Hidden Messaging Techniques Used on U2 CD to Improve Sales

SANTA MONICA (AP) - The Irish supergroup U2 (news-sites) resorted to using subliminal
messaging techniques including placing hidden messages on their latest album.
''Even the band was astonished to see sales stay in the Top 100,'' a source at the band's
managing firm, Principle Management, said on condition of anonymity. ''U2 did not think
that subliminal messaging would have a positive impact on sales.''
Several tracks on ''All That You Can't Leave Behind,'' U2's multi-platinum comeback album of 2000,
contain small whispers of words. The first single from the album ''Beautiful Day,'' which went to
#1 in the United States and United Kingdom, repeats the words "Pop was a great album" through the
chorus of the song. ''Buy our stuff now'' is embedded in the guitar solo of another track,
''Elevation.'' A third track ''Wild Honey'' includes the words ''You need U2 concert tickets.''
CD Cover Includes 'Ominous' Message
The ''All That You Can't Leave Behind'' CD cover includes the letters 'J 33-3', which according to
John Maxwell of the Hobart Institute of Psychology, contains a subtle reference to shopping malls
and large department stores.
''Everyone has been at a Walmart, a Sears, or a Macy's and has heard the ominous announcement
'Sale in Aisle J 33-3.' It's obviously a subliminal message designed to get fans to be in the
frame of mind to purchase items or tickets related to U2.''
Label Denies Knowledge of Messages; Band may have to return Grammy Awards
U2's current record company denied any knowledge of the messages. A
spokesperson would not deny the claim that the album contained subliminal messages but
added, ''If U2 did this, it was without the knowledge of any Interscope-Universal
employee.''
Once a concept only mentioned in science fiction and thriller films such as ''Blade Runner''
(news-sites) or ''Conspiracy Theory'' (news-sites), the practice has been banned by the Motion
Picture Association (MPA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
''Potentially, U2 will have to return all Grammy awards won at the 2000 and 2001 awards ceremonies,"
Michael Smith, spokesperson for the RIAA explained. ''The practice of putting any sort of hidden
message in music or on an album cover is strictly prohibited by RIAA policies.''
