Hi Follower! Miami ? a great song studio and live. I agree with you U2 shouldn?t have abandoned it halfway through the Tour (they shouldn?t have abandoned Do You Feel Loved or Angels early on too [and replaced them with ?oldies? ?hits? ? NYD / Pride / & Still Haven?t Found. If they were going to replace them then it would been better to go with newly re-worked versions of Daddy?s Gonna Pay / Lemon / Numb / etc.

I wrote this a little while ago:

Miami - It appears it is disliked by a large number of fans. It is a kind of ?throwaway? type of song ? a fun / loose song that U2 has been fond of including on each album and nearly in the same place on their albums (i.e. Trip Through Your Wires / Tryin? To Throw Your Arms Around The World / Some Days Are Better Than Others / Wild Honey) I imagine some of those who dislike Miami also dislike these other fun / loose U2 songs. Bono said that Pop ?starts off with a party and ends with a hangover.? I find Miami to be a song that captures the feeling of a hangover (since Pop addresses the popularity of the drug Ecstasy = the effects of ?coming down? off of Ecstasy). The beat reminds me of the hiccups that sometimes accompanies ?drinking.? The lyrics and the vibe of it create a picture of someone staggering around in the daytime hungover and making observations on the absurdity of our pop culture. Maybe we can?t identify with being hungover in Miami but maybe we can associate with a similar state and walking through a Shopping Mall or some other place in society like it ? a Supermarket? Or maybe we?ve been hungover in Vegas or Atlantic City or a local Casino (= exaggerated forms of our Shopping Malls / Supermarkets / our city?s ?Golden Mile? of stores / strip plazas / restaurants-fast food joints / cinemaplexes. A problem with Miami may be its placement on the album. It may be better to have it follow Mofo. Mofo is the end of the party and Miami represents the beginning of the hangover. I think it could make for a better transition than immediately going to the severe shift of If God Will Send His Angels. Also fans may prefer a live version of Miami.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I started its hard to stop : - ) Playboy Mansion would do very well to follow Miami. Another daytime hangover song observing / commenting on ?pop culture.? I wouldn?t necessarily advocate for a radical alternation but it seems to me that it lacks something ? a bigger fatter bass beat? / some energy from The Edge somewhere (in the middle or at the end?)? Apparently a new version of it was scheduled to be released on the Gangs Of New York single but when Hands didn?t win the Oscar it was cancelled. Hopefully U2 release it on one of their upcoming singles. Until then or if it is never released maybe a fan can give it a new mix.

Staring At The Sun would do very well to follow Playboy Mansion. Another daytime song. The hungover individual becomes more fully conscious and begins a spiritual awakening. ?There is an insect in your ear? = ?conscience can sometimes be a pest.? And then ?the more you take the less you feel? and the ?you got to give it away? of Last Night On Earth.? And then the ?you get to feel so guilty? / ?what you thought was freedom was just greed? / leaving it all behind / and the ?goodbye? of Gone. Velvet Dress / Angels / and Please deal with confronting one?s partner or lover who doesn?t want to wake up / ?give it all away? / leave it all behind and move on to living an authentic life. I have to admit I haven?t given enough attention to the Best of 90s version of it. Yet I haven?t read much praise of it by fans. Maybe a fan can give it a new mix using elements from the acoustic version on the Please EP / the Best Of 90s version / the new 2002 Brothers in Rhythm Club Mix -9:42 and the Brothers in Rhythm Ambient Mix - 5:27 / and 3 mixes from the SATS single?

By changing the track order a bit (and allowing U2 to finish a couple of the ?unfinished? songs) Pop can have a better ?story? thereby inviting listeners to go on more of a coherent and consistent ?journey.? Friday night ?clubbing? ? Saturday afternoon hangover and physical and spiritual recovery ? Saturday evening facing the consequences of a lifestyle / it?s effects one?s relationship / and losing one?s partner or illicit lover ? Saturday late night = ?where is God?? (Beautiful Day is Sunday morning!)

I?ll agree with the majority here thus far ? Please (Live) (Rotterdam)

Maybe listening to live Pop songs will give some the opportunity to appreciate certain individual songs and maybe make up a CD with live replacements? Or even give Pop a second chance? Here is another way of looking at it:

I've seen the Please 5 song single at Tower now and again.

That?s good enough. I thought maybe the ATYCLB ones were much more easier to get.

U2Soar, you love these little projects of yours, don?t you? ;) I like some of your ideas and I like your interpretation for Miami. And maybe you?re right about its placement on the album. On a side note, I?d love to have the japanese edition of Pop, the one with Holy Joe as extra track. :) But that?s another story, and we?re going off topic here, lol

Cheers

Thanks Vampira. I have had that site bookmarked for ages ;) But thanks for reminding me of it, some pics are very nice, really. I love b&w pics and Henry Wagner seems to be both, a great photographer and a great U2 fan, btw. :)

And thanks rafmed, for my new avatar.

Cheers
