Huzzah, Heartbreak Hotel has finally met its demise.

...now I have to figure out what the hell to vote for next.

Invisible and Crystal Ballroom deserve votes here pretty soon. Pretty average songs compared to many of these highlights.

Seriously. Party Girl is lucky it became such a live moment, because otherwise it would be derided as one of the band's dumbest ideas.

Already debated Invisible with Cobbler in the last thread, but my feelings about Crystal Ballroom are much stronger. I fucking love it. I think it is, with the exception of the never-officially-released Mercy, the best non-album track they've done since the MDH tracks. Huge sing-along chorus, that great middle-8 with the ascending oh-oh-oh-OH-oh-oo-oh-oo-oh-oo-oh, and that extended guitar solo that concludes the track. So good.

I've got to be honest, I find the lyrical concept of The Crystal Ballroom strange. Who the fuck writes that?

Invisible, for me, is a good enough song. It just doesn't ring true. There's no real connection between lyrics and music, the band sounds like it's on autopilot and the production feels shallow. Like a lot of post Pop U2.
It is catchy, but it's no classic in my opinion.

What do you mean? It's basically about him wishing his dead mother could see what became of him, his success, etc.

Huh? It's about his parents meeting and courting each other. He straight-up describes their first kiss as his conception.

It's one of the better 2000s/10s U2 songs, granted, but it's definitely a bit odd thematically.

It's both. From the horse's mouth:

“I need to tell you something really weird about this song,” Bono told the Irish Times. “It’s called The Crystal Ballroom, which used to be the name of McGonagles in South Anne Street [now knocked down]. A whole generation of Dubliners would go to the Crystal Ballroom for dances, and many couples first met there. My mother and father used to dance together in the Crystal Ballroom, so that song I just sang you, which hasn’t been released yet, is me imagining I’m on the stage of McGonagles with this new band I’m in called U2 – and we did play a lot of our important early gigs there. And I look out into the audience and I see my mother and father dancing romantically together to U2 on the stage.”

“I have just realised that my mother died 40 years ago yesterday, and here we are today playing our new album about Dublin, which is about my family and what happened to me as a teenager.

“My mother died when she was at her father’s funeral. She had a cerebral aneurysm. I was only 14. And in this song I am singing, “Everyone is here tonight, everyone but you.” And it’s me wanting to see my mother dance again in the Crystal Ballroom and for her to see what happened to her son.”

In the end I found myself tossing between Sweetest Thing and Two Shots. The single version of Sweetest Thing has too much of a generic pop sheen for my liking, and the original is a bit rough around the edges. Two Shots may have some good lyrics and be well composed but it's simply not my style at all. So Two Shots it is.

Going to be gutted if Alex Descends Into Hell is ousted. Wonderful track.

I was going to vote to save one of Party Girl/Alex Descends, but I like both and couldn't decide which was more deserving, so I just voted for Summer Rain again instead.

Looks like both are gone.

Just a reminder that no new poll will be started today, as it's New Year's Eve. We will pick up again tomorrow.

Just noting the trend. I like Alex.

There were only two instrumentals in the final pool to begin with - Bass Trap and Alex Descends - and they are two of the five tracks that have been eliminated thus far. I'm not sure if that constitutes a trend.

I re listened to all the tracks last night. I'm going with Hallelujah next time. Edge's guitar in middle of Walk to Water is awfully nice. A stay of execution for a couple rounds.

Yeah, to be honest I like Walk to the Water more these days than I used to. Not a classic but definitely better than some of what's left, with evocative guitar, some intriguing lyrics, and a decent vocal performance.
