I've been thinking... about why EBTTRT appeals more to me than COBL. And it's not just cos the former was on the greatest album of all time and I grew up watching that video and blah blah blah! It's cos of all that sexy slide guitar!!!

So try to imagine a COBL that's all guitar and no keyboards or at least much less keyboards. That soft keyboard intro is replaced by some delicious EBTTRT-ish guitar! Would it be greatly improved in your opinion? I think so, at least musically.. forgetting about the 'Oh you look so beautiful tonight' line for a second.

In either case, my favorite part of COBL is the wall of guitar in the chorus. So uplifting... like Beautiful Day is!

Even better than the real thing no matter what you do to either song.

NO MATTER WHAT

Zoot, there's a present for you in a certain album ranking thread in a certain B&C

I honestly don't see how this is even close.

Are you kidding? EBTTRT is the epitome of cool!!! Not just the song and that guitar and drums... but the freakin video!

Well if we're going on video, it's obvious that COBL stands no chance.

I guess I'm in the minority thinking it's one of the weaker tracks on Hut Dab.

It may be the epitome of cool, but COBL is the epitome of awesome. :D

EBTTRT has a unbelievably kickass intro, but the song as a whole falls flat and I nearly always skip to One after listening to the first twenty seconds or so. The chorus just isn't interesting enough. If they were to go a different direction with that incredible riff, though, what a song it could be...

COBL has the same problem with me. Has an amazing riff, but the song just doesn't go anywhere or get any better.

COBL takes a leak on EBTTRT, kicks it out the door, pushes it off a cliff, and then dances on its grave.

I'd like to hear some more guitar in COBL in the sense of extending Edge's slide solo, though, and it'd be cool if the studio version had the live slide intro too.

 You think EBTTRT doesn't go anywhere??? It's got such an awesome intro, a great build up, a fantastic guitar solo (that's used so beautifully in the Perfecto Mix) and it literally orgasms at the end with the Take me higher's and the grunting (video)! It's like sexual intercourse set to music!

As they are on the album, I'd take Even Better.... 10 times out of 10.

If COBL was more like the live version, and subtract the annoying "ooohhhs" from the pre-chorus and it's a pretty good matchup. I think they really failed that song on the final album version. That said it's one of my top 3 or 4 HTDAAB songs.

I don't care all that much for the live version of EBTTRT, but it's a better song on the album. In fact the version on Achtung is a perfect catchy dance rock tune. Almost flawless in that respect.
Bono sounds perfect, Edge and the band nail it. Great sound overall. The drums defintely sound better on EBTTRT.

COBL sounds really messy on the album, the live versions are a drastic improvement.

I don't think either song is in U2's top 40, but it's an interesting comparison.

Totally agree! I don't care too much about the live versions of EBTTRT but the album version is pretty fucking tight!

And COBL guitar in the live version is much much better!

But what the hell is porn guitar? what, like that cheesy *bowchikabowbow* music in porn videos? :lmao:

city of blinding lights is a typical u2 song , with so-so lyrics , it's u2 playing u2 , in 2 years no one will remember this song
it's so gray and pointless

the thing any time , anywhere

Wait a minute! When I voted, there was no Scarlet option! (Not that I know "Scarlet" :reject: - I think this poll should be restarted! Conspiracy! Something is fishy here :madwife:

I originally voted EBTTRT, and stick to it!

and strange that this 'Scarlet' has 26 votes at this point, with only 21 votes being cast. :madwife:

I'd take one song at the quality of Even Better than the Real Thing over an album of 20 songs at the quality of City of Blinding Lights.

"You're honey, child, to a swarm of bee's. Gonna blow right through you, like a breeze." Mmmmm.....

City of Blinding Lights. Amazing build-up. It has some bad lines but I don't care at all. COBL = the U2 I love

Even if I love EBTTRT. It's probably the coolest U2 song, tied with HMTMKMKM

Off the top of my head...
COBL - between #15 and #20
EBTTRT - between #30 and #40
