I work at Sony. We need Blu-Ray to "win". Just so I can keep a roof over my head and food on the table. Especially after the disastrous UMD debacle.

Haha, I work for an HD-DVD supporting company.

I actually agree that neither are going to make massive inroads - if by that you are using the success and reach of standard DVD as a marker.

UMD's were a joke from the get go. Ridiculously overpriced, and the wrong range of products.

you know why Blu Ray will win? (and is something I've always said)

because people, normal people, can't say "HD-DVD"... it's too long..

BLUE RAY sounds nice, easy to say and to remember... its 2 words, not 5 letters...

"daddy, I want a blue ray for xmas"

"daddy, I want a HD-DVD (eich de de ve de  ) for xmas"

it's as simple as that..

Well, can't argue with that logic...

Betamax lost because it sucks at life. :p It was just a bad idea.

While we're on the subject, I'm also very curious as to why cassettes beat out 8-track and reel-to-reel...

that's the exact reason why

my tv prod teacher told me betamax was better than vhs, but the porn industry had a huge pull on it's downfall and vhs's success.

now most are saying that bluray is better than hd-dvd, quality-wise, but will the porn thing be as big of the deal now as it was then? i guess we'll see soon.

i really do think hd-dvd will pull out for maybe that reason, but because of its price and affiliation with the 360.

And now you are my sworn enemy...

But I think downloading and all that fun stuff will win in the end.

Yeah, it's the next major wave anyway and everyone knows that. Blu-Ray will have it's initial boost due to PS3, and both will successfuly coexist as a niche product, but the next major wave across all consumers will be downloading.

Porn won't make a difference in this case either. If you are looking to porn as the cutting edge leader, yes, it's why VHS won, and it's also why the net will win this one. Who the hell buys hardcopy porn now?

Blue Ray

Blue Ray is selling more than HD-DVD. There is a chance that both could exist, but with Blockbuster going with Blue Ray because they were rented 70-30 it looks like Blue Ray will win. Also Blue Ray has more memory than HD-DVD so when Blue Ray updates it's interactive features this Christmas there will be no quality advantage of HD-DVD. Also Blue Ray supports putting PCM master sound on their discs which is the best you can get in sound. Can you imagine U2 albums in original master quality. The only thing like that today is DVD-Audio which will be surpassed by HD discs. Pet Sounds, and REM albums sound incredible on DVD Audio on my computer. Until then I'll listen to my U2 mobile fidelity sound lab cd's. Even they beat the commercial cd's of today.

Blu Ray will win because the computing market has already adopted the Blu Ray standard for advanced optical drives. Computing and Home Entertainment/theatre cannot be separated in todays marketplace, they are very interdependent on each other and from what I see Blu Ray is already winning.
