person for Digital:CC at the company's listing at CreativeIreland.com.

Contacted this week by @U2, Regine Moylett, U2's publicity director in London, didn't confirm or deny if Vertigo was the new album name, or one of the names being considered. She did tell @U2 the album name is "not yet known."

History suggests, however, that Vertigo may be one of the names being considered for the new album.

In the summer of 2000, just months before the release of All That You Can't Leave Behind, Digital:CC registered more than a dozen names that referenced U2-related phrases. (See our August 11, 2000, story.) The first names they registered were U2allthatyoucantleavebehind.com and allthatyoucantleavebehind.com. And much like the recent registration of U2vertigo.com, these older names were also registered by the same James Cooke of Digital:CC. Compare here:

Domain: U2vertigo.com
Domain: U2allthatyoucantleavebehind.com

As far as we know, U2vertigo.com and U2vertigo.net are the only domain names to be registered that may be related to the new U2 album. However, it's very possible that other names we're not aware of have also been registered, and that the Vertigo domain names have nothing at all to do with the album. But we think history suggests otherwise, and we'll continue to seek confirmation and further information about the name of the next U2 album.

So, what do you think? Vertigo sounds good to me.

WEBSTER'S

Dizziness or swimming of the head; an affection of
the head in which objects, though stationary, appear to
move in various directions, and the person affected finds
it difficult to maintain an erect posture; giddiness.

WORDNET

a reeling sensation; feeling about to fall

BIOLOGY

Vertigo is the sensation in which a person feels that he/she is spinning or rotating (or that their surroundings are rotating around them), but the person (and their surroundings) are in fact stationary.

MEDICAL

Dizziness accompanied by the illusion of motion.

So, the music from the new album will make us sick! In a good way, I hope.

Funny, before I read the atu2.com article, I was listening to Pornography by The Cure. You see, that music makes me dizzy!
And now U2's new album could be named Vertigo...
You see the irony in that?

Very interesting. Also possible that the tour could be called Vertigo instead of the album. Perhaps the name is a nod to the ongoing recording sessions with all the producers.

About the allthatyoucantleavebehind theory, that's all nice and well, but U2 picked the title from the lyrics of a song for the last album.

(which, given U2's history could mean the next one won't be)

:hmm: U2-Vertigo. Vertigo tour 2005.

But vertigo could indicate weakness, fear from falling/heights - a negative sound to it.

I like it! And I can see a lot of marketing/promotion potential with that name! And Bono spinning around on stage (and hopefully not falling off..)

I like it. But on another note, does it sort of remind you first of zoo tv with the dizzying effects and mind games, and then sort of Pop with the different colors of the music coming out. And is there some sort of connection between this and the rumors of Flood and Jacknife Lee helping to mix the album. This is all so very interesting...Ok just let me HEAR IT!!!!!

Also, you may notice that there were at least 3 registered names during July 2000 (Talkin Jubilee, AtHeartZero, ATYCLB) all registered within days of each other.

So there may be more to come, who knows. What we do know is that Vertigo has to be a good possibility.

And above all, methinks it's a great choice. . .
ZooTv was a collective idea hinting to Zoo Station but reflective of the whole album. POPMart obviously derived from the title of the album but it was a collective idea for the whole album.
Elevation was thematic of ATYCLB.

Maybe if U2 wants to dizzy up the tour, Vertigo is a good title for the album.

Also, we know about how U2 have named albums after lyrics in songs, themes and even song titles. Maybe Vertigo is something that was related to Xanax and Wine. Maybe that song is now known as Vertigo. Hell, I don't know.

Someone in Dublin needs to talk to the band and get some real info besides getting autographs and sniffing Bono's jock.

Sorry, I appreciate the info over on PLEBA, but it's riddled with giddy school girl "Oh he looked so cute.." . Please, just find out more about the album, titles, songs, themes, sounds. That's what we care about......the music!!!!!!!

Not trying to be an ass, just can't believe the people who have access to the band are more consumed by celebrity than by their art.

walk on man!!

Vertigo is a sweet a** name. I hope the album uses this title as it goes well with the new sound U2 suppose to have on this album.

I like that a.lot.
Also it's an interseting parallel to Elevation.

That would make sense. Things were going well for U2 a couple years ago - sales were great, the tour was selling out; they were on top of the world. In 2001 though, the world started crumbling around them. There was Sept. 11 for one, but also the death of Bono's father, and of course, the Iraq fiasco.

After this, I imagine "Vertigo" would fit well with Bono's state of mind. The world became a dizzying place.

If it is true then I'm glad that they have gone back to one word titles for albums.

I think that's reading into it too much.

I think that when they choose the names for the album it just has to be a cool sounding name with an interesting meaning not necessarily a very deep and full of stuff kind of name. Vertigo is like POP. You read that dictionary explanation than read about what people has been talking about on how the album is going to sound and it feels right.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this thread is the movie "Vertigo" - which is not a bad thing at all because that's an awesome movie. Maybe it's a good omen...
