During Zoo TV, why were there helicopters during Running To Standstill

I always hear helicopters taking off at the end of the song, and seguging into Where The Streets Have No Name... what did this all mean?

During Running to stand still Bono plays the character - a pilot, guessing from the Sydney show - of a Vietnam War veteran (the clothes), I guess helicopters mean "pilot rescued".
