Always

does anyone else think this is a feckin' fantastic song?
the lyrics are tremendous, except for one small thing that has bugged me since the first time i heard it-in the closing verse bono sings 'go find yourself in someone else/and always wear a safety belt/wait for me i'm runnin' late/this is the moment that we shared'.
'always wear a safety belt'?
is that a joke? i thought that was the funniest and most out-of-place thing i had ever heard when i first this song.

This is one of my absolute favorite B-sides of all time.

And I still dont think it sounds like Beautiful Day.

I totally agree! I have to admit I like this one a little bit more than BD. Don´t know why...maybe I wanted something I can cry to...Damn, I wanted the U2 of old!

it shares a soul with beautiful day but nothing tangible. i love the mid part where bono repeats 'i want you'

and 'be uncool/yes be akward' might be the very definition of cool.

Always just might be my favourite B-Side ever. Great lyrics, great tune and it sounds nothing like BD.

Always is fucking awesome, I just love that song. Befoe I bought the album, I thought it was on it (new u2 fan) and think it deserved a spot! Why not put it after grace, end the album with a bang? This woulda done great as a single, even though the chorus has a slim resemblance to BD. Who cares!

To be the bee and the flower....

"Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, live like there is no tomorrow, dance like no one is watching." --Bono

"The only limits are the limits of our imagination. Dream up the kind of world you want to live in. Dream out loud. At high VOLUME".

me, too, baker, I thought both Always AND Summer Rain should have appeared on the album and a couple of the weaker songs could of been left off. Won't name them here, somebody might have a fit.

Their initials are W.H. and G. though.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE That song.

He says 'dream out loud' in like 3 millions songs. What's that about? No complaints, though

does anyone know the actual lyrics to always? The part where it gets really quiet - i can't understand him!!!!!

From the lyrics archive:

Here today
And gone tomorrow
Crack the bone, get to the marrow
To be the bee
And the flower
Before the sweetness turns to sour

What we have we're gonna keep...Always
What we've lost we don't need...Always
What is it that won't let you sleep...Always

Be the arrow ( I think its apple but that's just me )
And the target
Put your head over the parapet
Be uncool
Yes, be awkward
And don't look in the obvious place
The soul needs beauty for a soul mate(???) nobody knows.. lol.

Get down off your holy cloud...Always
God will not deal with the proud...Always
Well if you dream then dream out loud...Always
Eternally yours...Always

I want you
I want you
I want you

Touching the other side
I wanted to be in love(???)
I wanted to call(???)

You say come to know yourself...Always
Don't find yourself in someone else...Always
And always wear a safety belt...Always
Wait for me I'm running late...Always
This is the moment that we share...For always
Turn each song into a prayer...Always

Now and forever
For always
For always
For always
For always

Will we ever know for sure.

In the Beautiful Day EZE video, that one shot in Nice, we can see the words BEAUTIFUL DAY (ALWAYS) handwritten this way, in the same line with capital letters, right on the first seconds of the video. What is that supposed to mean? That Always is a previous version of BD? I read some commnents, I bet you read about it as well. I don´t know, but there are some resemblances, no doubt.
Anyway, Always is a great, great song, I love the lyrics, and everything on this song. I tend to listen to Always when I need some comfort...my fave verses

Be the arrow
And the target
Put your head over the parapet
Be uncool
Yes, be awkward
And don't look in the obvious place
The soul needs beauty for a soul mate

Always is obviously the early form of Beautiful Day.

I don't know how you can't notice it, it's sooo obvious. Anyways!

In Beautiful Day, Edge sings 'always' as backing vocals.

Great song though, but I prefer BD.

+ backing vocals, too
(listen to BD on ATYCLB when Edge goes "aaaah" he's actually going "always")

That said, just because it sounds a lot like Beautiful Day doesn't mean it isn't an awesome song!

I think Always is a nice song but the "And always wear a safety belt" part turns me off a bit.
I should mention my favorite line:
"Get down off your holy cloud
God will not deal with the proud..."

I exactly agree with you, it's an excellent song with great lyrics but that safety belt thing doesn't work for me. My favourite lines are "Be the arrow and the target, put your head over the parapet." Maybe because it makes me think of the U2 boys in some kind of medieval setting? I really like the Middle Ages. Those are great lines!
