U2achtung Review

Here's the u2achtung review! Later I will have time to translate it but in their conclusion, they say that we schould forget ATYCLB because HTDAAB is so good! They liked it very much! So, another good review!

All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

Love And Peace Or Else

City Of Blinding Lights

All Because Of You

A Man And A Woman

Crumbs From Your Table
Ce titre est d'ailleurs celui qui musicalement semble plus proche d'All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Original Of The Species

Seemingly the French for "Our Four Irishmen" is nos quatre paddies .

Here is my translation

Here is the google translation edited by me (as close as I can come - bear with me here) to sound like proper English:

U2Achtung.com was lucky enough to be able to attend a playing of the new U2 album! Envision champagne and small fireplaces burning (on Thursday, 11/4) in a small auditorium. The head office of Universal in Paris, all the staff of AZ (who distribute U2 in France) are present to play the eleventh U2 studio album. It is certainly excellent U2 which will arrive in shops on November 22nd with a sound much nearer to the 80's period of their music than the 90's.

Review of the album by song follows:
Vertigo
First single, first song on the album. A powerful sound, an energy close to punk, kind of a revival of the end of the Seventies. In the video which will accompany the limited edition of the album, Bono calls it "our first single on our first album." It should be noted that the version of the album is identical to that on the single which will be released on 11/8.

Miracle Drug
After a simple intro with the piano and the guitar, one might initially think that this is a gentle ballad similar to many songs on "All That You Can' t Leave Behind." With that said, the song continues to accelerate and evolve for the entire duration. Larry's energy and Edge's guitar are increasingly constant in this song. The instrumental bridge in the middle of the song is a splendid solo as only The Edge is able to offer.

Sometimes You Can' t Make It One Your Own
This intro in this ballad begins with acoustic guitar. Those who may worry about Bono's voice are reassured; here it is a splendid as the title of the song. A General interpretation might be that the sound is similar to the Joshua Tree period or even Rattle and Hum. The end of the song resounds with a cry of revolt from Bono. A song which should take on a new dimension when played live. It should also be noted that this one will be the second single from the album released sometime in February. One fear may be that the length of the title makes it a difficult single to digest.

Love And Peace Or Else
After a very industrial intro, the song keeps a steady rhythm supported with a very dark guitar. Similar to some perhaps to an old Depeche Mode song, "Pleasure, Little Treasure." Is this due mainly to the guitar sound? Another interesting bridge here, this song is very calm compared to the remainder of the album. Thematically, this song is very representative of the rest of the album....one might think of a military marching tune. U2 sounds great at the end of this song.

City Of Blinding Lights
With the longest intro of the album, (nearly one minute) one could draw comparisons to "Where The Streets Have No Name." This song sounds very much like 80's U2 with a rhythm similar to some songs on the "War" album. The voice of Bono here is very strong. There is a certain resemblance to "Children of the Rock'n'roll", released at the beginning of the 80's. Do you remember?! A song which should be very interesting to hear live. The bridge however is regretful - not up to the standards of the rest of the song and seems to interfere with the rhythm.

All Because Of You
The beginning is a wall of sound and leads into a pace similar to "Desire." A strong performance from Bono yet The Edge carries, as is often the case, all of the weight of the piece on his shoulders.

Man And A Woman
The intro is acoustic guitar. This one is somewhere between a ballad and more traditional rock'n'roll. Bono makes a grand effort to sing very high. However, this may be the least original song on the album.

Crumbs From Your Table
Again, the intro can be compared to "Where The Streets Have No Name" but is much slower at the beginning. The songs grows consistently louder /stronger? throughout. Think "Walk On" from ATYCLB. In fact, this song sounds like it could have been on that album. The live version should be great!

One Step Closer Encore
Another ballad, Bono's voice is great during the verses, the instrumentation being very sparse. Deceptively so; as soon as Bono stops singing The Edge launches out with beautiful passages, with pleading sounds/solos? reminiscent of Pink Floyd. The influence of Daniel Lanois is very present here.

Original Of The Species
The intro is all piano, an instrument which one will find throughout this piece. A swirling song, it sounds very much like English pop. Think Beatles or Coldplay but better.

Yahweh
This song gives pleads to stay with the band and thanks the listener for following them for a long time. Somewhere between a ballad and rock'n'roll, it says goodbye until the next album. It seems likely that this song will close the concerts in 2005.

In conclusion, forget ATYCLB. U2 is back in 2004 and is not ready to be forgotten. A group at the top of their game releasing an excellent album. To those who may feel that U2 are a group which belongs to the past: listen to this album - there is no doubt that your opinion will change.

An edited translation is in the "Where the Album Has a Name Forum" with the subject "Here is My Translation."

Sorry - first post in a long time and I did not mean to create a new thread,

Enjoy :)

Very postive indeed...I've seen Crumbs..' referred to as "Walk On"-ish several times now, and I have to say if the weakest song is of that calibre (8/10 for me) then this is going to be a hugely impressive album.

There is a second review on u2achtung.com! Could you translate and post it please?

This reveiw quells my fears of an
album made only to sell records.

I haven't heard it obviously, but
I'm getting the impression that it's
dark, it's somber, and it's not terrribly
friendly. But it still roars with passion
from beginning to end.

It's four 40 something men dealing
with the passage of time and what
happens when the ideologies of youth
are ravaged by personal and world tragedy.

I like it, sounds like their first album
about hurting from living life. New direction
for them thematically, if not politically.

Musically, I've heard it compared
to every album they have ever done,
which makes me wonder if a synthesis
album IS a new direction. Maybe it is.

Can't wait.

Sometimes You Can't make it on Your Own, Love and Peace, City Of Blinding Lights, All Because Of You, s'imposent d'emblée, laissant moins leur chance aux titres nettement plus faibles que sont Crumbs From Your Table, A Man And A Woman, et, dans une moindre mesure, Yahweh.

Vertigo

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

Love And Peace Or Else

City Of Blinding Lights

All Because Of You

A Man And A Woman

Crumbs From Your Table
à I Still haven't Found What I'm Looking For...

Original Of The Species

That's the second one!

 Did they say Pink Floyd? Edge sounding David Gilmour-esque = me :faint:

I am telling you HTDAAB is going to be all I've been predicting it would be. This is going to be U2's year! :hyper:

Relatedly, did U2tour.de ever stick up the english translations for the rest of their reviews? I'm interested to read them.

First part:

Review by Fabienne Fabienne (who also attended the preview of the album)
It’s with pleasure that we publish it here. On Thursday November 4th, Universal finally made it possible for the press and some guests to hear How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is not an album which reveals all its substance on the first listen. It is an album rich, intense, dense, vigorous, emotional. Ambitious. The structures of the songs are generally complex, sophisticated and sometimes even obscure. Sometimes You Can't make it On Your Own, Love and Peace or Else, City Of Blinding Lights, All Because Of You, are the initial standouts, followed by Crumbs From Your Table, A Man And A Woman, and, to a lesser extent, Yahweh.

U2’s eleventh studio album is indisputably dominated by The Edge. He's in a state of galvanized fury and inspiration, and is playing at the top of his virtuosity. Edge amalgamates with his instruments, handling the guitar like Zidane his balloon or Picasso his brush. The crystalline reminiscences of The Joshua Tree or the watery colours of The Unforgettable Fire come to the fore with a A Baby edge of sadness.

The vocal performance of Bono: His voice isn’t as strong as it once was...but we have known that for a few years...often raucous, rather low...But what Bono lost in clearness and high end, he has gained in-depth of song, in subtlety, enthusiasm, lyricism. Bono s'experiments with the precision of his voice has shown a new sincerity and richness from his heart...

That excerpt makes it seem like HTDAAB is the sort of album you need to spend time with and explore to get the most out of it. Promising, very promising...

part two of four:

...This new dimension brings the album to another level emotionally.

Vertigo
The song swirls and curls with the punk references of Out of Control or I Will Follow, it’s a lot of fun, but really, its not that representative of the remainder of the album, which has layers of guitars compared to this track k. It should be a killer live track for the band.

Miracle Drug
has a resonant guitar introduction and starts softly. It then builds and builds with a ferocious edge. The voice of Bono quickly moves towards exaltation and he expresses a palpable pain, mixing in Edges angry riffs. The environment of the song reminds one of Coldplay’s Politik...

Sometimes You Can't Make It One Your Own
a ballad exhaling an emotional intensity which draws from the tears of the singer... The start is very sparse, with a simple guitar, soft, almost acoustic... and quickly builds to a place which will heat even the most frozen hearts. Similar to, but much better than, the ballads on All That You Can't Leave Behind, as it has real emotional weight and doesn't feel fake.
