Story by: Jennifer Miller

Under the auspices of producers Shawn Amos and Paul Heck, Grammy Award-winning and up-and-coming African artists have come together for a tribute album to U2. In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 (Shout! Factory) will be out April 1 and feature 12 covers of the Irish quartet's favorites and rarities from the likes of Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians and Soweto Gospel Choir.

The project was inspired by Amos' work in South Africa with the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation, in addition to being an avid fan of both U2's music and Bono's philanthropic efforts with the ONE campaign and(RED), which have addressed the financial crises across the continent.

Bono, Hirst Back AIDS Charity With $40 Million Sale
By Linda Sandler

Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- U2 singer Bono and Damien Hirst, the U.K.'s wealthiest artist, are backing a $40 million AIDS charity auction of art that previewed today at Sotheby's in London before heading for New York.

``The (RED) Auction,'' devised by Bono and Hirst to raise money for HIV/AIDS treatment in Africa, features as much as $13.6 million of art donated by Hirst including a $7 million pill cabinet. Hirst sent more than 100 handwritten letters to artists and gathered 70 works for the New York sale on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, said the artist's spokeswoman, Jude Tyrrell, in an interview.

``I remember when I couldn't give my art away, it wasn't long ago either,'' Hirst said in an e-mailed statement from Sotheby's.

Londoners won't get a chance to see the 10 works by Hirst, Keith Tyson, Michael Craig-Martin and other artists that were shown to the press this morning, before being packed for export. Collectors can see more of the art, including by Georg Baselitz, Cecily Brown, Anish Kapoor, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha and Marc Quinn, from Feb. 4 at Gagosian Gallery in New York's Chelsea district.

The auction proceeds will go to the United Nations Foundation's fund to support HIV/AIDS programs in Africa, Sotheby's said. (RED) has worked with companies including Motorola Inc. to devise products, whose profits go in part to AIDS programs.

Diamond Skull

Bono, the lead singer of the Irish rock band, is the co- founder of (RED). Hirst, known for his diamond skull and a pickled shark owned by hedge-fund manager Steven Cohen, donated seven works to the charity auction, Sotheby's said. He has a fortune valued at 130 million pounds ($267 million) by the London Sunday Times.

Hirst's pill cabinet, titled ``Where There's a Will There's a Way,'' is filled with red-painted antiretroviral drugs, and is similar to a cabinet with colored pills that sold for $19.2 million in June, said Sotheby's specialist Oliver Barker.

Hirst also contributed a 214-centimeter red heart with dead butterflies stuck in gloss paint, ``All You Need Is Love,'' which has a top estimate of $1.5 million, and a red circular work, ``Beautiful RED Spin Painting,'' valued at as much as $800,000.

Hirst, who worked on the auction for more than a year, is a friend of Bono, Tyrrell said.
