Sorry if a similar thread already exists, 'cause it seems hard to believe that nobody has mentioned this before.

I was just listening to the song "Substitute" by The Who and I noticed a striking similarity with All Because Of You. The melodies of the verses are remarkingly alike.
And compare "I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth" to "I was born a child of grace".

Has U2 been "inspired" by this song?

i dont know the song but what do the "I was born" lines have in common with each other? That they have "I was born" in them? Not really a huge coincidence in my opinion.

"Love song to The Who" - Brooklyn Bridge intro to All Because of You

Yes they were inspired by it and have acknowledged it

i think even in the prealbum interviews bono said it sounded like the who
Well, it sounds like The Who through a Lilly Filter and a smooth sheen of production anyway.

It's gotta be totally intentional. Bono will even stutter sometimes in the song, a la The Who's "My Ge-Ge-Generation"

inspired by the who, yes. sound like substitute? no
You need to go see an ear doctor. :eyebrow:

Listen to the melody of
But I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah

If you still can't hear the resemblance to ABOY, you're either
- deaf
or
- not musical at all

I've always thought that All Because of You kind of sounds like The Who's "Bargain".

thanks.

if an uptempo song that contains "i was born" is all you need to say something sounds alike, then yes... they're practicly identical.

this i can see more than substitute...

substitute uses an acoustic guitar for pete's sake.

the guitar riff in bargain even sounds like the one in all because of you... add in the tambourine and you're on to something here.

My god, you're a specialist in twisting words, aren't you?

I didn't say "is exactly the same song", I said "inspired". Have you ever heard Alien Groove Sensation by Naked Funk? According to U2, it was their inspiration for DYFL. The songs aren't very much alike, but there's one riff almost exactly the same.

Substitute is not the same as ABOY. But the melody I described above is almost certainly copied.

And now go read a dictionary and learn what "inspired by" means.

i have a few ideas at what you could do with a dictionary, none of which involve reading.

i listened to it, i don't think it's even a distant cousin.

bargain? now THAT riff i think sounds a lot like all because of you.

here's a wacky idea... considering that they said that it was inspired by the who, the entire feel of the song has a "who like" sound, thus it could sound like a bunch of different who songs to a bunch of different people.

Now here you are contradicting your previous statements.

First you make an idiot out of me for having the idea that the songs are alike.
Now you say everyone has the right to think ABOY sounds like whatever Who song.

I will stop arguing with you now, 'cause continuing it will undoubtedly lead to a nice :lock: on this thread.

I don't have the time to write down the notes of this part in the songs, and I don't care ('cause from experience I know you Interference members always find a way to deny something, even if the evidence is right under your nose). However, I'm certain that if you would compare the two scores, they would match for at least 80%.
