For those that don't understand Spanish, here is are the highlights
- August 1986, Bono visits Chalatenango, a town near the capital of El Salvador. The hotbed of the war.
- He was accompanied by Ali
- The trip was setup by Amnesty International
- Bono can see and hear mortars and bombs near his location
- The reporter assumes that "Rattle and Hum" is the sound that Mortars and Bombs make.
- The campesinos (farmers) guide him to safety. He was scared for his life, for the town folk, it was nothing new
- He also visits Nicaragua during his trip
- The song was written to protest the U.S government's involvement in the wars in Central America
- Local myths : he did not join the Guerillas in the front line and he did not get drunk in a local bar
- No one took pictures, some Guerilla leaders don't even remember the encounter, no immigrations records
exist because those papers were lost in an Earthquake
Its interesting to see how Bono has changed from a "hands on" activist to a more "political" activist.
I prefer his old way, since I found he wrote most passionate lyrics back then.
But it’s great to see that to this day, he still puts so much energy and compassion into helping those less fortunate.
