Bono, Sir Elton backing hospice campaign
Thursday, September 28 2006, 19:37 BST - by Dave West

Bono and Sir Elton John have put their weight behind a campaign to support hospices and palliative care.

The U2 frontman said he was backing World Hospice and Palliative Care Day because of his experience of his father's battle with cancer. Bob passed away in 2001, explained the singer, and was cared for tirelessly by hospice staff in his last days.

“In life, you try your best to hold on tight to your dignity, in death sometimes others have to hold onto it for you," he said. "The premise of hospice care is very close to the bone for me. The hospice was available to look after my father before he died of cancer.

"These people are kind of angels. They escort you to the door of your death; they are the midwives for delivery into your next life. The comfort and relief they provide is exponential, it spills over to family, friends, colleagues."

As a nurse, (hospice care is done almost exclusively by nurses) its music to my ears to read how much Bono appreciates the care of nurses, as he too mentioned his gratitude to Drs. and nurses a few times on the vertigo tour before singing "miracle drug". :cute:

"These people are kind of angels." That's just the sweetest thing to say.

I had made a banner that read "nurses love U2" and at the concert in Minneapolis I hung it over the bannister during the song "miracle drug" . I was pretty tickled when Bono noticed it and read it. He gave me the "fist up in the air" sign. boy was i thrilled.

Yeah, how wonderful. I know how wonderful nurses are, myy father in law died of a brain tumor, and I had an awsome nurse when I delivered my 2nd child, she really did all the work. My best friend is a nurse and my sister in law is a nurse too!

Nurses

And don't forget the doctors ....... just look at Miracle Drug

After all , Nurses , doctors , policemen ......... the real heroes

Yes! Nurses rock! I just had major surgery this summer and was in the hospital for a week. I had the good fortune of having a great nurse, she was very re-assuring and just wonderful. I was scared to death, since I have never been sick a day in my life! I hate hospitals too, I was terrified!:sigh:

My dad was a policeman and my bro in law a NYC fireman and a new cousin (married into the family) is a policeman too!!

That's wonderful that he supports hospice care. When my grandfather was dying we had hospice care, and the nurses and doctors from there were some of the most amazing people ever! They took such wonderful care of my grandfather and the rest of us as well. I have a special place in my heart for people who do this kind of work.

Nurses DO rock!!! I live next door to one, an Oncology nurse no less and she is such a kind caring gentle person. My grandmother was in hospice care for nearly a month near the end of her fight of bladder cancer and she left several of her caregivers special gifts when she died. They really are angels. A nurse who is also a U2 fan is an even more special individual!

yea, my mom's a nurse. 30 years and still going strong..
and yep, she has no idea about U2 too, except that her son is crazy about them..
am too letting her know about this!!
