REVISED SALES ESTIMATES ADDED!

In the U.S., ATYCLB fell from the Top 100 in its 41st week. Typically, I would have stopped monitoring the charts at this time. However, with a new single, various U2 promotions and return of the tour, I believed that ATYCLB would return to the Top 100. This prediction proved to be true. ATYCLB returned to the U.S. Top 100 in Week 45 and has not dropped out since.

I have not posted an update since Week 51, therefore, this Week 60 update will briefly discuss some highlights from the past weeks.

In Week 60, ATYCLB drops slightly from #69 to #71 in the U.S. However, it retains its Gold background, indicating at least a 10% jump in sales.

As I hoped, ATYCLB was able to "survive" in the Top 100 on the U.S. charts through this holiday season. By doing so, it was able to enjoy a second holiday season sales boost.

The first 60 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20-18-22-16
19-19-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66-53-50-57-55
54-58(3x)-62-67-80-77-78-76-69-71

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 16 weeks. It has spent 56 out of 60 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 60 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 32,000 + 50,000 + 80,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 60 weeks are: 3,261,000

Unfortunately, Melissa has not sent me any SoundScan data for the past 2 months.

Therefore, I made estimates on the weekly sales based on past trends, Gold status bars and accounting for holiday sales and the information provided in the posts below this one. If actual sales information for these past two weeks are obtained, I will certainly update my estimates.

"Stuck in a Moment..." debuted at #62 (higher than the debut for "Beautiful Day") on the Hot 100 chart. Sadly, it peaked at only #52. With such a strong debut, I had hoped the song would at least crack into the Top 40, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. However, the song did reach #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart, giving U2 their second biggest hit from ATYCLB on that chart. The #52 ranking still gave U2 their second biggest hit off of ATYCLB in the U.S.

Speaking of "Stuck..." it drops from #9 to #11 on the Adult Top 40 chart this week and from #78 to #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. Inexplicably, "My Sacrifice" by Creed rises from #9 to #6 on the Hot 100 chart. I have enjoyed some Creed songs in the past, but "My Sacrifice" has got to be one of the worst songs I've heard this past year. How this song became such a big hit is beyond me. I had hoped Creed would restore some class to the Top 10, but I guess now. Creed not only has the #1 album in the country with "Weathered," but "Human Clay" is #1 on the Pop Catalog chart as well. If you hate Creed, I guess this must be a difficult time for you.

Back to U2...

The big news is that ATYCLB was certified as 3x Platinum in Week 52 - one year after its release. This is a significant accomplishment, as it triples the certification of U2's last studio album, "Pop." U2's two best-selling albums, "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" both were certified as 4x Platinum after a year. While ATYCLB won't achieve the sales successes of those two albums (at least in the U.S.), it also won't be far behind. The 3x Platinum certification bodes well for catalog sales as well.

"Pop's" estimated actual sales (to consumers) are around 1.5 million in the U.S. ATYCLB has now crossed the 3.2 million mark in U.S. sales. It may have one more strong week (since Christmas fell on a Tuesday plus people are on vacation) before it falls to more normal numbers. Unless U2 release another single, the album will mostly likely fall from the Top 100 in the coming months. Again, if no other single is released, I estimate the album will sell approximately 3.5 million copies in the U.S. before it falls from the Top 200. However, another SUCCESSFUL single could give ATYCLB the boost that it needs to get 4x Platinum certification before falling from the Top 200. Also, American Music Award nominations and wins, Grammy nominations and wins and the Super Bowl performance could add substantially to sales. Regardless, ATYCLB has handsomely sold over 3 million copies in the U.S - quite an accomplishment for a band that "flopped" with their last album and one that has been around for over 20 years.

Doc- U2 is at number 71 this week. The top 53 albums sold at least 100,000 copies. That number is from rollingstone.com. Your estimate of 50,000 this past week is VERY low. I would say they sold about 80,000 copies. I think its very safe to say that the number 100 album sold 50,000. I dont think that the difference from #53 to #71 would be 50,000.

Here's a clue:

"For the week ending 12/23, LOTR sold 83,608 copies, putting it at #2 for soundtracks and jumping up to #64 from #97 on the album chart. So far about 185,000 copies have been sold, and I would expect to see it certified gold next week."

so that would put our boys around 80,000 mark

Thanks for the info! Glad to see our boys are still doing well after a full year of being on the charts!

In the UK this week ATYCLB falls slightly to 64. Not sure if the (late night) screening of Elevation Boston will help sales or not. The record company marketing people should get their act together and push the album in the UK - 4 top 5 singles in the UK, over 1 million sold in the UK etc. Of course a new single (IALW) would help.

The Boston Video/DVD rises 2 places to number 6 on this weeks chart, and Rattle & Hum re-enters (again) at 27.
