anyone have any interesting alternate tracklists for this cd... specifically something with Gloria and Out Of Control...

i want to make a cd for my friend who doesn't know anything about u2 in the 80s

seriously, i don't know how she missed out on the 80s.

she has How to Dismantle and The Best of the 90s

she asked for a best of the 80s and i am having trouble making a flowing mix of their different styles during the period (i.e. Gloria AND angel of harlem are so very very different as if recorded by 2 different bands)

I think keeping the lovetown quartet together is essential to it having any kind of flow. I would have put it together a little like a JT-era setlist

Streets
I Will Follow
Still Haven't Found
Gloria
Out of Control
The Unforgetable Fire
Electric Co.
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Bad
October
New Years Day
Pride
With Or Without You
Angel of Harlem
When Love Comes to Town
Desire
All I Want is You

I think I came up with this one a while back:

Side A:
  • "Pride"
  • "New Year's Day" (edit)
  • "With or Without You"
  • "I Still Haven't Found..."
Side B:
  • "Gloria"
  • "Sunday, Bloody Sunday"
  • "Bad" (unedited)
  • "All I Want Is You" (unedited)
Side C:
  • "Where the Streets Have No Name" (unedited)
  • "I Will Follow"
  • "The Unforgettable Fire"
  • "Sweetest Thing" (1998 version)
Side D:
  • "Desire"
  • "Two Hearts Beat As One"
  • "Angel of Harlem"
  • "Out of Control" (original)
  • "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" (the slightly extended version)
  • "40"

I've making compilations of U2 best of's by decade for my friends and the tracklist I make for the 80's is...

1. Where the streets have no name (4.48)
2. I will follow (3.38)
3. Pride (3.48)
4. New Year's Day (4.17)
5. With or without you (4.57)
6. I still haven't found what I'm looking for (4.38)
7. Sunday bloody Sunday (4.40)
8. Bad (5.50)
9. The unforgettable fire (4.53)
10. In God's country (2.57) [this song still gets lots of radio airplay here]
11. Bullet the blue sky (4.32) [never failed a show since its appearence, so...]
12. Gloria (4.14)
13. Desire (2.59)
14. When love comes to town (4.14)
15. Angel of Harlem (3.49)
16. All I want is you (6.30)
17. '40' - live from Red Rocks (3.50)

It missed five on Lovetown, and one on Elevation.

The only pre-2000 U2 song that has been played at every single full tour concert since its debut is One.

I dont think all 4 R&H songs should have been included, while only 1 song from Boy/October (not counting the hidden track)

Here's mine:

01. Pride
02. New Year’s Day
03. With Or Without You
04. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
05. Sunday Bloody Sunday
06. Bad
07. Where The Streets Have No Name
08. I Will Follow
09. The Electric Co.
10. Bullet The Blue Sky
11. The Unforgettable Fire
12. Sweetest Thing
13. Desire
14. When Love Comes To Town
15. Gloria
16. Angel Of Harlem
17. All I Want Is You
18. 40

Total Time: 1:18:13

Added songs:
The Electric Co. - This song used to be an epic live with Bono going crazy climbing onnthings and stuff plus it used to have many improvisations after the solo, during the slow part.

Bullet The Blue Sky - Definitely a classic, even though the studio version doesn't sound much with what they play nowadays and it's not as good it's still a great version plus this songs has been played live ever since it was released. A live version of this song from the Lovetown Tour would be cool to have on the compilation.

Gloria - October needs to be represented properly on the Best Of and this song, to me, is the best from that album. It was played a lot live too and deserves it's place here.

40 - Well, definitely a classic and ended every show in the 80's since they started playing it live. I still don't understand why U2 didn't put it on the Best Of.

which elevation show axver? and do you know why?

I'm not axver, but still... It was the first elevation show post-September 11, and I think the band felt it would have been inappropriate.

Take out Party Girl and shove God, Pt. 2 in between a Sunday/Bullet sammich, then switch in something different for October (maybe One Tree Hill (live) version would be perfect) and that would be my advice on a best-of. Hope this helps.

I also think Streets could be a closer too if it didn't have the long intro, or maybe even with the intro, because that ends the CD on a godly high-note. Good luck!

I think I'll join the tradition of going overboard with unneeded extras.

BEST OF 80-90

1. Out of Control
2. Pride
3. With or Without You
4. Sunday Bloody Sunday
5. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
6. Desire
7. I Will Follow
8. All I Want is You

9. Where the Streets Have No Name
10. October
11. New Year's Day
12. Bullet the Blue Sky
13. Gloria
14. Bad
15. 11 O'Clock Tick Tock (Live at Red Rocks)
16. "40"

B-SIDES

1. The Three Sunrises
2. Treasure (Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop)
3. J. Swallow
4. Things to Make and Do
5. Love Comes Tumbling
6. Bass Trap
7. Endless Deep
8. Boy/Girl

9. Spanish Eyes
10. Boomerang I
11. The Sweetest Thing
12. Boomerang II
13. Luminous Times
14. A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel
15. Silver and Gold
16. Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl

:hmm: that works quite well for me I think. I'm not sure Desire really fits on disc one, and the B-sides disc is a bit uncertain in my opinion.

You make it
And if you take out October, it leaves only one song from that album (even though I feel A Sort of Homecoming & One Tree Hill are better songs). I also feel that a B-sides disc should come with a A-sides disc and not a "best of". Therefore the inclusion of their most important b-side, Party Girl.

2001-10-10 at Notre Dame. I really don't know why - tommycharles's reason seems plausible.
