"Bono wants to set the record straight about the aforementioned Tom Brady and a hitherto obscure conversation with Edge about Superbowl allegiances. Clearly some shocking misunderstanding had taken place: 'Edge has asked me to finally set the record straight – and if Tom Brady doesn’t believe it he will meet him at dawn at a place of his choosing. And I tell you - because I have personal experience of this – do not pick a fight with a man who makes a living from hand to eye co-ordination.'"

What's this all about?

Oh, and Brady makes his living with hand to eye coordination too. I'd definately prefer the Edge in a fight, but I think Tom would put him, uh... One Step Closer if you know what I'm mean.

The source is from U2.com (the news section on the front page today). I did a copy/past below (hope that's legal). Check out the last paragraph below:

From U2.com...

'This baby in my belly...'

Some sexy mama's and funky papa's in Boston last night as U2 got dizzy with Vertigo again.

Last night's show was the first after a week off but you wouldn't have known that crew and band had been chilling for a few days. City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, Elevation...this was a show sizzling and crackling within minutes. Someone had a smart idea to attract the singer's attention too: 'This baby in my belly wants to dance with Bono' read a sign held by one young woman. She was on stage and dancing with the man in seconds. 'This is the kind of thing that happens around here … Mama… sexy mama.'

Adam is in a very cool new shirt tonight, seems to be sparkling, and Larry and Edge are also on fire. Feels like everyone has had a good break, arriving in Boston just hours before the show. Different members of crew and management have flown in from all parts of the globe and everyone knows that with a week in New York coming up, that's all the rest for the foreseeable future.

Cry/Electric Co climaxes with a snatch of 'Rat in a Cage' and soon Still Haven't Found, always a rafter-raiser, is underway. 'We want to thank the beautiful mecurial melodies of Keane that are accompanying us here in Boston,' says Bono, before thanking everyone for 'hanging around for us...and giving us a great life.'

U2, he continues, are just getting going, just at the start of their career. (Not sure where that puts Keane but they went down great anyway.) John Kerry gets a namecheck in Beautiful Day and Bono is 'thinking about America' as he breaks into 'Many Rivers To Cross'. And in a city of learning, Miracle Drug is dedicated to two doctors - 'huge inspirations' - who have come to the show tonight: Paul Farmer and Joia Mukherjee who are AIDS specialists and activists with Partners in Health. (Interesting aside: there is a brilliant book by the Pullitzer Prize winning author Tracy Kidder all about Paul Farmer. It's called Mountains Beyond Mountains.)

A moving performance of Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own follows, and then we're into the fiercely aggressive trio of Love and Peace, Sunday Bloody Sunday and Bullet the Blue Sky before Miss Sarajevo tingles every spine as Bono again finds 'the opera in me'. This is one song that this tour is going to be remembered for.

Just as he hoped, everyone gets our their cellphones to 'turn this place into a milky way' for One and it reminds the singer of an extraordinary man, Tom Brady, who has just signed up as a supporter with the ONE Campaign - the two millionth person to sign up. 'I also want to salute someone (else).. without him we would not see the AIDS emergency taken seriously in Washington DC - John Kerry!'

Big response for that one. The First Time and Wild Horses are two neat surprises, songs that you hope might be in the list, but you can't be certain. There was no doubt that With or Without You was going to be in - surely the volume never goes higher at a U2 show, so many singing along with such passion. Also time for another step into the spotlight for a lucky lady in the audience: ' Where are
You? Where are you?' asks Bono, scanning the audience. 'Where's my girl ?'

All Because of You fairly races by and as Yahweh begins, Bono wants to set the record straight about the aforementioned Tom Brady and a hitherto obscure conversation with Edge about Superbowl allegiances. Clearly some shocking misunderstanding had taken place: 'Edge has asked me to finally set the record straight – and if Tom Brady doesn’t believe it he will meet him at dawn at a place of his choosing. And I tell you - because I have personal experience of this – do not pick a fight with a man who makes a living from hand to eye co-ordination.'
Before you know it Larry is introducing '40' and there's no disagreement on the allegiances in this one. A ancient psalm closes a very modern night.

I had to look him up. Here's a clearer version of the original post:

Jeez, ease off, man. :|

I'd be more afraid of Tom Brady's wife...

Sorry, but I'm just getting kinda sick of this. I see this all over the boards here when someone asks a question and/or puts forth an idea and some people take it as an open invitation to either respond in some way other than in direct response to the original post or just be a dick in general. I'm tired of reading it happen to other people, and in my own personal case, I'd prefer people just not read my posts if they want to do it to me.

All I wanted to know was what sparked the comment from Bono. I don't care if it was in jest, and I already know the fucking source so providing that doesn't answer the question either.

Next, lets allow this thread to spiral downwards into a I hate/love Pop discussion.

Evidently there was a rumor that Edge bet against the Patriots (when U2 played at the SuperBowl halftime). Bono mentioned all this at the 10/3 show when Tom Brady was in the Ellipse that night. They were all definitely laughing about it, and Edge took his guitar off and swung it like a bat. Tom Brady is the Patriot's QB.

I'm glad to know Edge is a Pat's fan. Now if he'd dump the Yankees shirt and hat all would be well :)

I was at this show - it was Monday, October 3rd in Boston.

Tom Brady is the Quarterback for the New England Patriots. He has led them to three Super Bowls - and was the MVP of two of those games. Given how popular the Super Bowl is, I'm stunned to hear that people don't know this - but here in New England, everyone knows.

Although I didn't see him, apparently Tom Brady was in the audience on Monday (I did see John Kerry). Tedy Bruschi - another Patriot player - attended a show I was at last May.

Anyway, as you may recall, U2 played the half-time Super Bowl in 2002 - the same game that brought on the Patriots first Super Bowl win (they also won in 2004 and 2005 - they are the current reigning champs). The Super Bowl is the game that decides the winner of the NFL - or National Football League - in the U.S. (not soccer). Since U2 played at the same game that featured the Patriots, I think this inspired Bono to make some light-hearted fun comments.

Of course, as others pointed out, Tom Brady also makes his living from hand-to-eye coordination. And given that he towers over Edge, is used to being tackled and hit hard every week, and is about 14 years younger, I'm sure Brady would easily win any "battle" with Edge. ;) But it was meant as a big fun joke.

Also, at the concert, both Bono and Larry wore a Red Sox jersey for a bit - so all is not lost. :D

I don't know if this is related, but I do recall catching a TV show called, "Fox, Under the Helmet" after that super bowl that showed behind the scenes footage of that super bowl.

U2 was featured prominently, mostly clowning with the media (Bono mocks a Heisman trophy pose, etc.) and they show Edge being asked the big question about the game. Namely, who should start at quarterback for the Pats, veteran Drew Bledsoe who was injured early in the season and not yet fully recovered or youngster Tom Brady who got them to the big game.

I don't remember his exact words but Edge said something along the lines of, "you've got to go with Bledsoe due to the experience and superior arm strength, although you never know how severly a (whatever injury Bledsoe had) injury will effect him, I'm playing with one myself right now (laughs)."

I'm sure whatever was said both then and now is all in good fun, although I don't doubt Brady could easily handle Edge if he wanted to.

I reckon Edge could take him with back up from Larry, the bigger they are the harder they fall:wink:

Now if Edge beat him over the head with a guitar, my moneys on Edge...........................

Ok so.......... Brady 2-1 odds favorite in unarmed combat.......
Edge with guitar vs. Brady with no weapon, Edge to win EVENS.

Edge plus Larry in a pissed off mood, 4/2:wink:

All bets are on............

I heard on the news that Bono paid tribute to Tom Brady last night (via video) at the SI Sportsman Of The Year Award

Bono seems to be quite fond of Tom, he mentioned him again over the weekend

You're an idiot. One person asks you to provide a source so they can perhaps use some extra info to take steps to answer your question and another simply says you're joking in case your pissing yourself with worry that U2 are going to fight tooth and nail with some 'football' player.

Settle down and stop getting on your soapbox as if people are doing you a huge wrong. It's an online forum, so crying and moaning just because people come in and post in a way you don't like is just pathetic. Stop getting so worked up about so little, how old are you for christ's sake?!

Yeah, he did pay tribute to Brady. He made a joke about how proud he was that Brady finally achieved his goal of gracing the cover for SI's Swimsuit issue.

lol, that's cute. Where did you hear that if you know, I'm just curious :)

Tom isn't directly involved w/ the One campaign as far as I know, he has gone to shows though and Bono has mentioned from the stage that Tom signed up. They have met earlier in the year, and Tom was at that party for Steve Morse the other night that Bono attended. I have heard for years that Tom is a U2 fan.

Funny andedote to this. I sat in front of Tom Brady's parents during the first championship Superbowl. During the U2 halftime show Mr. Brady leaned forward and tapped my sister on the shoulder asking her "just who is this band again?" She replied "U2 Mr. Brady!! Your son is like 25!!!"

Edge would burn Tom Brady to death with laserbeams from his eyes.

Obviously.

Ah here we go....

Does anybody happen to have a copy of this show? Dr. Paul Farmer is a personal hero of mine and I would love to hear the dedication!
