The trailer came on the same hard drive as the film. The decision to play the trailer lies with the theater. Many have chosen not to. So, there it sits on many a server......

that's just so stupid. Why not showing it? what did your chief said? -

- I saw many 3D film with real people in the IMAX - that most times much more exciting than an animation 3D-Pic. So it would just be a very good advertising for the 3D - Theaters. Something that could raise the attention. Why not showing it? I don't get it....:(

I work in a corporate environment, so any decisions like this are not explained, just expected to be carried out.

There are probably many reasons for not showing it. It's not age appropriate for Meet the Robinsons, it doesn't even have a distributor yet, I don't think it even has a rating, and for all we know, it may not be released in the Fall. My guess is mainly the first reason - it's not age appropriate. I'm not sure there will be many 5 year olds lining up opening night to see U2 3D, and before someone tells me "what about the parents" - agreed, but if you follow that logic, why not throw in Grindhouse as a trailer?

My company, and I'm sure many others, have a firm stance on what trailers can be played on films based on the film's rating. Since MTR is G, only G or PG rated films can be played. I doubt U2 3D falls into either category.

It's obvious that the U2 trailer could be shown to minors (no violence, no sex or anything like that) and most children, especially 5 years old do not visit the theater by there own (I hope so). You know that better, but I imagine that many adults also watch "Meet the Robinsons" - or am I wrong?

I just hope that many people become aware of the U2 movie and that it becomes a big success and puches the great technology - I want more films in 3D!!!!!

(I don't get your point with Grindhouse - of course you cannot show a Trailer like that - great by the way - before a Children-movie)

I found out there's an IMAX theater up in Syracuse, a little over an hour from me. And yes, I'm a big enough dork that if I'm still living here in the fall, I'll drive that far to see it :shifty:

I think you missed my point. It's not the content of the trailer, it's the eventual rating of the film. There are trailers for "R" rated films that don't have a lot of violence, sex, or language. The content of the trailer is not the point. In fact you will never see sex or language in a "green band" trailer, regardless of rating. Any trailer that contains that kind of content will have a red band. You hardly ever see those any more.

I couldn't agree more.

That was a failed attempt at humor to make my point. Perhaps I should have included a

And when the IMAX tells you they are not playing it, you can see it at the Carousel Mall on their digital 3D screen

I thought that the movie wasn't going to be shown in IMAX theaters that it was shot digitally not with film.. That it was only going to be shown in RealD 3D theaters..

muh2o can you confirm this?

I've thrown this question over to someone in my corporate office I trust to get me accurate information. He still has not gotten back to me, but the information may not be available yet.

I've also spoken to my projection technician who basically told me that if the deal is with Real D, it will only be shown on digital screens.

The bottom line: Who knows?

Further, just because a film is shot with digital cameras means nothing in the end. It could still end up as film.

thanks so much for the info. Look forward to hearing more when you get that info.
It would be hella cool to see it at a IMAX theater...

It was announced today in Hollywood that the much-anticipated new U2 concert documentary, U2 3D, will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, which begins May 16.

There is no word yet on whether or not the band will attend the preview, but one has to
assume due to their affection for the French Riviera, their attendance is likely.

that's so f****** GREAT!!!!!
that means that we really might expect fall for the release (I really doubted that - to risky, too less 3D-capable Theaters). That sounds just wonderful in my ears.

@muho2 - sorry, my English isn't very well - I just misunderstood your ironic point.

"In addition, Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington's U2 concert doc will be for sale at the market and there will be an out-of-competition showing of 20 minutes of Scorsese's documentary on the Rolling Stones "

Variety is also reporting that "U2 3D" will be shown on Cannes-Film-Festival this May. But they still haven't a distributor. Cannes-Festival that means a lot of attention, many photos, many important producing people who can watch the movie and become aware of the technic. Great!!!!!!!
And it's for sure - U2 will show up in Cannes...

U2 3D Trailer on U2.com!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sneak Preview - U23D

U2 3D is heading for cinemas later this year – and a preview airs in US cinemas this week.

The feature length film, shot during U2’s visit to South America on the Vertigo Tour, is directed by Catherine Owens, with additional direction from Mark Pellington. The movie will arrive in specialist 3D cinemas in the autumn and a trailer has just begun airing alongside the only other 3D film to come out this year, Disney’s ‘Meet The Robinsons’.

Owens, longtime collaborator with U2 on live-show visuals, says 'this was the ultimate challenge in presenting U2’. But the results, she predicts, will startle audiences.

'There is no comparison with a traditional concert film seen in 2D. One minute you are on stage with the band and the next you are at the back of the stadium. 'The best way I can describe it for the viewer,' she adds, 'Is that it's like being on the wings of a bird flying around the concert stadium - it's really something else.'

As the web is not yet in 3D, our 30-second clip has one dimension less – that’s plain old 2D.

Watch it here

The 3D shoot took place over seven shows in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina in February last year and the film is being produced by 3ality Digital in Los Angeles, edited by Olivier Wicki with music produced by Carl Glanville, who has a long list of U2 production credits. Director of 3D photography was Peter Anderson and the Director of photography was Tom Krueger.

so is it just the concert or are there going to be some band moments in between ala Rattle & Hum?

Does anyone have the trailer in the better quality version from u2.com? would be very great

If it's screening there, maybe it will make it's way to theaters before Fall 2007!

What we know right now:

Director: Catherine Owens (video to Original of the species) and Mark Pellington (Arlington Road)

3-D director of photography: Peter Anderson

2-D director of cinematography for the film's 2-D footage: Tom Krueger

Producer: 3ality Digital Entertainment

Soundtrack: Carl Glanville (did also the Chicago DVD sound)

Cutter: Olivier Wicki (it's said 700 hours of footage to be cut)

cameras used: Sony Cinealta 950
Buenos Aires was shot with 9 3D-HD cams (Vincent Pace and James Cameron developed them)

filmed through seven shows during February, March - and a half year later some additional footage in Syndey.
Main event: the two concerts in Buenos Aires (with all cams)

Premier: Cannes-Film-Festvial in May 2007

Trailer: is out: as a 2D-Version to find on youtube and on U2.com in a better quality (would be great if someone can posts this better quality version here)

The 3D-Trailer is also out and might be show before "Meet the Robinsons 3D" - but that depends on the particular theater.

Which theaters does it show?
long time it was said the IMAX-Theaters, but now it seems that theaters with the RealD-technology will show the movie.

a distributor has not been found yet, the film maybe should be sold in Cannes.

When does it arrives in theaters? maybe fall this year.

Perrypickwick,

this version of the trailer is excellent quality (was actually ripped from u2.com). I downloaded it myself in no time and vouch for the quality..

thanks for the link. But I must say I was a little dissapointed - is this really the "high quality" version from U2? - with all those pixels....
