I haven't seen a thread for this before...and if there is I am terribly sorry.

U2 (especially Bono) have had a few "personalities" during live performances throughout their career, most appearing during the Zoo TV era :)heart:). So I pose the question: Which one's YOUR favorite?

Mine's gotta be either MacPhisto or the Dalton Brothers. :applaud:

Sir... you stole my avatar. I must kill you.

;)

Nah, but it's pretty obvious who my favorite is.

Mirrorball Man was pretty cool, but I think my favorite was the whole band in the blue "Zooropa Lemon" suits.

Haha, it's totally a different pose!

Yeah MacPhisto was the shiznit.

I wish Bono would bring him back...like as part of the encore on the next tour, that'd be so wicked.

and "Mr. The Edge To You" as gay cowboy pornstar! :D

Gay cowboy pornstar? I must have missed this. I didn't realize him dressing like that with the "Mr. The Edge To You" was a gay cowboy pornstar.

It's funny you post this topic, because his alter-egos fascinate me. I was considering the degree to which The Fly and Macphisto were actually simultaneously therapeutic and disturbing. I think he was having some serious identity issues at the time, shedding the Puritan Bono and embracing his inner megalomania--but to allow himself to do that he had to hide behind a mask. What do you all think about the personas as Bono's way of reconciling different sides of himself...?

Then with that in mind, I considered why he dressed as a boxer for PopMart. I think times were pretty tough then and he considered himself a fighter.

To summarize, how do these personas play into Bono's psychological evolution? I think he started spiraling down a hole for quite some time, culminating in Pop, and this had to do with resisting vs. embracing his identity... that I'm convinced was finally reconciled sometime after Pop (note that Beautiful Day follows Wake Up Dead Man...why??)

I think it's more the 'stache that says it more than the shirt. And the hat. You know, for the cowboy part of the equation.

MacPhisto, by far. I could probably write a thesis on him. I think he's one of the most interesting artistic characters created in the latter half of the 20th century.

Yeah, wow. ;)

I know I'm representing a minority here but I don't like any of them.

There was a time I thought some of Bono's alter egos were cool but they just haven't passed the test of time. When I look at these characters today, they just seem ridiculous. It almost makes me feel embarrassed to watch some of this stuff. I guess it was okay for the 90s, but I'm not a big fan of any of Bono's or the band's incarnation of the 90s. The music, however, is awsome.

That's fair, I can understand that. They did work a lot better for the 90s, but I still love me some MacPhisto.

Yeah, I can't imagine MacP or The Fly walking on stage now. Although, strangely, I can imagine Mr. The Edge.

I don't see how someone could honestly dislike the Dalton Brothers. U2 showing signs of humor is generally a good thing.

I laugh myself silly everytime I think about the Daltons. I just love Adam dressed up as Betty. And you're right, prior to 1990, U2 being pubilcly funny is a cause for celebration.
