Numb, Lemon, Stay, Hold Me Thrill Me, Discotheque, Staring at the Sun, Last Night On earth...

I heard those songs on the radio to the point of exhaustion when they were new.

So tell me why the only song that has gotten any airplay from this album is Vertigo.
(I've heard All Because Of You ONCE, and the other 2 singles a combined ZERO times since their release)

That's weird because here in Red Deer, Alberta they played the hell out of Vertigo, ABOY, and SYCMIOYO. COBL got overlooked though. I've heard Miracle Drug as many times on the radio and it's not even a single.

No, the truth is probably more along the lines of how generic and 'ordered' radio playlists have become. Strength of music, variety of music etc, those things don't count now. A very generic, test marketed, demographic specific playlist is the order of the day, and the concentration of radio station ownership has only heightened that across the board. I would wager that songs from Zooropa or Pop, released new now in 2005, would receive far less airplay than those from The Bomb are currently receiving.

Everyone knows that people are tuning off the radio now. We have our iTunes pumping our own personal radio station with a playlist of thousands into our rooms, our iPods to take it on the road. The stations are, in part, recovering from that by aiming for the lowest common demoninator. The kind of music that casts the widest net. They're not going to alienate further listeners by playing msuic that isn't instantly catchy or memorable from the first listen. Pop music, whether it's rock or hip hop or whatever, rules the day on radio like never before. I would suggest, outside of some killer once in a lifetime classic tune, that the airplay for The Bomb singles is about as good as U2 can do in this environment.

Coming of the new urban music styles in the US. It was far easier for a rock band to be on the radio back then. Also ageism and the "hip" factor don't help.

Really? I'm not sure I ever heard any Zooropa songs on the radio here, and from Pop, Discotheque and maybe Staring at the sun a few times. I remember AB, ATYCLB getting more airplay, from Bomb Vertigo and Sometimes were popular, very little COBL and a few days ago ABOY for the first time.

Here in Portugal (and Spain too) the HTDAAB got (and still get) lots of radio airplay. I can say that last week SYCMIOYO, COBL and Vertigo were heard at least twice... And the new single and already been aired a few times...
